Anamouse says "Not as good as the price suggests they should be" about Cutco Knives

Cutco knives are more hype and less value than any other knife line I know of. They cost as much as professional quality cutlery and are not professional quality knives.

I collect cutlery and own pieces of most vintage and modern manufactures inlcuding Cutco's large chef's knife, 1725 and their slicer , 1724. Neither do anything that much less expensive knives don't do just as well or better.

They are well suited for the average wife, and may even impress her if she's never owned or used professional quality knives, but anyone who has and regularly sharpens their own knives, will quickly come to the conclusion that they are nothing special.

Most people's kitchen knives are hardly sharp, they usually don't sharpen them at all, and if they do they probably use something other than decent sharpening stones so the result isn't very good. Those people will be impressed by any new sharp knife, and Cutco knives come with a reasonable factory edge and can washed in the dishwasher, which...
...

daniellels says "Cutting is a pleasure with sharp knives" about Ginsu International Traditions 6-Piece Bakelite Steak Set

Suddenly, I feel like cooking again. Chopping onions, dicing carrots, making perfect juliennes with red peppers and mincing the garlic fine for my famous (!) vegetable medley is...effortless. All because of these knives. Ooh they are sharp! So be careful or you may end cutting yourself!

I love the fact that the knives are sharp right out the box. Many people swear by their forged knife blades but that makes the knives heavier. I have another set from Pinzon (Amazon's brand) and yet another from Cuisinart that I barely use as they are heavier and not as sharp as these knives. I think stamped blades are great as they are lighter and thinner like these Ginsu knives. If you cut vegetables more than meat then you need knives like these. For meat you need heavier blades with more balance and "brute force". For slicing a tomato so fine that you can see through it you need a Ginsu. With a Ginsu in your hand you'll end up sculpting roses from your radishes!

Update 11/5/08: I have been using these...
...

Jo says "Rachael Ray's Paring Knife is worth $5.00" about RACHEL RAY 4" Basics Paring Knife

To the Point

Knowing our kids are coming for Thanksgiving I had to buy a good knife so they could cut vegetables. They eat them raw and complain about our lack of knifes. I never knew knives were so expensive. I ended up buying Rachael Ray's 4" Basics Paring Knife for $4.00. Just this morning my husband commented on how good it is.

A Closer View

There were two reasons I bought Rachael Ray's 4" Basics Paring Knife.

The price was better than any other.

I liked that it has a cover.

The one downside is that the knife is orange and it reminds me of the orange knife with which I used to carve our Halloween pumpkins.

This is considered a basic paring knife, which means it is an all purpose knife. It's great to cut raw brussel sprouts, for example.

Rachael Ray's 4" (blade) Basics Paring Knife has a wedge-shaped handle which makes it easy to hold. It also has antimicrobial protection and a rubberized grip that makes using the knife comfortable for my hands. As I said I love that it has a blade...
...

dmlichnerowicz says "Well, they're knives, but there's nothing miraculous about that!" about Miracle Blade III Perfection Series

I'll admit it...I got suckered in by the TV ad promising to cut down on your prep time and being able to cut through a frozen carcass. I should have known better. I purchased a set of Miracle Blade III Perfection Series knives and the accompanying knife block several years ago. So far, they still cut the things I need but there have been a few major disappointments.

First of all, the blades are rusting. They are made of stainless steel, but every single knife has patches of rust on the blade. I cannot scrub it off, no matter what I use. Secondly, the knives never really did what they promised. I spend just as much time preparing my foods as I did before. I don't think it takes a genius to figure out how to use each knife, so it's not operator error. I was also disappointed with the kitchen shears that came along as the "free gift." Within weeks, the plastic handle had cracked and I was no longer able to bear down on the scissors to cut through so much as a plastic bag! ...
...

MRSverret says "Good set, Great price" about Farberware 21 Piece Cutlery Set

My husband's grandmother purchased us this set of knives for Christmas last year. The pieces included is almost anything you will need in your kitchen. The set looks nice and performs well.

The Farberware 21 Piece Cutlery Set comes with:

8" chef knife
8" slicing knife
8" bread knife
7" Santoku
4-1/2" utility knife
3-1/2' paring knife
Fork
6" boning knife
Universal shears
Poultry shears
cleaver
Eight 4-1/2" steak knives
Sharpening steel
wood block

This set has lasted my husband and I a while and I use these knives at least once a day. Most of the things included are things you will need on a daily basis. And the wood block that it comes with isn't too big, so it doesn't take up a lot of space on my counter.

The knives seem to work good. I usually sharpen the knives with our sharpener. Plus, we use a bamboo cutting board which helps keeps the knives from becoming dull. The handles of the knives are quite comfortable in you hand and don't hurt. Overall, I'm satisfied with this set, it...
...

