I have already reviewed Diovan, the other medication I take to alleviate and control high blood pressure. Another drug I take is Atenolol which is the common name for Tenormin manufactured by Astra-Zeneca. This medicine is in the form of a pill which is taken once a day. I can buy a 90-day supply from CVS Caremark Prescription Plan mail order service for only $10 (or a little more than $3 a month).

Atenolol is a beta-blocker which works by blocking the action of certain natural chemicals in your body such as epinephrine on the heart and blood vessels, thereby having a beneficial effect on blood pressure. This medicine should be taken only if prescribed by a physician who knows your medical history and also what other medications you are taking. If you are pregnant, Atenolol should be taken only if really needed and after discussion with your doctor.

Certain side effects may occur, such as dizziness, lightheadedness, and drowsiness. Atenolol may also reduce circulation to your...
...

AnnaBanana says "Does the job but not a casual medication." about Diovan Oral Blood Pressure Medicine

As most of you may have guessed by now, I really like to eat. In fact, I spent decades eating a lot of the wrong things and salting them liberally so it is not surprising that I have been coping with high blood pressure for a long time. I have made a lot of changes in my diet and general lifestyle plan and this has helped but also of vital importance are the medications I take to alleviate my symptoms. One of the most important of these is Diovan manufactured by Novartis Pharmaceuticals.

Diovan is the brand name for Valsartan which belongs to a class of drugs called angiotensin receptor blockers which means that it works by blocking the hormone angiotensin thereby relaxing the blood vessels and causing them to widen.

When I buy Diovan from Caremark CVS Prescription Insurance mail order service, it costs $20 a month (90-day supply). The pill is easy to take and mine only requires one dose a day. This is not a casual medication, however, and should be taken only under the supervision...
...

dmdifalco says "Hydrochlorot Combats Hypertension & Water Retension" about Hydrochlorothiazide Hydrochlorot

My physician is notorious for finding prescriptions which can combat more than one problem at a time. Hydrochlorot is one such medication. Not only is it effective for hypertension but it also helps remove water and salt from your body which accumulates because of high blood pressure. There was one occasion a few years ago where I woke up and my feet and ankles were swollen. When I went in to see my family doctor and he noted that my blood pressure was also running high...he prescribed me with hydrochlorot. Mind you, I was to take this along with the prescription blood pressure that I was already on. It was a relatively low dosage, just enough for me to pass the water. Trust me, you'll spend a good part of your day in the bathroom. Within a few days the swelling around my ankles and feet was completely gone. Because my pressure tends to run high there was no fear of it becoming too low. The doctor advised me to keep this prescription on hand just in case my feet...
...

My doctor and I went through many months of trial and err trying to combat my problem with high blood pressure. It runs in our family and I seem to have inherited this. After trying various medications my doctor concluded that the pain I was experiencing on a daily basis due to a spinal disorder was causing my pressure to remain high. One time when I went into his office, my pressure reading was 280 over 120. It was than he asked me to take a sample of Lotrel right than. He said we would wait about 15 minutes to see what happened and that if the blood pressure did not come down...he would immediately send me to the hospital. Thank God, the medication worked substantially. The next reading was 135 over 90. Because it was that high, I had to report to him every few days so that he could keep tabs on if they Lotrel continued to work. High Blood pressure is nothing to play around with. You could have a stroke or heart attack. Also with this prescription medication, one...
...

TimothyL says "Atenolol is effective in maintaining blood pressure." about Tenormin Atenolol 50mg

Atenolol (generic: Tenormin) is a medication that is used for blood pressure as well as heart rate. As a chronic pain sufferer, my pain is responsible for raising my blood pressure and heart rate. My doctor decided to treat the symptom (the blood pressure) rather than concentrating on the cause (the pain) and prescribed me atenolol.

Although it is a common side effect, I didn't experience dizziness or light headedness with it; nor did I experience nausea or any GI side effects (mainly because I always take my medications with food to lessen the chance of that). My main side effect was lethargy / tiredness that went away within a week of starting the medication (either at the beginning or whenever the dose was increased). However, it doesn't work miracles as when my pain increases, my blood pressure and heart rate increase beyond what the medication can take care of. When both my pain relievers and atenolol work in tandem, my blood pressure and heart rate are controlled.

