I have been battling migraine headaches for a majority of my life and couldn't seem to find a profilactic that actually worked. I was prescribed Topamax by my neurologist after several trials of other medications that were costly and makes you prone to addiction. I used it for about a year and found that it worked for me cutting down my weekly migraines from an average of 6 a week to 1! It is expensive if you do or don't have insurance, but most doctors that prescribe it will give you samples along with coupons to help take the load off your pockets. It can also make you very tired so ask your doctor about dosing together instead of twice a day, I did and it worked just as well.
...

This medication DID eventually help with the miagrains, and I lost about 20lbs. BUT I started loosing congnitive skills. I lost my ability to process thoughts, complete sentences, spell simple words and was even being lost in the place I lived for 35 years. These conditions continued to worsen. It was very scarey. My mind was so cloudy all the time. The Dr. thought I was possibilily having a break down due to stress. I was put in a crisis hospital for mental evaluation. At this same time I had been battling continual Uninary Tract Infections. The Dr. there immediately took me off of this drug and almost immediately the symptoms started going awayl! I was told this is a VERY common side effect and eventually I would probably have had kidney stones also. It was a HORRIBLE experience! Yes, I have a fear of what's going to happen if and when the mairgrains re-appear, I hope by there's another drug that can help because I was non-functioning on this one!
...

gaelforce says "Depakote Helps But Beware Of The Side Effects." about Depakote Depakote.

Depakote - divalproex sodium - is taken orally in tablet form once a day. You must swallow this tablet whole - never crush it.

My doactor prescribed it for migraine prevention, pain relief if I get a migraine anyway and because she thought it would help me sleep. It took a while to get into my system - Depakote is not a fast acting drug. After four weeks I was feeling markedly better. I was getting fewer migraines even though they were as painful as ever when I did get them. I was much calmer. I have taken Depakote for 18 months and I have not experienced any side effects. It really worked well for me.

But as I looked at the enclosure that every pharmacy is required to provide, I found that there were many side effects - some minor but some very serious.

The minor side effects include nausea, vomiting, dizziness and an increased appetite.

The major side effects include liver damage and severe damage to your pancreas. If you are pregnant tell your doctor because it would be dangerous. Tell...
...

mypunto2009 says "Very expensive and very effective Zomig" about Zomig zomig

I started to takethis medicine when my doctor suggested it , he did give sample at first , I would say this medication very strong at first , it has side effects though that I don't liek which is being dizzy and sleepy aside fromt that i feel wierd , al I want to do is laydown. And here is the upside of the Zomig 5mg it works so fast but my headach stblish already I have to take a second one after two hours or so just to finish the job on treating me. But when I take this one when my migraine just started it works in a heartbet. One thing I would reccommend on this one is to get that 2.5 mg atleast it is much cheaper and the side effects it is not terribly bad and still works as the other one. I can feel numbness also when I take this one but nothing to worry about is just few minutes that's it. Zomig very powerful drug that would defeat my or anybody's headache , And this one is the brandname which is more better , no generic for this.
...

Deeceeba says "migraine pain for me relpax takes the lead" about Relpax

For all you migraine headache people out there, i think you will agree that this is the worse kind of headache there is.

Now i have had them since i was a teenager, and i guess it runs in the family because my Dad is still getting them.

But now there is a good medication that works for me and that is relpax. Now this drug has not been out there too many years so i have tried many other medications for my headaches.

Before any of these migraine medications came out there was not much you could do for it but go to bed and try to sleep it off and that always does not work.

so when they got so bad i was put on pain medication and that worked for awhile until i got use to it then it didn't want to work anymore so then tried another kind and that too helped for awhile but you could hardly go to work when i was like that.

