Following some major heart surgery eight years ago, my cardiologist prescribed Zocor to control my high cholesterol. I started taking it (40mg) and predictably my cholesterol levels plummeted. So did my triglycerides. And to complete the tri-fecta, my good cholesterol was boosted nicely. — The monthly cost for this medication? Well at the time it was about $165/month. Ouch! — Life Plays Cruel Jokes — I was pretty young to need a complete overhaul of all of my coronary arteries. But, my cardiologist, after performing an angiogram said that there wasn't an artery left that wasn't seriously blocked. He said that cholesterol had left so much plaque in my arteries that surgery was my only alternative and that afterward I'd be given drugs to control my cholesterol. — The funny thing was that all my life I was attentive to heart health. Most of my male uncles died in their 40's from heart disease. Knowing...

RudiXeno says "Vytorin: You did see this coming didn't you?" about Vytorin

I've taken cholesterol lowering medication for years, Zocor to be specific. So, imagine my delight when last year, June I think, Merck's patent on this medication expired. Suddenly, the 40mg dose I was taking would no longer cost almost $150 a month, but rather the lowly sum of $4. Generics were available. — Oddly enough the manufacturer of the first generic was in fact Merck! Seems they could sell this stuff for almost 40 times less and still make a profit. (Picture in your mind a crack dealer wearing a suit). — Ah, but in the wings, Merck was in partnership to produce a new and improved medication, Vytorin, a combination of Zocor and Zetia. Patent protected, interestingly it was going to cost about $150 a month. — Suddenly, the TV was broadcasting the merits of this new wonder drug. It not only protected you from the cholesterol in your diet but the cholesterol you inherited from your no good relatives. I'm sure you saw these commercials. Something seemed...

It did make my readings better mainly increased my good cholesteral.....But watching what I ate had the same affect....quit the drug took nothing and my numbers were basically the same. It is the niacin in here that is evil..Dont take this...

katrinka says "Beware of side effects for some people w/Lipitor" about Lipitor Atorvastatin Calcium

Lipitor does bring your cholestrol down! I took Lipitor for years until I started to have one of those "rare but serious side effects." I started to lose strength in my right arm and pain shot through the muscle in my fore arm when I tried to lift anything ~ my purse, dishes, etc. Then the pain started in my left ankle. My Dr changed my prescription to a cholestrol lowering drug that did not have those "rare but serious side effects" and the symptoms gradually vanished and I slowly regained use of my right arm and can now walk without a limp. Lipitor does work, it worked for me for yeears, but do be aware of the side...

TurningIn2myMOM says "Trusting my doctor I should be on this" about Crestor

My doctors were not concerned about my cholesterol when I was 26, 125 pounds and it was over 300 points. Now that I'm a little older they are all concerned and have tried me on several medications to lower it. Last count was 185 or so, but I gues that isn't as good as they would like it. I do not like taking medicine, and I think it is this Crestor that has my legs hurting at night. Doctor has added Zetia to the pile of pills he wants me on, also. With heart disease in the family, I don't see how a pill can stop what is going to happen because of my blood line anyhow. —...

Jo says "Lipitor brought my cholesterol down to an acceptable number. " about Lipitor Atorvastatin Calcium

To the Point — Imagine my surprise when I was told several years ago that I had high cholesterol. Given how I ate and eat (most of the time) and my exercise regiment I thought it impossible. — Please find out your family history! I didn’t know it at the time but both my mom and aunt have high cholesterol. It runs in my family. I was put on Lipitor and have been on it since. — A Closer View — The first number I was given was around 275! It went down in a year but my good cholesterol was still going in the wrong direction and my bad cholesterol was also going in the wrong direction. Finally after perhaps two years my cholesterol – good and bad- is fine and around 175. My doctor is very pleased and so am I. — From www.lipitor.com “Before taking any medicine, it's good to know how it works. LIPITOR lowers cholesterol in your body. LIPITOR lowers it by blocking an enzyme in the liver. Your body uses this enzyme...
