I went to an orthopedic specialist for a full body bone scan and discovered my bones, in my doctor's words, "look like sponges!" That set me back a bit! He told me to take 2000 units of calcium citrate a day and he recommended Citracal. (I was told that the citrate helps your body absorb the calcium.) The product has 500 units of Vitamin D and 400/mg. of Calcium in two tablets. I've now been taking this product for three years and there has been a marked difference in my scan. At 64 now, I cannot afford to have any breaks and I'm trying to guard against the possibility. Most women are calcium deficient and so are most men! My partner was just diagnosed with a dangerously low Vitamin D deficiency and he has joined me in taking Citracal every day. I am against the new calcium injectibles, like Reclast, because they are new and we haven't discovered just how good something like this is that you only get once a year. My doctor did recommend it but I'm sticking with the Citracal,...

When Dr. Forbes suggested I try Caltrate 600 + D, she also gave me a cheaper option -- CVS Pharmacy Calcium 600 + D. These two medicines may not be identical but they deliver the same payload of 600 mg. Calcium and 400 IU Vitamin D. I was surprised at how much more economical they were. I mean, 60 caplets Caltrate 600 + D for $8 or 400 caplets CVS Pharmacy Calcium 600 + D at $11.99! Is that a deal or what -- DUH?!!! Like the Caltrate, this CVS stuff only requires taking two a day so now I'm all set for 200 days for less than $12.

STATS:

Aside from the 600 mg. Calcium (as Calcium Carbonate) and 400 IU Vitamin D (as Cholecalciferol), this medicine also includes Croscarmellose, Cellulose (Plant Origin), Cellulose Coating, Titanium Dioxide Color, Vegetable Magnesium Stearate, and FD&C Yellow No. 6 Lake.

I am a small boned woman and have always been told to make sure to take my calcium daily. This was always a struggle, since I hate swallowing these huge pills and could not get myself to take it consistently. I have tried the chewables and other kinds, but didn't like them, so always ended up giving them away. I bought the Adora Milk chocolate Calcium in Target, but by then, was pretty skeptical that I would like it. From previous experience, I expected the consistency to be chalky or have a medicinal taste, but instead the first time I tried it I couldn't believe that it contained calcium. It was a rich, smooth chocolate that tasted delicioius. Target stopped selling them for some reason, but I now go to Whole Foods especially to buy them, and though not cheap, they are well worth the price. After I had my gall bladder removed, after eating I always got cramping and the runs and could not go anywhere if I ate, so if I had to go anywhere I did'nt eat till I returned home. I now take half of a Caltrate after or before I eat and the problem is gone, after suffering for two years I'm able to have a normal life again. Still watch the fat intake but a lot of us have this problem after gall bladder removal and the doctors don't tell you anything about the outcome of not having a gall bladder.

I am required to take Calcium Citrate daily due to having Gastric Bypass surgery. The Twinlab Calcium Citrate Chewable Wafers with Manesium and Vit. D seems to do the job well. I cannot swallow pills due to the surgery, so must take supplements in chewable, liquid or sublingual. These wafers need to be chewed 4 times a day (which seems average for most calcium supplements) and have a pleasant enough taste. At first, I wasn't sure I'd like them in the long run, but now I don't mind taking them at all.

They have a mild citrus taste to them. Not too tart. They do give me some burps afterward, but I think that is just because it's Calcium Citrate, not the products problem. They seem to be absorbed well according to lab tests and they contain Vitamin D which aid in the absorption. The price is good when comparing the various Calcium Citrate products. I have mine on auto delivery from Mothernature.com so I always have them.

I dropped in to Dr. Forbes' office yesterday for a check-up and this time we rehauled and updated my medical records. To facilitate this, Dr. Forbes had asked me to bring my medications in so she could check them again. Usually in a case like this, I just bring in prescription meds but this time I took "the works", even including painkillers and vitamin supplements. BINGO! One careful, considered look at that GNC Calcium and Vitamin D supplement I reviewed a few weeks ago and Dr. Forbes suggested something else. She said that someone who is taking Arimidex (or anybody else especially concerned about bone health) could do better than the GNC product. Among her across-the-counter suggestions was Caltrate 600+D Plus Minerals Calcium Supplement. Today I picked up a bottle of 60 tablets at Walgreen's for a little more than $8.00.

In the past year, I've tried a few brands of vitamin supplements hoping to find a calcium pill that I didn't have to chew, but that was also easy to swallow. Calcium tablets tend to be large, and I have trouble swallowing large pills. Luckily, I found Caltrate Calcium Supplement with Vitamin D. Yes, it's still a large pill, but it's coated and shaped so that it goes down fairly easy. I hate it when a large pill begins to melt in your mouth and leaves a bitter taste before you've gotten it down your throat. That's never been a problem with Caltrate.

I really hate to take vitamins (despite working in a health food store in high school and knowing A LOT about vitamins). However, if the vitamins taste good and are chewable, I will make an exception.

That is the case with the Nature's Plus Chewable Calcium pills. They come in Vanilla shake flavor and they are soooo good.

I am only 5'2" and a lightweight, so I am a walking poster for osteoperosis. Taking calcium is critical and the Nature's Plus Chewable and Viactiv are my two stables-- since I dont love milk or yogurt. Cheese is a whole different topic!!!

Each capsule has 250 milligrams of Calcium (it also offer magnesium for aborbption) so I typically take 2-a-day. I can get them online for about $5 and they last me a month. Definitely cheaper than Viactiv!
