I struggled with chronic insomnia for years, but it really started to impact my life when I began college. I was missing classes, assignments and social activities because I was so tired and ended up sleeping all day. I saw psychiatrists and sleep specialists that could not help me, and I was finally prescribed Trazodone after a few trials with different medications. This medication gave me my life back. I was able to sleep all night, every night, and in turn I graduated college with honors and went on to graduate school. Of course, this is a medication, not a miracle, and I do have to go to bed at the same time every night, and I wake up around the same time every morning. I must allow myself at least 8 hours of sleep when I take Trazodone, and if I do not get these 8 hours, I am very drowsy in the morning. I have been taking this medication for 6 years and have yet to experience any side effects. Please ask your doctor about it if you have run out of options! Oh, and make sure to eat
...

Priya2 says "You fall asleep and can still wake up in the morning!" about Ambien Zolpidem Tartrate Medication

Ambien (not CR) has been a really good drug for helping me fall asleep. Prior to taking Ambien, I had taken a few other drugs that made me sleep for waaay too long. Sometimes I slept for 18 hours or more and woke up thinking I only slept 8 hours!

When I mentioned this to my doctor, he suggested Ambien because of its short half-life (4 hours). He prescribed it to me with a warning that after taking a dose, I should go to bed immediately to prevent side effects. Usually when I take it I WANT to go to bed pretty soon because it helps me get tired within minutes! Sometimes I experience a little bit of morning grogginess, but usually it fades once I'm up and about. Just as often, I am able to wake up with no problems at all.

Sometimes I have to vary the dose. If I am really having trouble sleeping or am waking up in the middle of the night, I'll take 10 mg to make sure I sleep through the night. If I am having only mild problems sleeping, I'll take 5 mg. I am able to go on...
...

GrandmaIsGod says "Trazodone Puts you to Sleep and gives You Nightmares!!!!!!!!!" about trazodone Insomnia Medication

Trazodone is very good for putting you to sleep and you don't usually really need very much to let it help you. Trazodone is generally given to people for depression. I currently have a problem with depression and was given other medication but then I was also having problems sleeping so my Doctor prescribe Trazodone to help me sleep. Unfortunately while it worked great it also gave me horrible nightmares.

At first I did not know what was causing the nightmares because generally I do not even remember my dreams then when I did not take the Trazodone for several days the nightmares went away. I tried reducing the dosage but that did not help. The only time that it even remotely works without giving me nightmares is when I cut the pill in fourths and then I have a 50-50 chance of not having nightmares.

In addition to that, it also clogged my nose and made it very hard to breath at night. I even tried taking Benadryl to help this but it did not work.

I would recommend that...
...

I have been using Ambien for the past two weeks and its probably one of the worst decisions I have ever made. My insurance carrier was switched at work (HAP over Blue Cross). I used to take Lunesta due to severe insomnia. HAP doesn't cover Lunesta so my doctor prescribed me Ambien. BIG MISTAKE. After taking the first pill I woke up in the morning with the worst headache. My neck was so sore and I could barely function. The headache lasted all day. The so called "sleep specialists" have advised me that I have to give up one thing so I could gain another. Basically, I have to give up pain free living so that I can get 5-6 hours of sleep. The Lunesta did not make me choose between the aforementioned. The pain has only gotten worse and am constantly using an ice pack on the back of my head in order to get some minor relief. In conclusion, Ambien is horrible for your body. I will no longer be taking it and will find alternative assistance with sleeping.
...

jweaver1982 says "Help fight derpression, anxiety,& sleep disorders with Trazodone." about trazodone Insomnia Medication

Trazodone is used to treat depression and may also be used for relief of an anxiety disorder (eg, sleeplessness, tension), chronic pain. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor. Trazodone is an antidepressant and it is thought to increase the activity of one of the brain chemicals (serotonin), which helps elevate mood. You should not use Trazodone if:

you are allergic to any ingredient in Trazodone or nefazodone

you are taking sodium oxybate (GHB)

You should contact your health care provider or your doctor if this applies to you.

