This little inexpensive sewing machine does and excellent job. It is portable and lighweight. It is extremely easy to thread and to sew with. The instruction guide is very easy to understand. This machine is one tough worker. I've sewed everything from fine lace to jean material and it doesn't skip a beat. It is an great machine for beginners and for advanced sewers. It has many capabilites and sewing options. It is very easy to jump from one option to another. The bobbin is a standard one and I wish it was the drop in but it is okay as long as you tread it right and as long as the tread is wrapped correctly on the bobbin spool. The machine comes with quite a few sewing feet that are easy to put on. The one thing I don't like is how quickly the bobbin area becomes filled with compacted dust. The brush they provide with the machine doesn't do a good enough job of cleaning. I just take canned air and blow it out. You do have to constantly check for buildup. All in all...
...

Brother's computerized SE270D features 97 built-in embroidery designs including 27 Mickey Mouse and friends designs and 70 additional designs for floral, seasonal and many more themes. There are five built-in monogramming fonts in three different sizes help create a variety of insignia, logos, and emblems.

The machine in general - threading the needle couldn't be easier, you slide in the cartridge and it does the rest for you! It has a foot pedal, but it also has a button on the front of the machine that works the same way if, like me, you are not so talented with the foot work! The machine is lightweight enough to enable you to move it around easily, but heavy enough to be sturdy and sound. The touch screen is extremely easy to use, and it even includes a help section, in case you should get stuck and don't want to go back to the manual. Overall, it has all the features of older machines, plus some, without being too complicated that you aren't use it!

It has quite a few Brother Embroidery...
...

I got this machine when I was learning to quilt. It is almost 10 years old and still going strong. There is not much that this machine can't do. I use it often when I give sewing lessons to children because I can control the speed level. The children are also enthralled by the many stitches and this helps to keep their interest. But the machine, by its very name, is made for quilting. I have made full-sized quilts and done all the stippling myself. The machine can handle itself in just about any sewing room. It is also a very portable machine. It's lightweight enough for my young daughter to carry around and great for those times when we have to take our projects on the go. I love this machine and highly recommend it.
...

happy123 says "Spend a little more and get quality" about Brother Sewing Machine - XL-5232

This might be good for the occaisional hem, but in my opinion it would be better to spend a little more and get a sewing machine that doesn't skip stitches or regularly jam. This seems to have problems with both of those issues.

I purchased it to use for quilting. Wrong move. The preser foot regularly gets jammed with thread, causing you to stop, trim and start over, wasting much time. The bobbin can be difficult to thread, and, again, often gets jammed.

For the money, I thought it was a good deal. I was wrong. I should have spent just a little more to get a machine with more features and and better quality.

This might be good for a very beginner machine for a young girl, but not for the serious seamstress. It would surely bring nothing but frustration and disappointment.

I tend to try to look at the positive, and don't relish the idea of writing a negative review, but cannot in good conscience recommend this machine to anyone knowing what a poor job it truly does....
...

I purchased this machine with the last bonus from my company. I was so excited, but that did not last long. After 2 trips to the shop it still does not work. The bobbin jams, the thread breaks, then the timing gets messed up. Now Singer will not do anything for me. I cannot afford to fix it or to buy a new machine. As it is I have over $1000 wrapped up in this machine. Now it is just a very large paperweight. I would love to see a class action lawsuit started against Singer. There are more people out there that have had trouble with the first series of Futura machines. The bobbin case and timing is an issue. I have not been able to complete an embroidery design. It jams and even broke my embroidery unit once. I have done everything Singer has told me to do and still it is not working. I am really bitter right now.
...

BonMom says "Awesome machine and what a bargain!" about Brother Sewing Machine - Computerized - CS6000i

I have been wanting a new sewing machine for many years. I stopped sewing around 1990 when my son was born and sewing no longer saved money. My old machine was 35 years old and just didn't look worth fixing up when I dragged it out of the closet this summer.

I researched sewing machines for several months, both online and in consumer research magazines. This machine perfectly fit my needs. I wanted a machine that I could sew, learn to embroider, and also learn to quilt, all with the same machine. I did not want or need the top of the line machines rated best by Consumer Reports, nor could I afford them!

I got this machine on sale online for nearly 70% off. My only challenge was realizing I had never set up a machine for use on my own. Fortunately my husband is a whiz at such things and I got my new machine up and running. It is smooth, has many options for me yet to learn, and the instructions are easy to follow.

