ApriBambino says "Not quite homemade but not bad for a canned soup." about muir glen Classic Minestrone Soup

Muir Glen Classic Minestrone Soup

I like making soup, a lot, but when I don't have the time I'll give in and use a canned soup even though I'm not a huge fan.

Having a coupon for Muir Glen soup, I decided to get a few cans to have on hand. I chose the Classic Minestrone as it's one of our favorites anytime. Well, the other night I simply didn't feel like fussing over dinner so I opened a 19 ounce can of Muir Glen Classic Minestrone Soup. I like the fact that It has an easy-open pull top tab so, no can opener necessary.

As for the tomato-based soup, it's quite full of all the ingredients you'd expect in a minestrone which include Carrots, Tomatoes, Garbanzo (or chickpea) Beans, Spinach, Potatoes, Green Beans, Light Red Kidney Beans, Peas, Diced Celery and Penne Pasta. It's seasoned with onion, oregano, basil, sea salt, black pepper, thyme and rosemary.

Flavor wise, this soup is good, the balance of herby flavors is pleasant and it's not overly salted. The tomato flavor is fresh and...
...

I suggest you buy a can and place it in your fridge and let it get cold and try it out. Del Monte has so many products fruit wise, Cans, Cups, freezable items and they all taste great!!
...

ElizabethAnnR says "Campbells Cream of Mushroom Soup stretches your dollar." about Campbells Cream of Mushroom Soup

Campbells Cream of Mushroom Soup helped extend my available cash when my children were young. We were living on a limited budget so I had to prepare meals that cost little to prepare.

The most common recipe used was Campbells Cream of Mushroom Soup with tuna served on toast or rice. It was very simple. Now I would be more inclined to add a few herbs or spices to make it a bit more flavorful. I like my food to be a bit on the hot side and might like to add a little cayenne pepper. That, however, could be left to each person.

I also used Campbells Cream of Mushroom Soup over a steak. Brown the steak then place in a shallow casserole dish and pour Campbells Cream of Mushroom Soup over the steak. Cook the steak until fork tender. It is rather good.

Campbells Cream of Mushroom Soup is also very good for making Swedish meatballs. At least one version. Prepare the meatballs then pour Campbells Cream of Mushroom Soup over them. Then keep in a warm dish.

There I was the other day, rudely shoving the last leftovers from Thanksgiving around, when to my horror I discovered MORE leftovers in my freezer compartment. Apparently the last time I had bought a roast chicken from Dominick's, I had not finished it and just stuffed what was left in the freezer for "later." Now here I was, with some leftover chicken and also -- as fate would have it -- most of the Del Monte convenience cut onions and celery (which I had used for my stuffing), a half a pound of baby carrots, a half a bag of egg noodles and -- most importantly -- almost an entire 32 oz. carton of Progresso 100% Natural Reduced Sodium Chicken Broth. If ever there was a time to make Chicken Noodle Soup, this was it but first I tried a little of the broth.

A BETTER IDEA

Progresso means what they say when it comes to "All Natural" as this ingredients list bears out: chicken broth, autolyzed yeast extract, sugar, sea salt, carrot puree, salt, natural flavor, chicken powder, chicken...
...

A few days ago, I did a review of Campbell's Select Harvest Chicken Noodle Soup. There were some good things about that product but basically I was underwhelmed. Imagine my chagrin then to discover more of the same family of products on my shelf. Yes, not only had I bought two of the chicken noodle microwaveable bowls but in a weak moment I had also been suckered into buying a couple cans of Campbell's Select Harvest Garden Recipes Zesty Tomato Bisque Soup. (What some people won't do to save a dollar when something goes on sale!)

At first, I was going to craftily save it to donate to a holiday food drive but curiosity got the better of me and I tried this soup. I'm glad that I bought this (and I will be giving something ELSE to the food drive). I like the flavor of this soup which is basically a bisque which gains character from chunks of tomato. It has a lot of body to it and did not seem to be a bit bland (one of the major complaints in the reviews about the Select Harvest...
...

All I can say is try it!! I usually only buy the Campbell's soup brand but with all the press about BPA (Bisphenol-A) in canned goods, I've not been buying such products. But when you're sick, you reach for soup and so I gave it a try. I will never buy Campbell's tomato soup again. The Meijer Organic tomato soup was wonderful and full of flavor. The can reads: "Blend of organic tomatoes and seasonings". I cannot wait to buy more.

Note:

I did contact Meijer and asked if the product was BPA Free and the response is below:

Hello Erica,

All of our Meijer Naturals and Meijer Organics canned products are BPA free.

Respectfully,

Nathan C. Strom

If you are not familiar with Meijer, it is a Michigan based family owned grocery chain. They are also located in Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois. In 2007 they introduced their own line of organics.

Enjoy!!!

PROGRESSO HIGH FIBER SOUP
Chicken Tuscany

I am part of an online program called PSST! sponsored by General Mills. Occasionally, they send me free products to try.
This soup was one of those products.

The ingredients in this soup are chicken broth, Great Northern beans, white meat chicken, and assorted veggies; onions, tomatoes, celery, carrots, zucchini and spinach. It also has other flavorings added.

The soup was great tasting, and I liked the way it was seasoned, and the consistency of the broth. It was very filling.

It contains 7 grams of fiber per serving (each can is 2 servings) which is 28% of the RDA. It's low fat, only 3 grams of fat, and has no added MSG.