Then i tried other migraine medications which did not work to good, that is until relpax came out on the market.

and when i started taking it i could really tell right away...
...

mmc80 says "Imitrex has changed my life" about Imitrex

I have suffered from debilitating migraine headaches for many years. In the past I was unable to take most medications because the migraines make me nauseous. Imitrex has changed my life. I used to have to go to a dark quiet room , take medicine and try to sleep off the headache. Immitrex works more quickly if I lie down, but it is not necessary if it doesn't work after the first dose, you can take another dose. Ibuprofen may also be taken along with Imitrex. I used to lose days out of my life because of migraine headaches, now usually in about twenty minutes I am ready to face the day. Immitrex also is available in a generic form and I have not found any difference between the generic and name brand. Imitrex may also be taken by injection, but my physician recommended that the first dose be given in the doctor's office in case the blood pressure dropped which could cause fainting or any other side effects. The oral prescription works great for me with no side effects....
...

Both my mother and I had terrible side effects from this drug and later read in the materials that this should first be taken in your doctor's office in case of dangerous side effects. My mother and I both had a horrible burning sensation in our brains (she went to the ER) and I have had terrible joint pain all over for an hour after I take it. Despite the awful side effects it does work for me about half the time. Imitrex I have been told is highly recommended because it does work quickly for most people. Even with my health insurance it costs about $20 per pill and I am only allowed 6 per month which doesn't help when you have double that number every month.
...

I am a long time Migraine Sufferer and was recently started on Topamax for two reasons, one for the migraines and two to possibly help with weight loss. I am currently at 250mg and will be up to 300mg by next week, not sure if I will be going up much more from that. It has definitely helped with the migraines which I am thankful for. I used to have between 4-5 a month now maybe 1-2 a month if that. The side effects are something else but due to me being on so many medications from all of my other health issues they don't bother me that bad. I no longer drink soda, but if I wanted too the taste is just Gawd awful. I have tingling in my feet intermittently and I have fatigue. All and all I really can't complain.
...

Sammyantha81 says "Migraine Pain and Burning" about Imitrex

I have started suffering from migraines again after years without one. I have been getting cluster headaches, one to two a week. It is hell! After the first week of multiple migraines, I was prescribed Imitrex. Not only did it not help my migraines, it added a burning sensation in addition to the migraine symptoms of light-sensitivity, nausea, and extreme headache on one side of my head and one eye.

Oh boy! Now I have to deal with another symptom rather than getting rid of the ones I am trying to treat. Of course it may differ for you, I can only speak from experience (obviously) and I am not a qualified physician. You may want to research this medicatoin and of course consult your physician to decide what is best for you. The only thing I can say, with certainty, is that Imitrex does not work for me!

The burning sensation was internal and on the same side as my migraine and it just seemed to make the situation more unbearable.
...

Suffering from migraines for over 15 years, I had given up hope for help. I would go into my doctor to come out with the same old thing....there really isn't anything we can do. Well that all stopped when my current nurse practioner wrote me a rx for relpax. All I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you. Relpax is a miracle when it comes to migraines. I had such bad migraines that I would vomit and have to be in bed for a day or two. I could count on them once a month. Relpax has stopped that. I take one pill when I notice the signs of a migraine and usually within a few minutes (sometimes up to a half an hour) the symptoms disappear. I can go about my normal day doing my normal activities. My rx is for 12 tablets and it usually lasts me for 3 months. I would say I depend on relpax for relief. I don't have any side effects either and usually I only need to take one a day (usually 2 a migraine cycle) which knocks it out.
...

ZOmig this medicine works so very well in my migraine headaches in about 30 minutes. I have insurance which pay for this so I had to pay nine dollars for this. It is available in 2 dosage all works good. I've been using it for four years now ,my doctor reccomend it then I tried it and amazing I get rid ofmy headache faster than I can think of. Comparing with other brand like Imitrex ,this Zomig works a million times better, besides that ithelp me relax as well eventhough it makes you want to sleep. For me this is a magic pill I couldn't compare any medicine that work as best or better than this. Aside from that the company making Zomig giving you promotion which is I got it from their website and also give you more information about this medicine that helps you convince to switch to this from any other migraine headaches medicine. I would give an A+ to this ,a quick relief and will not intervene your activities .
...