I do need to clarify that I have only done basic sewing so far...
...

I purchased the Brother CS6000 in 2006 from Wal-Mart and so far all I have been able to accomplish is a few mending projects. The machine is made for people with tiny nimble fingers. The glare from the LED light hitting the chrome parts makes it near impossible to see what you are doing. The operating instruction book is not well organized and incomplete. Heavy duty sewing is out of the question. For light material sewing, no matter how you set the pressure, material wanders and stitches bind preventing forward movement of material. I have been sewing for years and this machine is very aggravating.
...

eleesche says "The Singer Ingenuity 7436 is okay for beginners." about Singer Sewing Machine - Ingenuity - 7436

I wish I'd taken more time and done more research before purchasing this machine.

Here are the features I like about the machine:

1. Machine threading

2. Needle threading

3. Bobbin rewinding

Here is a list of reasons I would not purchase it again.

1. The light is very dim. One must set-up additional light near the machine.

2. The reverse button is slow to respond causing one to mis-judge where stitches will reinforce

3. The darning stitch can be used only in forward, not in reverse. One must keep moving to a beginning place and start again. Darning takes a lot longer.

4. The book does not give information about additional accessories such as what type of bobbins to purchase. Also a search on this website turns up nothing.

If you are a beginner and do not intend to progress beyond the beginning stage, then you might be very happy with this machine. However, if you intend for your sewing to improve then you would be better off investing in a better machine.
...

I absolutely love the Husqvarna Viking Madison. I am so glad I purchased it! As a matter of fact, now that I know how great it is, I would have paid considerably more to have the worry free, smooth operation that my Madison gives me. Before this purchase, I had practically given up sewing. I had a Kenmore machine that made me feel like an idiot. No matter what I did, I kept have tension issues and the dreaded "thread nests". A friend told me if I bought a Husqvarna machine, those problems would be over. I went to look at the machines, but most were out of my price range - plus I was still a bit skeptical on any machine solving my problems. Once the salesperson showed me that the machine could sew through four layers of jean material, then glide through chiffon with NO ADJUSTMENTS NECESSARY I was sold! By far, the best feature on this machine is Husqvarna's patented pressure sensor feature - I think this is what keeps the thread issues from happening (if I am correctly...
...

My husband purchased this for me a number of years ago. I was a beginner sewer and still am. I used it quite often when he first purchased it for me. I was able to make many small items such as baby comforters for cribs. I made some pillow, pillow covers. I tried to get into making cloths but that was way beyond me. The sewing machine is very light weight. It is easy to use. Has some great features. I wish I had more time to use it. I occasional take it out now for small sewing jobs. My neighbor has also used it a few times with out ever having a problem with it. It is very easy to set up the thread and get it started. I'm thinking about taking it out to make some cute curtains for the kitchen. It really is that simple to use. The directions that come with it are very easy to read and understand. Nothing complicated about them. This machine would be a great gift for a young person to get started if they were into fashion. They could easily make some really cute outfits for little cost of...
...

I loved the Singer machine I grew up with. It had all metal parts and went through a flood where the whole machine was covered in mud, even the parts inside. My uncle cleaned it and it is still working 30 years later.

About a month ago I bought a Brother CE5000 Limited Edition Project Runway Sewing machine. I researched online, read reviews, and searched the stores for the best deal. Surprisingly this machine is pretty economical for all of the extra's it has to offer. I really enjoy the self threading option, built in light so I can sew in the dark. My eyes are very sensitive and I tend like to watch tv while I'm sewing so I can do that with the lights off and see everything perfect. Its light weight enough that I move it all around the house and put it away in the closet after each use.

For a beginner sewer there are more stitches than you will ever try out (87 stitch patterns in all) and am glad I didn't spend more to get additional stitching that I thought I would long for once I bought this one. Its really not necessary. The LCD read out took a little getting use to but after reading the book for a quick minute, I understand and everything else was pretty intuitive. I had it out of the box and......

The Brother CSM 6000i is a great basic machine. It does all the tricks that a beginners machine should do. It is not a work horse, the presser feet are difficult to change. And, some special feet require a screw driver and removal of part of the presser bar. I cannot get the button foot to work without an error message. Oh, and lest you think I'm a new-bie, I've been sewing costumes, clothing, quilts, wall hangings, table runners and hand bags for the last 30 years.