Before taking Trazodone some medical conditions may interact with Trazodone. Be sure to tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any of these medical conditions:

if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding

if you are taking any prescription or non pescription medicines, herbal preperation, or dietary supplements.

if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or any other substances

gaelforce says "Something To Help You Sleep." about Triazolam Halcion

If you have had trouble sleepine for over six months, this could be the solution. Have you tried Herbal Remedies? OTC Medication? Hypnosis? Other prescriptions? Halcion could help you.

It's a tablet and you take it orally at bedtime. You will fall asleep quickly - take it when you are ready for bed and go to bed right away. You will not only fall asleep, you will sleep through the night and will wake up refreshed. It's wonderful to finally find something that works.

Your doctor will probably prescribe it on a month to minth basis. Talk to your doctor at least every three months to discuss your progress.

Like any prescription medication, there is the possibility of abuse. Be sure to take the medication when and how often you take it exactly as your doctor prescribes it. It's safer than other sleep medications I have taken but you have to be careful. In my case, there have been no problems with interaction with other prescription or OTC products. As always if you experience any problems...
...

gaelforce says "Ambien Is Not For Everybody." about Zolpidem Ambien

I have read many reviews - several were written on this site - touting Ambien and I'm sure they were all authentic but my experience was completely different.

I have had insomnia for at least twenty-five years. I have tried over the counter sleep aids, herbal and mineral remedies, accupuncture, hypnosis and other prescription medications. Nothing worked for any length of time. Finally my family physician prescribed Ambien.

At first Ambien was a dream come true. I went to sleep quickly, slept through the night and woke up refreshed with no "drug hangover". What a relief!

But then strange things began to happen. Friends would tell me that I had had long, rambling conversations with them. I didn't remember any of them.

I would wake up and there would be food on the counter that I didn't remember preparing or eating.

The last straw was waking up in my Chevy Blazer and had crashed into a tree in my driveway. I didn't have any memory of getting dressed, starting the Blazer, I had no idea where...
...

I have been battling with insomnia and hypomania since I was a child. When you don't sleep, it worsens your depression, diminishes you capacity to think, digest food, and makes the cycle of bipolar disorder or cyclothymic disorder even worse. I was prescribed all of these awful mood stabalizers that make you nasty, mean, and honery in many cases. I have heard the same from a few others I know in my situation. I don't truly get full blown manias, so if I can get slowed down enough to the point where I get to sleep and stay asleep, I am golden. I am feeling so much better! I definitely suggest it. I took Lunesta for a few years, and it just wasn't the same. It put me to sleep, but four hours later I would be up and lacking yet again. You will be amazed how much a couple extra, well, regular hours for everyone else, will recharge you, and how optimally you will be able to function. I feel so much better. It also helps seratonin levels in people with depression, sleep,...
...

I was on Ambien for over a year. I had a lot of great sleep, but embarassed myself like crazy. Every night I'd take it, then the room would start to spin, I'd lose all self-control and say the stupidest things, and run around the halls (I live in a dorm). I would forget what I'd done, only to hear it through the grapevine later on. I'd get great dreamless sleep, but I noticed I'd be slightly tired throughout the day. I heard that Ambien would slow down my metabolism, but I didn't notice any difference. However, when I went off of Ambien (because I'd embarassed myself too much), I couldn't fall asleep until it was almost sunrise. I was completely dependent on it, and couldn't sleep without it. I tried Rozerem, which didn't make me fall asleep. Now I take melatonin most nights and it really helps (and I don't need it all the time!) Overall, Ambien works for sleep, but the side effects aren't worth it.
...

I try not to have to take tons of medications, so when my doctor wanted to prescribe Trazodone to me, I was hesitant. He felt that myanxiety, mild depression and high stress levels were to blame for my inability to sleep through the night (an occassional full-blown insomnia), and after some disussion on the risks and benefits I agreed to give it a try.

