TunefulGal says "Get a grip on Ikea's great Pokal glasses. Unbelieveable prices!" about Ikea Pokal Drinking Glasses

WHY I'M OBSESSED WITH DURABLE GLASSWARE

My hands have always been "sacred". The daughter of musicians, I grew up playing the piano, frequently warned to "be careful of your hands". As a softball outfielder, I always prayed no one could hit the ball into right field. In basketball, I approached everything knuckles first. (No wonder the captains always chose me last for their teams!)

Now, my hand obsession pretty much confines itself to anything that breaks in the dishpan. Delicate wineglasses and champagne flutes seem perilous. And, breakage aside, I've experienced my last boredom with plastic glasses. So... my latest discovery... ummm... plays right into my hands!

SKIP TO HERE IF YOU JUST WANT THE BARE FACTS

The Ikea's Pokal Drinking Glasses work for hot drinks as well as cold, seem ultra durable (though not with the stated assurances of www.viewpoints.com/Duralex-Classic-French-quot-Picardie-quot-Glasses-review-2fa6), and feel good in the hand.

This all started last year when Linens 'N Things announced that they would be going out of business during the first part of 2009. Their store here in Oak Park was quickly picked to the bare bones but clearance fever (with all sales final) ratcheted on up at the LNT website as I grabbed new towels, a roasting pan which proved to be a lemon, and lastly, a set of 24 Libbey Glass Charisma Hoops Tumblers for $7.95. The glassware was the last thing I ordered on clearance from LNT and when they arrived, I signed for them, took them in, shoved the box to one side in my hallway, and there they have sat ever since until a couple days ago! That box was the last thing I saw when I left for the West Coast in May and the first thing I saw upon my return. Meanwhile, I continued to make do with the weird assortment of glassware remnants composed of survivors from other matched sets and garage sale finds from the old days.

Recently, I finally worked up the ambition to clean out my kitchen cabinets...
...

Jo says "There were 16 then 15 of my Anchor Hocking Beverage Set" about Anchor Hocking Trivium Beverage Set

To the Point

So there I was looking at glasses trying to remember which ones Rudi recommended. I bought a 16- piece glassware set by Anchor Hocking. The style is called Trivium.

A Closer View

When I got home I looked Anchor Hocking Trivium up online and saw some bad reviews. But I only paid $10.00 for eight 11-ounce double old-fashioned glasses and eight 16- ounce coolers. I would have preferred a color but there was only clear in this style. I just wanted to get through Thanksgiving with a new set of glasses.

I liked the style of the Anchor Hocking Trivium glasses. They are simple but have an hour glass design. I thought out of all the ones on the shelf these would be the least likely to spill. They are dishwasher safe and seemed to be thick enough so that they would last at least a month. I have Pfaltzgraff glasses that have been with me for 15 years!

I am the type of person who saves new things. Not wanting the glasses scratched I didn't use them but my husband did. The point is the...
...

RudiXeno says "Luminarc Working Glass: The Glass for a Man's Hand" about Luminarc Working Glass 16 pc. Set

Whenever I'm at home (as I am now), there is always to be sure a tall beverage sitting beside me. Usually it's either Iced Tea or ice water. It's always there, always.

Over the years I have become very particular about the glasses I use. I like a substantial piece of glass that holds a generous amount of beverage and feels good in my grasp. Plastic cups just don't cut it for me.

Several years ago I came across Luminarc Working Glasses. These glasses available most often in 14oz and 21oz sizes fit the bill nicely. They were originally designed for storing jelly and preserves and can still be purchased with snap on lids.

Luminarc Working Glasses are quite substantial. The 14 oz glass weighs over 10 ozs, while the 21 oz glass weighs just under a pound. They have a great feeling in your hand. the glasses tend to feel indestructible, but of course they do shatter rather nicely if dropped on a tiled floor

The thick walls of these glasses make them ideal for iced drinks since...
...

wildcatkatie says "Lolita glasses are fun & sassy. They make the perfect gift!" about Lolita Glassware

Lolita - the owner and designer behind Lolita glassware - worked in the fashion industry for the likes of Christian Dior and Donna Karan before starting her very own business, Designs by Lolita, after an inspirational girls' night out in 2001. That night, Lolita realized that glassware should have some flair, and thus began her successful career with Designs by Lolita! (Or so the story goes on her website.)

My first experience with Lolita glassware was in July 2008. I stumbled upon it while perusing the rows and rows of exotic wines at a wine boutique in Chicago. I immediately fell in love with the flirtatious, sassy and often downright cute hand-painted designs. I proceeded to scoop up several different designs that day for my girl friends' birthdays, including Social Butterfly, Wild Child, Flirt and Little Black Dress.

Designs by Lolita paints more than just wine glasses. There are also martini glasses, shot glasses, margarita glasses, pilsner glasses, and even ice cream sundae bowls!...
...

My entire department (360 people) received the 22 oz beverage thermos mug as a gift and most of them leak where the lid meet the rim when you drink hot beverages out of them. We are very disappointed with this product because we ordered them for everyone to eliminate the use of Styrofoam cups. Now we are donating or throwing most of them away. The people that continue to use them despite the leaking have to use paper towels to set them on and have to be careful because they can drip on your keyboards, desks, and your clothes. It is a huge waste and disappointment.
...