TimothyL says "Metoprolol works effectively but lethargy is common." about Lopressor Metoprolol 25mg

Metoprolol (generic: Lopressor) is a medication that is primarily used for high blood pressure. My mother, who had a heart attack, had been prescribed the medication post-op in conjunction with lisinopril (and other medications which she has since discontinued), which brought up the question to me, why so many medications for "just high blood pressure"? The doctor informed us that instead of the highest strength of one medication, low doses of multiple medications work better. But with metoprolol, the main side effect she experienced was lethargy / tiredness.

From 50mg to 25mg and now at 12.5mg, metoprolol is effective in maintaining normal blood pressure. With decreased doses, the lethargy disappears and becomes more tolerable. The only difficulty is that the lowest tablet available is 25mg, and the tablet is very tiny to cut, which makes for the average 12.5mg but could be off by a milligram or so. Dosed at twice a day, and relatively less expensive than its brand name or...
...

AnnaBanana says "It makes a difference!" about Maxzide Diuretic

First, I must admit that I have always loved salt and really respect people who don't feel the same way I do about it. The fact is that over the years one of the good things I have done for myself was to drastically reduce the amount of salt I consume but I just can't get used to unsalted potato chips, crackers, cheese or even unsalted butter or margarine which earns from me a resounding YECH! It was loving salt -- as much as the luscious food that it was sprinkled on -- which contributed to my weight problem over the years. When I first began to cut back on salt, I know it sounds crazy but there were times when I would have almost traded the food for the salt and just eaten the salt alone.

To make a long story short, water retention became a fact of life for me eventually and -- even though I am avidly consuming a better diet today -- Dr. Forbes has prescribed for me Maxzide, which is a combination of two diuretics: Hydrochlorothiazide and Triamterene, both of which are designed...
...

I am a 46 year old woman, who is also a working full time nurse. I have been using HCTZ for about two years now, and it has kept my blood pressure under control quite nicely. It does work like a diuretic, though, which in laymans terms means you will urinate frequently daily. I suggest taking the medication as early as possible in the day so as not to interrupt your nightly sleep. ( If working the night shift, I found that supper time was the best time to take it). HCTZ does have another side effect besides the frequent urination: dizziness. I have found that sometimes moving too quickly will cause a quick burst of dizziness's or even a light-headed feeling. Also what is known as orthostatic hypotension can become a problem. This is a sudden drop in blood pressure when going from laying to sitting to standing, causing light-headedness. I have taken 25mg of this medication in the past, but through diet and exercise am now taking 12.5mg once a day. I would recommend...
...

My blood pressure was always good, but it seemed that as soon as I turned 30 it started gradually begain getting higher. After a few years, my doctor prescribed Toprol XL, a blood pressure medication that you take once daily.

Toprol is prescribed to treat Angina (chest pain) and hypertension (high blood pressure). It may also be used to treat or prevent heart attack. Toprol is in a group of drugs called beta-blockers. Beta-blockers effect the heart and circulation.

After I began taking Toprol, it took about two or three months before my blood pressure became regulated. Since that time, it has remained lower and has been consistently improved. It's a relief to know that there is a medication out there that can treat such a dangerous condition. I have never had any ill effects from taking the medicine. My husband was also prescribed this medication soon after he suffered a mild heart attack several years ago. He has also had excellent results, and has had no side effects...
...

I have medical issues including high blood pressure. My doctor has tried me on several HBP medications and this one seems to be the only one that hasn't given me any problems and that I can easily take in the dosage I need.

My doctor had me on a brand name version of a similar drug and cost was becoming a real factor. So, I told him about it and he took me seriously and changed me over to this medication, since he felt it would work just as well and the cost would come down for me.

I do have prescription insurance, but I still have copays to meet, so I was pleased to find that this medication is available - especially in a generic. It does keep my HBP in check and I only have to take it once daily.
...
