Bryan-Carey says "American Diabetes Association: Advocate for the Diabetic " about American Diabetes Association

Do you know someone with diabetes? Chances are you do. More than 25 million people in the United States alone suffer from this annoying and sometimes fatal disease and the numbers continue to grow each year, due in part to the obesity epidemic and poor eating habits among Americans of all ages. The foremost charity that works on behalf of diabetics everywhere is the American Diabetes Association, a non- profit health organization.

Charity Commentary:

The American Diabetes Association mission is threefold. First, this organization wants to assist those who presently have diabetes and help them live a normal life. Second, the American Diabetes Association wants to educate the public and help prevent future cases of diabetes. Third, this health organization wants to search for a cure. Its annual spending budget is divided among these three key areas of support.

I have been an active contributor to the American Diabetes Association for many years and what first drew my attention...
...

Bryan-Carey says "Habitat for Humanity: Helping Others to Help Themselves " about Habitat for Humanity

December is the season of giving and besides offering presents to friends and family, it is also a time to consider giving to your favorite charities. I have a long list of organizations to which I make financial contributions each year and one of them is Habitat for Humanity, an organization dedicated to serving the housing needs of lower- income families.

Charity Commentary:

Habitat for Humanity is a non- profit charitable organization with its operations headquartered in Americus, Georgia with regional offices around the country and the world. Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller and its mission is simple. This organization feels that every human should have a safe and affordable place to live and it offers its services to anyone who can demonstrate need, regardless of their race, religion, ethnicity, etc. Today, Habitat for Humanity can claim to have built more than 350,000 homes for needy families, across the United States and around the world.

The Posse Foundation identifies public high school students with extraordinary academic and leadership potential who may be overlooked by traditional college selection processes. Posse's partner colleges and universities award Posse Scholars four-year, full-tuition leadership scholarships. These Scholars graduate at a rate of 90 percent and make a visible difference on campus and throughout their professional careers.

About a year ago I got involved with a not for profit organization called The Posse Foundation that is headquartered in New York but also has a Chicago Chapter. The Posse Foundation was inspired by the simple insight that scholarship students from inner city schools often have a hard time college because they do not have the same support system that other kids do. Posse seeks to address this issue through a unique process that identifies through nomination 2,000+ kids throughout a city (in this case Chicago) and then puts them through a variety of very interesting and...
...

I have to give a shout out to the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life of Carrollton, TX. Relay for Life is an event sponsored by the American Cancer Society to raise money for research, and the support of cancer patients. Cancer is a devastating disease that has touched every single person in one way or another.

Relay for Life is an extremely important event where you walk overnight for the fight against caner. I particularly like Relay for Life because it raises money for all types of Cancer, it doesn't focus on one specific area. I have participated for as long as I remember and it has been worth every minute of it. I lost my mother to colon cancer, she was very young and it could have been prevented if it were caught sooner. Cancer can be defeated, especially if it is caught in the early stages but the awareness is not out there enough which is why events like Relay for Life are so important.

This year I decided to be team captain of one of the teams for the Carrollton,...
...

The PEACE Fund (Protect Educate Aid Children Everywhere) was founded by actor Adrian Paul (mostly known for "Highlander: the series"). This charity raises funds to help smaller underfunded charities around the world that help children.

Some recent receipients are: COTA, Teachers Across Borders, Krabi Relief Fund, Romanian Relief Fund, School Makes a Difference (SMAD), Tameer-E-Millat.

I have to admit I stumbled across this charity while being on Adrian Paul's website. I like to blog about charities, fundraisers, etc. I was also wondering one day what else Mr. Paul has done and that is how I discovered his website. I did some research and found that he and others have done some wonderful things trying to help children around the world.

I have since developed an online friendship with someone who knows him personally and feel even better about spreading the word. I am financially unable to help due to bills and now being forced to look for a new job as of this writing, but...
...

Our son was in the NICU at TC Thompson Children's Hospital in Chattanooga when he was born last year. We live 2 hours away from Chattanooga so it was hard for us to drive there everyday. The hospital got us into the RMH very quickly. We lived the farthest away out of everyone staying there. The people at RMH are so wonderful and they actually care about you and your family. You get a private room and kitchen priveleges. They have washers/dryers. A lactation room which was important since I was pumping. Not to mention there is always food for your family there. Anything you need they have it. They have volunteers come and cook dinner everyday. It looks like a really expensive hotel. They charge $10 a night but if you don't have money you can do a chore instead. The RMH gave us the chance to spend tons of time with our son while he was sick. We wouldn't have been able to be with him as much if it weren't for them. It's always hard having a sick child in the hospital but just knowing you don't......

