JAFPCU says "Inexpensive doesn't always mean low quality." about R.H. Forschner 10-Inch Chef's Knife, Model 40521

Always use the right tool for the job. That applies equally, whether you are slicing carrots and onions, or building a house. This knife is "the right tool" in your kitchen.

Less in common with most quality tools is the hard to believe price -- typically under $30!

I originally looked at this particular R.H. Forschner* knife after a review on America's Test Kitchen. I have since bought several more: 8" Chef's, 7" Santoku, and a 3" Paring.

The blade is exceptionally sharp right out of the package, but should be steeled** regularly (as with any good blade).

The Fibrox™ handle is easy to grip, even with wet, slippery hands.

* R.H. Forschner knives are made by Victorinox, the Swiss Army Knife manufacturer.
** Use of a "sharpening steel" to maintain a true edge....

My mother owned and used Cutco knives when I was a child, and now I own a larger set than she does! I was actually a sales representative for the brand for a few years, so I know a lot about how the knives are made and used, and I have never seen another brand that meets the same high standards as Cutco. Good cutlery is an investment. Don't be afraid to spend a lot of money on it because it will last you a lifetime.
...

Cutco knives are the best brand of cutlery out there. They are not sold in stores or they would be incredibly expensive. They are a little pricey as it is, but they are worth it. For anyone looking to make an investment in one set of knives that will last them a lifetime and more, these are the knives for you. The reason you only need to buy one set is because the set comes with a forever guarantee, making it convenient to get knives sharpened, fixed or replaced in the event of any type of use, either for free or for a fraction of the original cost. They only need to be sharpened every 1-7 years, depending on the edge. They are incredible....

I'm a serious cook. And, like all serious cooks I believe in at least two things: Serious cookware and serious knives.

To me serious knives have always been either German or French, high carbon forged steel, full tang construction, hefty weight and even heftier price tags. But.

About a year ago I was taking a tour of the kitchen of one of South Florida's most prestigious hotels. My host really wanted to impress me so he kept steering me to the to the chef's stations that he thought had the most pizazz.

But I became obsessed with watching their butcher who was dressing full tenderloins of beef. He worked so smoothly and seemingly so effortlessly it was hypnotic.

After a while he put his knife down. I noticed immediately that it wasn't a forged knife at all, but a stamped stainless steel knife with the worn logo Superblade on its side. When I questioned him about it he simply stated "sharpest knife in the world".

We meet again

About a month ago, on one of my forays to Tuesday Morning...
...

GeorgeChabot says "The Japanese make a French Chef knife - Global Chef's Knife" about Global Chefs knifes

                          Global 8 1/4-Inch Heavyweight Chef's Knife

Global is a high quality line of kitchen cutlery knives made in Japan by Yoshida Metal Industry Co., familiarly called Yoshikin.

The Global knives were developed by Yoshikin as an adjunct to their tableware business. Their concept was to combine German handmade durability with Italian design aesthetics and Japanese precision. To judge by their products' acceptance by highly regarded chefs, the company more than achieved their goals and Global has since become a player in the quality knife market.

Global knives have been imported into the United States since the 1980s and many people are now familiar with the shiny, all stainless steel knives with the futuristic lines and ergonomic stainless steel handles.

Global's flatware experience gave them a head start in building the first knives made to appear fashioned out of a single piece of stainless steel. They are actually pieced together out of several pieces, but the......

First, I want to tell you how I got introduced to the Cutco knives. A friend of mine, who was working for Vector marketing gave her superiors my name as someone who might be interested in working for Vector Marketing. The thing about the suggestion is that if I joined, she got a "bonus" so it proves that everything happens for a reason. Now while I will be reviewing the company for the majority of this review, I will show you how the demonstrations hook you into buying the knives and i will show you what I've found with response to the knives. So I go into the interview thinking "wow, $13 an hour is GREAT" as they told me that's what I would start out making. This company preys on college-age students with the claims to "$13 an hour" or "work whenever you want to, You create your own schedule." In reality, Vector only paid you $13 an hour if you were unsuccessful in your demonstration to get someone to buy the set of knives. And that DOES NOT include the time, gas, or money......

I just recently purchased a set of Cutco knives and I really love them. I don't know that much about knives but I do enjoy cooking and these knives have worked wonderfully with everything I have used them on. I especially love the 'trimmer' its small size and serrated edge making slicing tricky items (like tomatoes) easy and quick. I also purchased the cheese knife which is, by far, the best one I have ever tried. All the knives are very sharp, comfortable to hold and seem to be very good quality.

My favorite part of the Cutco knives is the 'forever guarantee' that they come with. This is an amazing thing for a company to offer. Althought they knives are pricy, knowing that you will NEVER have to purchase another one (as it will be replaced or sharpened by the company).
...

These knives have never really left me feeling good about the purchase. Yes they're nice and sharp when you first buy them, however, they dull quickly, the blades are easy to get nicks in if they are dropped. The labels fall off of the blade handles all of the time. The block is expensive and is sold separately. The kitchen scissors are terribly constructed. In 4 years I've had to have mine replaced 3 times and they're broken again. The cheap plastic housing on the scissor blades keeps breaking and then the blades come loose. I definitely would NOT every buy a set of these for anyone else or recommend them. It's worth paying the extra $$$ to buy a nice good professional set....

Henckels company is located in Solingen, Germany one of the knife making capitals of the world. Since 1731, J.A.

Thousands of people end up in emergency rooms every year from cuts caused by slicing bagels. Medical staff have even begun to refer to the ligament and tendon damage suffered in these incidents as "bagel hand."

These patients should be handed something in addition to their discharge instructions on their way out of the ER: a Bagel Biter. From Larien Products, the Bagel Biter looks like a little guillotine. It consists of two pieces: the top which is a handle attached to two clear safety shields surrounding the piercing blade and the base which is a triangular shelf which centers both large and small bagels.

All you have to do is place the bagel in the base, slide the top over the base, and then lift the top off to retrieve your sliced bagel.

I usually avoid cluttering up my kitchen counters with fancy gadgets whose jobs can be done with simpler items (such as a knife in this case). But being a veteran of emergency room visits myself, I've made the space for the Bagel Biter on my counter.
...

I wanted this particular cutting board only because it looked cool. Seriously. It is made out of bamboo wood which is a very nice look. In addition, it comes with two stainless-steel bowls. These are great and really come in handy. I love that when I am chopping veggies, I can just slide the good stuff into a bowl on one side and the bad stuff into a bowl on the other side. This saves a lot of time because I don't have to pause to pick up the board or to transfer whatever I'm chopping by hand.

The only drawback that I have found is that this cutting board is fairly heavy. It is about 2" thick, so it is solid enough that you don't have to worry about pushing it around the counter what cutting on it. It is about 18" long and 13" wide. The board cleans well with soap and water without loosing much of its pretty shine. The two stainless-steel bowls are dishwasher safe and tuck up under the board when you need to store it.

The board and bowls are available only from Williams-Sonoma....
...