A few months ago I borrowed a cup from a friend. I was amazed at the quality of this cup and even more surprised that after several hours sitting on my kitchen counter it hadn't produced any condensation. I'm very OCD and have this fear of a cup sweating and the condensation getting on something else. My OCD is so bad that I pull out the thirsty-something coasters and use them on the kitchen counter! Well, not anymore--no siree bob! I read Awlafon's review on the Tervis Tumblers and when I saw the picture I thought to myself, "Other than the design that is the same cup I borrowed from Debbie." I guess borrowed isn't the correct word because I was so fascinated with the quality of this cup that I didn't want to return it but I knew I really needed to. So, I began searching for a Tervis tumbler.

Of course my first place was Amazon and I just about fainted when I saw the prices. First of all, I didn't want a 4-piece set for $44.95. I just wanted one for me and I didn't...
...

When I first saw the Tervis Tumbler (www.tervis.com) I was impressed. Not so much by what the website had to say about it but what a friend of mine told me. It's guaranteed for life. Anything goes wrong - send it back & they'll replace it for free. Even the plastic lid & straw. I ran mine through the dishwasher every day and after about 30 washes a crack appeared. I sent it back and got my free replacement within a week - even with the customization I had ordered. And the best part about Tervis Tumblers is they don't "sweat." I'm from the South so every drink I have is first filled to the top with ice. This can be a problem at work when the condensation leaks all over your desk. None of this with the Tervis. Keeps cold stuff cold and hot stuff hot. The best glass I've ever used!!!...

I really like these high ball glasses by Macy's in-house brand, The Cellar (shown at left in the picture). They are durable, classy, and simple enough to use everyday. I registered for 12 -- 3 sets of 4 -- and was so pleased with them that I ended up buying an extra set a few months after our wedding. I also have The Cellar's matching Double Old Fashioned glasses (shown at right in the picture.

These glasses are substantial enough so that they are not easily knocked over. The base of the glass is pretty thick so that even when they are full, most of the weight is at the bottom. The curved base adds an additional element of class to already nice glassware. I like that they are fairly inexpensive (for glassware) so that if (or when) we do break one, I can replace it easily.

We use them as everyday glasses, so they hold up to frequent use. They can also be used for fun mixed drinks like a mojito or a Tequila Sunrise or Sunset (my personal favorite).

We also frequently use...
...

My best friend bought me these glasses for Christmas because she said I needed some COOL glasses. Well, these definitely are COOL, and after using them I can say they are perfect for shakes!

The Design
The glasses come in two sizes, 12oz and 20oz. My friend bought me a set of 4 of the 20oz glasses. Each set comes with 4 different colored glasses: Red, Orange, Blue and Green. The color is striped along the bottom half of the glass giving you just enough color to remember which glass is yours when you are using it. The top half is thin clear glass while the bottom half is a thicker, heavier glass. This means the glass is very stable and there's no worry of it tipping over.

Using the Glasses
I brought these glasses out for my Birthday celebration because we wanted Strawberry Shakes. These glasses ended up working perfectly for that! Due to the large opening on the top of the glass, I could pour the shakes from my blender with ease and NO spilling! Imagine that! You could see...
...

To the Point
Marquis by Waterford Allegra Platinum Wine glasses were one of the glasses my daughter and son-in-law chose for their registry. We used them over Thanksgiving. They looked wonderful on the table.

A Closer Look

Just as a "by the way" my son-in-law really doesn't like these. He prefers much larger glasses for wine. I put these on the table for water and/or wine.

These are made of lead crystal and felt fairly durable. They aren't as heavy as other goblets I have used. They are made in Slovenia.

These glasses have a beautiful rim of platinum on each glass which was a reason she chose them. Her china is rimmed in platinum.

Each glass is 8 inches high and costs $25.00. They are not machine washable!

There is a fluted type design on the base of the glass. You can see it in my picture but you can also see it and buy this glass here: http://www.crystalclassics.com/marquis/stems/allegraplat.htm

Jo's Viewpoint
I like it!

...

LaurieM says "These Custard Cups can be used for so much more than custard!" about Anchor Hocking Fireking Glass Custard Cups

Until I had children and animals, I never fully appreciated my set of eight Anchor Hocking Fireking Glass Custard Cups. I use them almost daily now and absolutely love them.

The Custard Cups

These round, clear, 6 oz, glass custard cups are two inches in diameter and have a rolled rim. The thickness of the glass makes the cups a bit heavier in weight than other custard cups. I believe that is the reason why they are so durable.

They are oven, microwave, and dishwasher safe.

My Experience

These custard cups are used daily by my family because there are unlimited uses for them. Listed below are just some of the uses that I have found for them:

~At dinnertime to put individual servings of vegetables in
~For melted butter when having salt potatoes or other foods
~For condiments when having a party
~For individual servings of Jell-O, puddings and of course custard
~For separating ingredients when baking
~For canned cat food (I have separate ones I use for the cat)
~At Easter, I have even......

The majority of mixing bowls that I had before getting this Pyrex Prepware 6-Piece Sculptured Mixing Bowl Set set were plastic and stained. Needless to say, I was happy to accept these bowls from my mother-in-law and give them a try. Nearly two years later, they are still one of the most used mixing bowl sets in my kitchen.

The Bowls

This six piece Pyrex mixing bowl set includes three clear glass mixing bowls (3, 6, and 10 cup) with navy colored plastic lids. The outside of the mixing bowls are ribbed to add a little flair to the set. These bowls are lightweight yet durable.

According to the manufacturer, the product features of this Pyrex set are as follows:

~Sculptured and fluted bowls bring style to the table
~Practical for food preparation - beautiful for serving
~Pyrex glass is non-porous, so it won't absorb food odors, food flavors or food stains
~Pyrex glass is safe in the oven, microwave, refrigerator, freezer, and dishwasher
~Manufacturer's 2-year full warranty on ovenware...
...