I'm amazed and grateful for what this medication has done; finally, I can get a good nights sleep! I don't take it every day, just once or twice a week, but even that infrequent usage has greatly improved my rest. When I take it I don't wake up throughout the night, letting the worries of my day destroy my rest; instead I sleep and wake up feeling like a new person. I would recommend this medication to anyone who, like me, just has trouble staying asleep.

So far, I have not noticed any adverse effects from taking Trazodone. It has been nothing but a wonderful sleep aid for me.
...

I've never slept well my entire life. A propensity to night terrors, sleepwalking, and general restless combined with some painful chronic health conditions makes it hard to fall asleep and hard to stay asleep. I was desperate until I was prescribed Ambien. It was quite a regular thing for me to be up for three days at a time.

Ambien is designed to be a sleeping pill by operating as a hypnotic on your system. I don't understand all the mechanics of it, but essentially it can relax your body and mind to help you sleep. But if you read any news, you've probably read about the strange side effects. It causes some pretty severe memory fog or complete amnesia. There's a good chance you won't remember anything after it kicks in until you've slept it off. And I personally have an occasional night where it almost seems to make me more hyper and awake than sleepy.

This is definitely one to consult your doctor about. But if you've tried everything else it may be the solution for...
...

Ambien is a prescription drug that helps you fall asleep if you have insomnia or trouble falling asllep for more than 3 days. If you take the medicine as perscribed it works very well, you fall asleep within fifteen to thirty minutes of taking it, but you have to make sure that you are able to get at least eight hours of sleep. When you wake up you do not feel drowsy or have any effect from the drug. If you take more than prescribed it get result in you sleep walking and while sleep walking you may do things that you will not remember doing the next day. I have taken more than prescribed and have been told that I was sleep walking and have made breakfast at two thirty in the morning, I have rearranged cupboards and not remembered, also I have had my keys in my hand to go and get in my car to drive somewhere. Luckily I have been stopped when I have tried to drive a car. There have been reports of people getting into accidents because of being a sleep when they attempted to drive...
...

I was skeptical about using a sleep aid as I had heard that one of the side effects was a sluggish feeling the next day. My doctor suggested I try Ambien as I was having difficulty sleeping as a result of my Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. I began using it occassionally as I did not want to become dependent. However, I would never kow for sure when I would need it--as you are supposed to allow at leat 7 - 8 hours of sleep time in order for it to be most effective. If you can't sleep at least that amount of time, it doesn't help to take it at midnight if you have to be up by 5:00 am! So, then I began taking it every night--I have gone off of it for a couple days at a time and have found no ill effects (i.e., still able to sleep even when I don't take it). I would recommend Ambien to anyone and everyone who is experiencing any type of sleeping problems. I do not have a dry mouth or any other type of adverse reactions. I think it is a great prescription and has my full recommendation!...
...

Ambien CR is a prescription medication for insomnia. It requires a doctor's prescription.

It is the best sleeping medication I have tried. It has allowed me to fall asleep quickly, and sleep soundly for at least six hours.

I have tried the generic form of this medication (zolpidem) and it is inferior to Ambien CR. It has helped me fall asleep, but wake up in the middle of the night and can't fall back to sleep. Very awkward if you need to get a good night's sleep!

Ambien CR is not covered by my insurance, so it is much more expensive to get at the pharmacy than to get the generic form with just a co-pay. So, I get a prescription for the generic which I use on a more regular basis, but have the CR prescription filled and use for special nights when I really need to get that great night's sleep.

My sleep trouble is because I can't seem to shut my thinking/worrying when I want to sleep...and Ambien CR really helps.

I have a horrible time sleeping, so I took Ambien. I started to mysteriously gain weight. It was because I was "sleep eating." Not a few cookies or some candy. How about an entire rotisserie chicken and a cherry pie? I was eating SO much food! I was eating more than I even thought could fit in my stomach. How was I not vomiting? I didn't figure it out until I woke up with pie all over my night shirt. I had just assumed the other residents of the house were eating the food. I had total amnesia for the event. I had conversations and wrote emails while sleeping. No memory.