My 30 year old Bernina finally died and after reading reviews I thought that the Brother CSM 6000i would be a great replacement for my bottom of the line very, very basic machine. But I was wrong.

It did not come with a free motion quilting/mending foot. After purchasing a Janome foot that fit, and dropped the feed dogs, I was ready to run. But the free motion stitch is not free, the foot thumps the fabric and even with the feed dogs down there is a jarring jerking pause and tug after each stitch. I am finding...
...

I sew a lot so I really had to have a serger. The Bernina 700D is wonderful. Once you learn how to thread it. My only con for this machine is that it's so hard to thread. Particularly the two bottom threads. One of them has to be above ther other in a certain part of the threading or the thread will break every time you sew. I spent so many hours threading and rethreading this machine until I figured this out.

Otherwise, it's a great machine! It has a very even stitch, easy stitch adjustment for if I want to do a rolled hem, a three thread stitch instead of a four thread. And a blade that just flips up if I don't want to use it. Such as the serge stitch around the arms of a t-shirt.

You can use serger thread or they have thread toppers for if you just want to use regular spools of thread instead of the large serger kind. Which I do frequently since serger thread is difficult to find in exactly the color that I want.
...

I've had the Babylock BL7800 for years and I use it all the time. It's a wonderful machine! I've only had to take it in once to have it repaired and that was after 7 years of use so that's pretty good for a heavily-used machine.

I love the easy button-hole maker. You just put your button in the foot, select what type of button hole you want, and sew away. I also love the blind hem stitch, there are several options for this stitch depending on what fabric you are using and there's a foot that keeps your fabric liked up so you get an even hem.

I also love the ability to manually select my needle position if I want to position it somewhere other than the standard position for my selected stitch. Also, the ability to lengthen or shorten my stitch with a push of a button is wonderful. No more re-positioning my stitch for basting or gathering and then having to remember what my usual stitch length is!
...

Joan59 says "For the price it is a good starter machine" about Singer 7442

Looking for a good home sewing machine then you might want to consider purchasing the Singer 7442. It can be used for simply fixing those small rips in blue jeans, hemming, or other household repairs, yet it can accomplish several difficult craft sewing projects such as making a quilted tablerunner.

Because it is not an overly expensive investment it makes for a very good starter machine. It comes with a very detailed instruction booklet that anyone can easily read and understand how to operate and use the machines features. This is a plus.

It would be nice if it came incased, however, it does come with a vinyl covering. I prefer the hard cover casing for storage, transporting, or simply keeping it completely dust free. If these are of no concern then once again it would be a great purchase.
...

singer sewing machines are the best sewing machines. my parents always bought and used and recommended singer sewing machines to all their relatives friends and there co-workers and neighbors. i was 13 years of age when i got my frst sewing machine for my 13th birthday at my 13th birthday party with all of my friends and relatives and classmates there. there was a lot of jealousy among all of my girl friends that were there that day. a few of my friends even went home that day and asked there parents to get them a portable new singer sewing machine for there next birthday present. singer sewing machines are easy to thread, have little light that gives plenty of light to see to sew by. the bobbin is also easy to load and easy to replace/ it is also easy to learn to sew on. singer sewing machines are very easy to teach others to sew on, the needle guard makes it easy to not be afraid of getting your fingers under the needle, so you don't need to be afraid of getting your finger stabbed. i'm...
...

dianemsternig says "I have always bought Kenmore sewing machines. " about Kenmore Sewing Machine

My Kenmore sewing machine is the model 385.16520000. I have had it for more than 7 years now and it still performs very well. I use it to make quilts, home decorations, curtains and drapes, not to mention mending countless articles of clothing. I have replaced many zippers with the easy to use zipper foot. I just love the buttons hole maker. It is so simple to work with. Sewing buttons on are a breeze. The zigzag stitches are remarkable. I make alot of wall hangings and use that all the time. The many features of this machine made it so simple to choose from the many other models of Kenmore machines. As long as I have had this machine and I use it almost on a daily basis, I have not had to have any kind of maintenance done on the machine. I keep it well cleaned and oil it when needed. I would highly recommend this machine or any other Kenmore sewing machine. They are modestly priced where just about anyone can afford them.
...