Cutco Cutlery is the best investment you could ever make. These knives are made with the finest materials you can get for kitchen cutlery. They have full tang thermo resin handles, with nickel silver rivets, Carbon Steel blades, and have the AMAZING Double-D edge that can stay sharp for up to 7-10 years. They stand behind their product with an amazing gaurantee that gaurantees them for LIFE. My mom has had these knives for over 40 years and always says she has never regretted her purchase. They make the best gifts for weddings, birthdays, anniversaries... anything. Even if the person who's recieving the gift hasn't heard of Cutco they will want to know more about it after they use it. The price is definitely more expensive than your regular knives from a department store, however Cutco wouldn't make a cheap product and then gaurantee it for life. In this case the value definitely always exceeds the price.
...

Cutco Chief knifes come with a lifetime guarantee, if it ever breaks, Cutco will replace it! I have had a Cutco Chief knife for 18 years and it is still as sharp and shiny as it was the day I received it. I know if I break it, Cutco will replace it. Cutco stands behind what they say too. The materials Cutco Chief knives are made of don't rust or corrode. A simple washing, and drying and it looks like brand new again. It keeps the sharp edge. It is a pretty expensive knife, but it is the only chief knife you will ever need to buy in your lifetime, so that makes it pretty reasonable! That is because as long as you have the knife if anything goes wrong with it, Cutco will replace it! What other knife company can or would do that?

Cutco chief knives make a wonderful gift to anyone who appreciates fine cutlery. I would recommend the Cutco Chief knife to anyone who wants a sharp and beautiful knife!
...

Pampered Chef Knives are the best. They stay sharp! A sharp knife is really safer than a dull knife because you don't have to struggle with it. A sharp knife does the work for you. Did you know that putting your knives in the dishwasher dulls the blade? Take a few extra minutes and wash your knives by hand to help keep them sharp. Chop like a chef with these knives and make cooking easier. You know how hard it is to slice celery or green onions with a dull knife. With these knives it feels like slicing through butter. My husband loves these knives. He will help in the kitchen more often just to use these knives. Chop like a Chef by keeping the point of the knife on the cutting board and just guide the handle up and down to cut while you feed the food into the blade area. (Please make sure that you keep your fingers tucked under or use a finger guard) Cutting this way gives you more control over the knife and the knife is not moving all over the place. Watch...
...

RudiXeno says "Tramontina: Of Course!" about Tramontina Santoku Knife

If you read me regularly, you know that I have a fondness for Tramontina Cookware. And, if you're into cookware, chances are you're also into quality knives.

My introduction to Santokuknives was with my purchase of a knife set by Sabatier Loire. This $100 set of full tang knives included one 8" Santoku Blade. Although it took me some time to adapt to the Santoku from the more familiar 8" Chef's knife, it soon became of a favorite of mine.

My problem with this particular knife by Sabatier was that although I liked its feel and function, it was a cheaply made Chinese import of relatively low quality steel. It was forever in the need of resharpening.

I was convinced that I was going to have to spend major bucks for a high quality European blade in order to replace it.

But, a luck would have it, several months ago during a trip to Sam's Club I spotted a pair of Tramontina Santokuknives for something less than $20! Ordinarily, I probably wouldn't have given them a second look. ...
...

j9j says "Reasonably good starter set" about Tools of the Trade Triple Riveted knives

I bought the Tools of the Trade 22 piece Triple Riveted knives set two years ago. It has been an excellent starter set. It has a nice selection of knives so you can normally find the perfect knife for any job. In particular the smaller knives and the santoku knife are useful. The 9.5 inch chef's knife is a bit too thick. It makes it extremely hard to cut into anything, even when the knife is very sharp. The kitchen shears are decent, but the locking scissors broke after only a few uses.

I cook a lot, and these knives do have the tendency to dull rather quickly. After two years, it is getting hard to keep my favorites (3.5" paring and 7.75" utility) sharp.

These knives are certainly not on the same level as the top brands (j a henckels, wusthof, etc.), but they are far less expensive. All in all they are a good set of knives for someone just starting out or for someone who doesn't cook all the time.
...

Knowing that I love to cook, my mom bought me a Kuhn Rikon Nonstick Paring Knife for Christmas last year. I thought it odd that the knife came in an almost florescent red/orange color, but once I used it, I didn't care what color it was - this is the best knife I had ever used!

Kuhn Rikon is a Swiss brand of kitchen knives and gadgets and they are known for their high quality. Their knives have either wooden, forged handles, or plastic handles - and even nonstick knives. They also make cookware, pressure cookers and fancy kitchen gadgets too.

The Kuhn Rikon Nonstick Paring Knife is very, very sharp. I have cut myself, I can't even remember how many times with this knife. It has a plastic handle which I like, because I put it in the dishwasher.

