When I went to Walmart to buy a sewing machine, I was looking for something that wasn't too complicated and didn't cost more than a hundred dollars. I just needed something quick and for the amount of money I had, and I was told that it was great for beginners and pretty good quality. I don't know if other versions of Brother sewing machines are any good, but I wouldn't suggest anyone to buy this one even if its only for temporary use.

Because there is no clip for where the thread has to go, every time you start to sew the thread starts to come off. If you go too fast, it flies off, and even you're only going a moderate speed it still continuously raises up until its come off. Which means untangling thread every time this happens and putting it back on.

Secondly, the thread often gets tangled inside the machine, where it really matters. Which can really get your pretty frustrated, and make you want to throw the junk at the wall. Even if you think you know how to fix it, you can't. Apparently...
...

I was a beginner sewer. This machine helped me become comfortable and confident in it and sewing. I have, in the last two years of owning it, become quite the sewer. I would reccommend this machine to the beginner and expert sewer. It has been wonderful! The buttonholes are easy, and that was one thing I was not sure about. It was so simple and easy to understand. The machine is incredibly user friendly and easy to learn. The number of preprogrammed stitch patterns is helpful, and fun. I have even made my first quilt, and although it took time, the machine made it easy. It even has a walking foot to make your own stitch lines for quilting. I recommend this machine because of it's versatility and ease of use. The books that come with it are laid out very well and very easy to understand also. It lists each of the 60 stitches and which foot to use for that specific stitch. The machine also lets you decide just how long the stitch you choose is.
...

reed7333 says "The Singer 1748 is a great little machine." about Singer Singer 1748

The Singer 1748 is a great little machine for the money. I do a lot of sewing for my children and grandchildren and it has been a work horse. I don't need all the fancy bells and whistles when I want to sew. It does have 32 different stitches and a buttonholer, a free arm and some other little features. I bought this when my other Singer that was over thirty years old finally died. My old Singer was a basic model so when I was looking for a new machine, the Singer 1748 caught my eye and I have been very happy with it. I have made small baby quilts, clothes, and a comforter on the machine and didn't have a problem. I have read good and bad things about the machine but I believe it is a very good machine. I have used it a lot and it has been very good to me. I like to sew and make clothes or whatever my children or grandchildren need. My children think that I made a good choice when I bought the Singer 1748.
...

I am a Tailoring and Design Artist and I use a Bernina Sewing Machine, which I call my business partner. This machine is sturdy enough to handle heavy fabrics like denim and upholstery fabrics and gentle enough to accommodate the finest of fabrics. This is a great machine for people who love to sew. Being a seasoned seamstress it's important to have a sewing machine that performs accurately on a variety of projects. I use my Bernina to make window treatments for my customers, and I get great stitches. When I design a unique prom dress or formal outfit for a client neat seams are key to the success of the finished garment. I can make a few adjustments and it accommodates fine fabrics. I do a lot of Mens' slacks and shirts and I get great top-stitching and buttonholes. I also teach sewing classes and I highly recommen the Bernina to clients who are serious about sewing on a regular basis.
...

The very first time I used my Euro-Pro sewing machine was to make seat covers for my then husband's truck. At first I thought I was in trouble because I had not used my sewing machine yet, but with my instruction booklet on how to get starter, I had no problems at all. The Euro-Pro is made to sew heavy material, which I made the seat covers in a heavy corduay. Since then, I have made some beautiful quilts. I won't use any other sewing machine. I love my Euro-Pro, and have told others about it. I have even lent it out on occassion. But not for very long, as I keep it swt up, ready to use at a minutes notice, for myself or to help others when needed.
...

I got this machine for Christmas last year - and believe me when I say I am no seamstress. I wanted an easy machine to learn that could do some basic stitches. This was a great machine to get for me - it came with an instructional cd that I could watch on the computer as I was working on the machine. I was so happy that I could learn the basics quite quickly and start sewing almost right away. I have used the machine several times and I've been very pleased with the quality of the work, the ease of use, and the durability of the machine. I keep mine stored, but it's very simple to pull out, plug in and begin using - it's no more difficult to get out and set up than an ironing board. I think this would be a great practical machine for young or beginning sewers and also for those who sew as a hobby or only on occasion. I like all the different stitches that the machine does automatically, and I also like the button hole maker that it came with, but my favorite feature is the automatic bobbin...
...

My daughter needed a sewing machine for a home-schooled Home Economics class. I had a bigger sewing machine; but her dad bought the XL-2610 for her. it was a good idea for her to have a machine of her own, without borrowing mine all the time. She liked it because it was a pink color. I sat down with her and her new machine yesterday, and the instructions manual is very clear on how everything works and is set-up. it is not a very big bulky sewing machine. It was easy to thread. I love knowing it has a drop-in bobbin. It is not too hravy to carry and take with you. it made very good stitches and the dials were easy to read. I believe this is going to be a good machine for her to get through her class and even beyond that. It is a good starter machine for anyone who is beginning to learn how to sew. It is very reasonably priced.
...