Then one night I was jarred awake by my frantic husband. "You drove to the grocery store! You went shopping! I couldn't find you!" Well the groceries were on the kitchen table, but I didn't remember buying them. Wow. I don't know what my driving skills were like, but I have news... the Law doesn't care because driving on Ambien is still a DUI.

I use Trazodone every night to help me fall asleep. I take anti-depressants which gave me insomnia, and then my doctor prescribed Trazodone. I just take a low amount - half a pill - every night, and it really helps me fall asleep. No more anxious thoughts running through my head and keeping me awake. I also like it because I know if I take it, I will sleep through the night. I don't experience any kind of hangover effect with it at all. It's a cheap medication, too, so even if you don't have insurance, you can afford it. I think it's like $7.00 a month. I also have a health plan where I can order three months' worth at a time, which also cuts down on the cost. I used to lie awake at night, tossing and turning, and waking up at every sound. Now I sleep peacefully, and it really makes a difference during my day. I am much more productive with a good night's sleep. I have also been able to wean myself down to a lower dose - I started at a higher dose. To be able...
...

I have taken ambien for over 8 years now and it is a godsend. I love this stuff.some people get a buzz from it. I dont get a buzz at all, but i do fall asleep super fast and i sleep a good eight hours with ambien. i wake up and feel refreshed like i had a great 8 hour sleep. i am not groggy or grumpy. i do get amnesia like most other people that take this. i just forget the last hour before i fall asleep.if something comes up i will remember everything that happened.some mornings i also wake up and dont remember anything from the morning. but this is so much better than having to take tylenol pm or having to take bennedryl or something.I know that some people say you should never take more than a few months of ambien, but for me I take it every night, and my doctor says its fine because i have insomnia. i am not addicted, if i dont take it, i dont have withdrawls. i just dont sleep. and that is never fun! :) I hope that anyone having issues sleeping should try this.
...

I often use the prescription medication Ambien (generic name is zolpidem). It is available as a regular release tablet in 5mg or 10mg, and also as a controlled release tablet in 6.25mg or 12.5mg strength. Without a sleep aid, I toss and turn all night long, and my sleep is shallow and unrestful. This one is great because it works really quickly. You take it right before you lay down to go to sleep. If you take it before you are ready to go to sleep and wander around for awhile (half hour or more) it seems not to work as well. The controlled release lasts all thru the night, but is only available as a brand name, and is therefore expensive. I take a half of the 10mg tablet and split it in half. I take half right before bed, and then if I wake up in the middle of the night (usually around 2 or 3 am) I take the other half. The only complaint that I have with the medication is that I sometimes have a slight headache in the morning. There is no groggy feeling, but sometimes...
...

adria says "I became addicted to them" about Ambien Zolpidem Tartrate Medication

My doctor prescribed these to help me sleep. I was on the minimum dosage. I got addicted to them after about a month. They only helped me sleep for about 4 hours then I would wake up and couldn't go back to sleep. Sometimes I felt groggy the next day. I got to the point where I had to have these to go to sleep at all. They give you this funny high feeling that makes you sleepy. It's so easy to get addicted to these. I quit taking them because I finally realized I was addicted. It was hard. I doubt I'll ever want to take these again because I don't want to get hooked on them again. Over the counter stuff is what I take now or I just stay up super late til I can't stay up anymore....

My doctor prescribed ambien (zolpidem for generic) as I developed insomnia after a year of have my son. I have always been a very active, healthy. About a year in I started developing neck pain. Thought nothing of it. I thought it was from stress or the fact that I'm not getting any younger......2 years passed and the pain was getting extreme. I was having cervial injections, several addictive narcotics prescribed to me, even trips to the E.R!!!!!! This pain made me so depressed and I knew that I needed to stop taking all the pain meds. So after 3 years of chronic pain my husband and I wanted to start for another child. I thought it was crazzzzy at the time because of my pain. But instead it was a blessing. My O.B. instructed to discontinue the ambien, but I could take vicodin as needed, which I did. It wasn't until about 3 days of stopping the Ambiem that I was almost pain-free!!! Could it be?? I couldn't belive it! Sure enough a week went by and I could get out of...
...