If you wake in the night with leg cramps or wake feeling as if you never slept at all, then you mght want to read this. I suffered through endless nights of leg cramps that left me feeling as if I would have been better off staying awake at night. The wear and tear on my body effected both my physical attivities and my thinking ability. Both of these are very important to any daily routine.

I talked with my Doctor about my condition and she said she had just what I needed. Having heard this for years from other Doctors, i was a little skeptical. She gave me a small prescription for Pfizer Neurontin, a medication used to treat Restless Leg Syndrome. Restless Leg Syndrome is a disorder related to sensation and movement. People with restless legs syndrome have an unpleasant feeling or sensation in their legs when they lie down to sleep. Most people also have a very strong urge to move their legs, and moving the legs sometimes makes them feel better. But all this movement makes it hard...
...

My specialist prescribed Topamax for me after I had tried several other prescription drugs with no success. I had been suffering from migraines for several months and have tried home remedies, over-the-counter medicines, etc. And also listened to advice from other people that I know had the same problem. After taking the prescription medication Topamax for a few weeks, I had noticed an improvement over the number of occurences I was having a migraine. It went from one to two a week down to none with the use of the medication. But after taking it a few weeks I started suffering with an upset stomach. It got so bad that I started feeling sick to my stomach everyday with no relief. I went back to my doctor to see what was causing me the problem. Unfortunately for me, I was having a side effect from the medication and it was so bad for me that I had to stop taking the Topamax. I was disappointed but I knew it was either deal with an occasional migraine or have stomach pain every day. I couldn't......

Neurontin is an anti-seizure medication that is also used for neuralgia or nerve pain. It has other uses but those are the most common. It is widely used by physicians for treatment of nerve disorders caused by diabetes, post herpatic neuralgia - the after shock pain of shingles, and for many nerve disorders. It was orginally developed as an anti-seizure medication but as with many medications other uses were soon discovered. I took neurontin for 3 years for trigeminal neuralgia which is a very painful facial nerve disorder. It worked well for me but the dosage can increase to many capsules per day that become frustrating to take. I also found that it made me extremly hungry and I've lost 38 pounds since I stopped taking it a year ago. ...

TxasMom says "Imitrex works great." about Imitrex

Imitrex works great for migraines and auras. The only exception is the pain in my jaws after about 10 mins of taking the medicine. I can deal with that pain because it goes away about the same time the migraine does. The nasal spray works great too, just is bad tasting. I would only recommend the spray if you were out on the go and could not lay down to get rid of the migraine, because the tastes lasts for a while. I would normally get a chocolate bar and eat it slowly to help drown out the taste. I recommend Imitrex to anyone suffering from auras and/or migraines....

TxasMom says "Better than Imitrex for my migraines and auras." about Topamax

My doc recommended Topamax to me to get rid of the follow-up headaches that I normally get after the migraine attacks. It seems to be working well so far and I do not get the pain in my jaws, that lasts for 30 mins., like after taking an Imitrex. It also works for the auras I get often. Normally with Imitrex I would have to take a tylenol or two afterwards to get a hold of the headaches that follow the migraine. Now only one or two of Topamax and shortly the migraine is gone!...

nightengale36 says "Relpax takes away my migraine with no rebound later in the day." about Relpax

I have suffered from migraines for many years, and been on several different medications for them. I was on Imitrex for quite a bit of that time, and then it started not working for me. I would get "rebound" headaches a few hours or later in the day after I took the medication. At that time I was still working as a nurse, so this was not something that was good for me, so my neurologist started me on Relpax. It is the same type of medicine as Imitrex, but works better for me. It maybe takes a little bit longer to start working (maybe anywhere from 30min.-1 hour, depending on how soon I take one when I feel the headache coming on), but the headaches do not come back, so to me that is better. And, I do not feel any chest pain or tightness like I usually did with Imitrex.

So, for me, Relpax has been a much better choice to help when I get a migraine.
...