I was leafing through a copy of Women's Day magazine when a very special article caught my attention. The Women's Day/Armed Services YMCA Holiday Drive is an annual event that uses 100% of donations to provide holiday food baskets and gifts to military families.
With my husband being a Navy veteran, I'm always interested in contributing to causes that support active service members and their families who sacrifice so much. The holidays are centered on family and friends, so an otherwise joyous holiday season must be terribly difficult for families who experience the absence of a loved one serving in the military. Without hesitation, I knew that the Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA) was a cause I wanted to support.

ASYMCA has provided support services for more than 140 years, primarily to junior--enlisted service members--the individuals on the front lines. They offer programs ranging from childcare, hospital assistance, spouse support services, food services, holiday meals, and more....
...

The March of Dimes Missions Statement:

Our mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. We carry out this mission through research, community services, education and advocacy to save babies' lives. March of Dimes researchers, volunteers, educators, outreach workers and advocates work together to give all babies a fighting chance against the threats to their health: prematurity, birth defects, low birthweight.

Each year, more than 460,000 babies are born too soon, some so small they can fit in the palm of a hand. Many of these babies must fight just to survive; others will struggle with lifelong health problems. No one knows what causes half of all premature births. No one is working harder than the March of Dimes to find out.

Every baby has a story.

I wish we had never needed the March Of Dimes, but when our daughter was born almost 9 weeks early, weighing in at 2 lbs, we were thankful for them. The classes are designed to teach bicycle mechanics, maintenance, and safety. In addition to these hands-on skills, youth also learn responsibility and positive conflict resolution. Youth who successfully complete the program earn a bike and helmet. These youth are more confident, possess a greater sense of respect and respectability, and have a stronger desire to serve and improve their community.
While I run the race as a step-parent, I worry about the needs of children who are placed in foster care...kids that desire more than anything to have parents of their own. And I applaud the work done by Foster and Adoptive Care Coalition as they try to help these children find their forever home and have the umbrella of protection they deserve.

There are many ways you can help them do their job...go to their website to find out more about the many opportunities available. And if you don't see something that you are capable of doing but have other ways to help, contact them to see if your idea is an idea they can use.

During the Christmas season, you can make a huge difference and sign up to provide a Christmas gift for a child in foster care. Many times, it will be the only gift they receive. My husband and I have been doing this for the last two years and it has given our Christmas celebration new meaning.

Once these kids "age out:" of the foster care program, many of them have no family......

The national ms society provides many educational materials. It provides a magazine at no charge with alot of updates and inspirational stories. It also has a online library where materials can be obtained. It will furnish speakers for ms seminars and also has sent a speaker for our ms support group. It will address just about any issue associated with the disease. One of the worst problems with ms is dealing with heat. It furnishes at no cost a cooling vest which has been a great help to many people. More & more people are being diagnosed with ms every year and the national ms society is a great charity to help. thanks...

RobinW says "Hammer Theology--Putting Love into Action!" about Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity is a hand-up--not a hand-out. Applicants for Habitat homes are actually selected based on several criteria. Once these applicants are approved and become future homeowners, they work out some of the cost of their home with "sweat equity"--they help to build their own home and the homes of other future Habitat homeowners, along with volunteers and covenant sponsor groups. It provides the oneness of a true neighborhood - and love is in action from the foundation up!

Volunteers will have the best of time working muscles they thought they never had and sweating pools of water that comes from deep inside, leaving a feeling of goodness that they have really done something worthwhile. Volunteers on all levels of the organization help to reduce the cost of homes, along with providing services that otherwise would cost Habitat and ultimately add to the final cost of a home.

I recommend Habitat as a great place to donate your resources: money, stocks, time, skills,...
...

Habitat for Humanity and other like services are one of the greatest ideas and projects that have come along in this century. It gives people who would otherwise never be able to afford a home of their own a chance to be a part of society and a meaningful member of that society. Gives them pride of ownership and raises their knowledge of themselves as a person. The homes are built with their total input which also raises their estimation of true worth in themselves ~ that they have contributed to their own selves and what they can accomplish. In some areas, they have not only to build their own home, but help with the construction of the homes in their area before they can move into their own. Think it is a great, marvelous way in which to build more families into meaningful members of our society....