I actually use this knife for more than what you would traditionally use a paring knife for. The name "nonstick" is true. Anything you cut with this knife doesn't cling to the blade, it effortlessly falls off and makes slicing...
...

my oldest brother sold cutco when i was 5 and what i remember most about this time was watching 2 of my other brothers (i have 6 of them) sit and cut pennies with the cutco scissors my mother bought. that was 40 years ago (i dont know how since im only 22 lol) and the pair of scissors used to cut that money is the pair my mom uses today. since the scissors come apart they are perfect for curling ribbon on gifts and since my mom has 9 kids and a gazillion grandkids and friends those scissors have curled miles and miles of ribbons..and they still cut coins with no problem. i grew up using all the cutco knives and cooking utensils my mom had purchased and 12 years ago my friend at work said she wanted to show me a new product she was selling and showed up at my house with cutco. i laughed and bought myself a set and i also purchased the scissors i love so much and they are sitting right here as i type this. while my knives are the sharpest tools in my house my husband on the other hand...
...

Katieluvsfl says "Good knives for small jobs" about FURI RACHEL RAY 3-Piece Gusto-Grip Knife Set

The 3-Piece Furi Gusto-Grip knife set for Rachael Ray is a good set, with the chef's knife being great for small hands and for small jobs. All three knives are weighted so they always feels "right" in your hand, although I should have read the description closer and I would have seen that the largest knife is 10-inches (6-inch blade). I prefer a larger knife but this is still good for smaller jobs and young cooks -- my kids love the knives -- the bright orange color of the handles, the size and the carrying case!

The paring knife is small, sharp and accurate with a pin-point tip. This knife is great for hulling berries and a must-have for making decoration with fruit and/or vegetables.

The serated knife is AMAZING. I usually don't use them very often except for cutting bread, but the sharpness and blade-length of this one (7 inches), along with, again, a pin-point tip makes it a great blade for many jobs.

All three knives are sharp and they sharpen nice and evenly. The nicest thing...
...

I am 45, an avid home canner and cook. I like nice cookware, Italian made stainless and copper, old time cast iron and enamel ware. I can everything from meats to soups to vegetables and fish,, if its been canned in the last 100 years, I try it. So,, with that being said, I am into the best of the best!

I first saw Cutco at the county fair this last summer. I thought it was just a gimmick and I didn't buy it. I came home and started getting online to research it. I went to the website. I went to review sites. I ran back to the fairgrounds and picked up the cheese knife, the santuko or however you spell that, a paring knife and a steak knife. Amazing stuff!

I've bought knives in knife stores, butcher shops, at Macy's,, all the very best knives that are available. Nothing stayed sharp. My old hickory is easy to sharpen, but everything else gets dull fast. If I were a professional chef and was able to sharpen my knives everyday, perhaps I would...
...

RudiXeno says "Amco Mezzaluna Chopper: Now that's what I'm talking about! " about Amco Mezzaluna Chopper

Well, you know by now my disappointment with the Farberware Classic Series Mezzaluna Chopper. Yeah, bummer.

Ordinarily, I might let this lay for awhile. But the idea of getting my round wooden bowls back into full use again stuck in my mind. I was now on a mission. A mission to find the chopper that would enable me to do that.

It didn't take long for me to come across just what I thought I needed on Amazon.com. There it was. The Amco Mezzaluna Chopper. Measuring 6 1/2" x 4 1/2", its curve was more pronounced than that of the Farberware, but on reflection I realized that this in fact might make it more effective inside the bowl. From the photo it appeared to be a compact, substantial chopper. Its non-slip handle was higher above the blade than was the Farberware and it had just one single blade. In my head, I could see the advantages of this design. There would be no clogging of the blade, and the added height might allow me to substitute this chopper for my chef's...
...

RudiXeno says "Farberware Mezzaluna Chopper: Both more & less than I hoped for" about Farberware Classic Series Mezzaluna Chopper

A while back I was roaming my local Publix Supermarket and I spotted the Farberware Classic Series Mezzaluna Chopper. Cool beans, I thought, I'd been looking for one of these. Into my basket it went.

A Little Background

I own a couple of vintage wooden chopping bowl that have been handed down in my family. The larger of the two is probably going on 90 years-old and shows no signs of quitting on me. When I use it I can still envision my grandmother's kitchen with her and her mezzaluna chopper. Of course in those days I just called it a round bowl chopper.

Well, I inherited her chopper as well, but it beats me where it disappeared to. Probably the same place as all those screwdrivers that vanish and one out of every two of my socks. I bet you're familiar with that place, aren't you?

Farberware Classic Series Mezzaluna Chopper

This chopper appeared to everything I wanted. Additionally it is a beautiful looking tool with its dual blades gracefully curved. Placed into...
...