This machine does beautiful machine embroidery as well as sewing through any fabric flawlessly. Comes with plastic case, I personally would prefer a metal machine case rather than the plastic case it its manufactured in. It is also very heavy, so if you are looking for one to take with you to classes it can be done but you will need muscles or a rolling bag. I purchased the Palette software so that I can download designs from the internet to a blank card that fits in to the side of the machine. If you need help, the help screens are awesome! It will tell you how to put in a zipper, do a blind hem stitch and so much more. I've had this sewing machine for many years and it has been very dependable....no repairs required, only cleaning & maintenance. This is an excellent versatile high-quality machine for anyone from the beginner to the pro-- it does it all (except cut out the pattern...) It sews well and is fun to use. I have had several sewing machines and if I ever have to purchase...
...

This is the serger of all sergers! The airflow threader is a dream come true after threading another brand of serger with tweezers for 15 years. It has an amazing variety of stitch options, including Baby Lock's exclusive Wave Stitch. One of my favorite stitch feature is the gathering stitch which cuts down the time consuming way of gathering by hand. It features a built in thread cutter, snap on multipurpose presser foot, built in storage and It is without question the easiest coverstitch serger I've ever used. It is easy to thread. The stitch quality is beyond compare. Never have I seen another serger produce such a lovely satin looking stitch with no puckering. I've been able to go from light weight fabric to heavy denim with out a skipped stitch and the look of the stitch stays the same.. Mine came with an instructional video and I think that comes standard with the purchase of the machine and is extremely helpful. It shows you ways to use this machine that you never even knew a...
...

But it gets the job done. This machine was bought about 10 years ago and I use it on a daily basis as sewing is my job. The most surprising for me is how quiet it is while sewing. The features are:

• 19 Built-in Stitches: To handle all you sewing needs: Stretch, overlock, blind-hem and more
• Built-in Buttonholer: Creates buttonholes any size.
• Free Arm Design: To sew sleeves, cuffs, and hems. Converts to flatbed for conventional sewing.
• One Dial selector System: Just turn the dial to the selected stitch and start sewing.
• Built in sewing light: Shines light directly on the sewing area.
• Lightweight Metal Construction: Provides strength without weight.

This little inexpensive sewing machine does and excellent job. It is portable and lighweight. It is extremely easy to thread and to sew with. The instruction guide is very easy to understand. This machine is one tough worker. I've sewed everything from fine lace to jean material and it doesn't skip a beat. It is an great machine for beginners and for advanced sewers. It has many capabilites and sewing options. It is very easy to jump from one option to another. The bobbin is a standard one and I wish it was the drop in but it is okay as long as you tread it right and as long as the tread is wrapped correctly on the bobbin spool. The machine comes with quite a few sewing feet that are easy to put on. The one thing I don't like is how quickly the bobbin area becomes filled with compacted dust. The brush they provide with the machine doesn't do a good enough job of cleaning. I just take canned air and blow it out. You do have to constantly check for buildup. All in all...
...

Brother's computerized SE270D features 97 built-in embroidery designs including 27 Mickey Mouse and friends designs and 70 additional designs for floral, seasonal and many more themes. There are five built-in monogramming fonts in three different sizes help create a variety of insignia, logos, and emblems.

The machine in general - threading the needle couldn't be easier, you slide in the cartridge and it does the rest for you! It has a foot pedal, but it also has a button on the front of the machine that works the same way if, like me, you are not so talented with the foot work! The machine is lightweight enough to enable you to move it around easily, but heavy enough to be sturdy and sound. The touch screen is extremely easy to use, and it even includes a help section, in case you should get stuck and don't want to go back to the manual. Overall, it has all the features of older machines, plus some, without being too complicated that you aren't use it!

It has quite a few Brother Embroidery...
...

I got this machine when I was learning to quilt. It is almost 10 years old and still going strong. There is not much that this machine can't do. I use it often when I give sewing lessons to children because I can control the speed level. The children are also enthralled by the many stitches and this helps to keep their interest. But the machine, by its very name, is made for quilting. I have made full-sized quilts and done all the stippling myself. The machine can handle itself in just about any sewing room. It is also a very portable machine. It's lightweight enough for my young daughter to carry around and great for those times when we have to take our projects on the go. I love this machine and highly recommend it.
...

happy123 says "Spend a little more and get quality" about Brother Sewing Machine - XL-5232

This might be good for the occaisional hem, but in my opinion it would be better to spend a little more and get a sewing machine that doesn't skip stitches or regularly jam. This seems to have problems with both of those issues.

I purchased it to use for quilting. Wrong move. The preser foot regularly gets jammed with thread, causing you to stop, trim and start over, wasting much time. The bobbin can be difficult to thread, and, again, often gets jammed.

For the money, I thought it was a good deal. I was wrong. I should have spent just a little more to get a machine with more features and and better quality.

This might be good for a very beginner machine for a young girl, but not for the serious seamstress. It would surely bring nothing but frustration and disappointment.

I tend to try to look at the positive, and don't relish the idea of writing a negative review, but cannot in good conscience recommend this machine to anyone knowing what a poor job it truly does....
...

I purchased this machine with the last bonus from my company. I was so excited, but that did not last long. After 2 trips to the shop it still does not work. The bobbin jams, the thread breaks, then the timing gets messed up. Now Singer will not do anything for me. I cannot afford to fix it or to buy a new machine. As it is I have over $1000 wrapped up in this machine. Now it is just a very large paperweight. I would love to see a class action lawsuit started against Singer. There are more people out there that have had trouble with the first series of Futura machines. The bobbin case and timing is an issue. I have not been able to complete an embroidery design. It jams and even broke my embroidery unit once. I have done everything Singer has told me to do and still it is not working. I am really bitter right now.
...

I have been wanting a new sewing machine for many years. I stopped sewing around 1990 when my son was born and sewing no longer saved money. My old machine was 35 years old and just didn't look worth fixing up when I dragged it out of the closet this summer.

I researched sewing machines for several months, both online and in consumer research magazines. This machine perfectly fit my needs. I wanted a machine that I could sew, learn to embroider, and also learn to quilt, all with the same machine. I did not want or need the top of the line machines rated best by Consumer Reports, nor could I afford them!

I got this machine on sale online for nearly 70% off. My only challenge was realizing I had never set up a machine for use on my own. Fortunately my husband is a whiz at such things and I got my new machine up and running. It is smooth, has many options for me yet to learn, and the instructions are easy to follow.

I purchased the Brother CS6000 in 2006 from Wal-Mart and so far all I have been able to accomplish is a few mending projects. The machine is made for people with tiny nimble fingers. The glare from the LED light hitting the chrome parts makes it near impossible to see what you are doing. The operating instruction book is not well organized and incomplete. Heavy duty sewing is out of the question. For light material sewing, no matter how you set the pressure, material wanders and stitches bind preventing forward movement of material. I have been sewing for years and this machine is very aggravating.
...

eleesche says "The Singer Ingenuity 7436 is okay for beginners." about Singer Sewing Machine - Ingenuity - 7436

I wish I'd taken more time and done more research before purchasing this machine.

Here are the features I like about the machine:

1. Machine threading

2. Needle threading

3. Bobbin rewinding

Here is a list of reasons I would not purchase it again.

1. The light is very dim. One must set-up additional light near the machine.

2. The reverse button is slow to respond causing one to mis-judge where stitches will reinforce

3. The darning stitch can be used only in forward, not in reverse. One must keep moving to a beginning place and start again. Darning takes a lot longer.

4. The book does not give information about additional accessories such as what type of bobbins to purchase. Also a search on this website turns up nothing.

If you are a beginner and do not intend to progress beyond the beginning stage, then you might be very happy with this machine. However, if you intend for your sewing to improve then you would be better off investing in a better machine.
...

pmblock says "Absolutely trouble free! Best machine for the price." about Husqvarna Viking Madison

I absolutely love the Husqvarna Viking Madison. I am so glad I purchased it! As a matter of fact, now that I know how great it is, I would have paid considerably more to have the worry free, smooth operation that my Madison gives me. Before this purchase, I had practically given up sewing. I had a Kenmore machine that made me feel like an idiot. No matter what I did, I kept have tension issues and the dreaded "thread nests". A friend told me if I bought a Husqvarna machine, those problems would be over. I went to look at the machines, but most were out of my price range - plus I was still a bit skeptical on any machine solving my problems. Once the salesperson showed me that the machine could sew through four layers of jean material, then glide through chiffon with NO ADJUSTMENTS NECESSARY I was sold! By far, the best feature on this machine is Husqvarna's patented pressure sensor feature - I think this is what keeps the thread issues from happening (if I am correctly...
...

crissyk says "Best Brother sewing machine for beginners" about Brother Sewing Machine - CE-4000

My husband purchased this for me a number of years ago. I was a beginner sewer and still am. I used it quite often when he first purchased it for me. I was able to make many small items such as baby comforters for cribs. I made some pillow, pillow covers. I tried to get into making cloths but that was way beyond me. The sewing machine is very light weight. It is easy to use. Has some great features. I wish I had more time to use it. I occasional take it out now for small sewing jobs. My neighbor has also used it a few times with out ever having a problem with it. It is very easy to set up the thread and get it started. I'm thinking about taking it out to make some cute curtains for the kitchen. It really is that simple to use. The directions that come with it are very easy to read and understand. Nothing complicated about them. This machine would be a great gift for a young person to get started if they were into fashion. They could easily make some really cute outfits for little cost of...
...