The downside, as is with most canned soups, is that it is high in sodium, 690mg per serving.
...

Boy do I love Olives, and Lindsey's Black Olives are the best. Since I was a kid, I always waited for the appetizers at the holiday dinners to come out....One...Two...Three....Four and I'd hear..Get those olives off of your fingers and stop playing with them....LOL. And eating them were the best part...These little black pearls are just so good, not salty like most, just pure goodness. I've gone through the days of telling my children to take the olives off the fingers, to now telling the Grandchildren...and knowing that they all are enjoying those Lindsey's as much as their Grandmother...

Lindsey's are great in recipes or just eating them out of the cans. A brand you can trust.

This is the one soup that actually satisfies my craving for Potato Soup when I can't make my home made version.

The consistency of the soup is medium thick -- BIG CHUNKS of potatoes -- just enough broccoli (could use a bit more) and just the right amount of spices. Not super cheesey but cheesey enough for my tastes.

If you like your potato soup a bit cheesier -- try adding 1 slice of Velveeta or American Cheese -- that gives it a bit more 'zip'.

One of the more intriguing subjects to surface over on the discussion boards this week was "Tuna Sandwich" in which the writer wanted to know about our individual preferences for tuna salad. This odd topic rang a bell as many people have perked up and responded. Apparently tuna salad is something a lot of us get pretty passionate about. Alas, it does require a certain amount of work which isn't difficult but may not always be convenient. For times like that, someone has invented StarKist Tuna Salad which is "Sandwich-Ready" chunk light tuna mixed with other ingredients including water chestnuts, celery, dill pickle relish, onion powder and egg yolks and packed in one of the familiar blue foil pouches. This is not like the tuna salad I make (which is my favorite, naturally) but it's pretty good and very convenient. A person could easily take this to work, along with a couple slices of bread, and throw together a fresh sandwich in the office kitchen at lunch time.

I have fallen into the habit of making my soup which means that I pretty much know what goes into what I have been eating. Perhaps this is why I got a little careless about label information. At any rate, I haven't totally given up on commercially prepared and canned soups and had become interested in the new Campbell soups I had been hearing about. When Peapod put them on sale for $1.67 each, I went for them faster than a dog lunging for a Pupperoni snack. In my haste and exuberance, I didn't even spare a glance at the nutritional information which Peapod conscientiously posts for all the products they sell.

Yesterday for lunch I tried Campbell's Select Harvest Chicken with Egg Noodles Soup. With no small difficulty, I pried the metal lid back, replaced the plastic cover, and microwaved for two popping, banging minutes. I don't know what other eager soup-eaters' experience has been like, but I enjoyed this soup. In my bowl at least, there were impressive chunks of...
...

The side dish; what will it be tonight? That is the conundrum facing millions of cooks all over the country, nay the worlds tonight. Better still, what side will it be tonight with these fabulous BBQ ribs I just spent five hours slow-cooking? The answer: Bush's Grillin' Baked Beans.

My Viewpoint

I am pleased with Bush's Grillin' Baked Beans. There are a number of flavors (recipes) to choose from including Southern Pit Barbeque, Steakhouse Recipe, Smokehouse Tradition, and Bourbon and Brown Sugar. I have tried all four recipes and all have much to recommend them. The beans look and taste like they are made from fresh ingredients and each has a unique taste that goes well a variety of grilled meats. And each goes well with backed meats as well.

At $1.52 a can at my local Super Target (where else) I can afford to keep a can or two of Bush's Grillin' Baked Beans in the pantry ready for quick eating, no matter what is on the grill or in the oven. And the size of the can is...
...

djacksonbye says "An old friend" about Campbell's Cream of Tomato Soup

I've been eating Campbell's Tomato Soup since I was a little girl. Whenever I was sick my mother would bring me tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches to help me get better. Now that I'm a "grownup" I mostly use tomato soup in cooking. I keep several cans in my pantry because I never know when I'll need it to make a quick sauce or add it to a casserole. The site Campbell's Kitchen (www.campbellkitchen.com) has lots of recipe ideas for creatively using the soup in your cupboard. But for me even today the best way to have Campbell's Tomato Soup is with a grilled cheese sandwich when I'm not feeling to well.
...

tpatti says "Did we really used to eat Campbells pork and beans??" about Bush's Original Baked Beans (brown sugar and bacon)

These beans are fantastic. There are so many varieties that there just has to be one that will suit your taste. I grew up on Campbells pork and beans, back then my Mom used to "doctor them up" by adding catsup, mustard and if we were real lucky some bacon. Ewwwww that hunk of pork that was in every can, who can forget that? My MIL made the very best baked beans, but heck they took all day, and lots of ingredients not normally on hand. The hardest part of the Bush's Baked Beans is picking which one sounds the best.
...

shannonreeves11 says "Progresso soup is fast, simple, and taste great!" about Progresso Soup Light Savory Vegetable Barley

Progresso Soup is wonderful! It is very quick and easy, which I love! My favorite kind is the Chicken and Rice. It has a bood blend of carrots, chicken, rice, and tomatoes! Another favorite of mine is the chicken noodle! I like good healthy foods, and progresso soups are a very good source of what you need for a balanced meal! The calories are very low! They also have the soups that come in just 100 calories! Its easy to keep up with your diet this way! This Brand of soups also come in low sodium, which is wonderful for people with heart problems!

I highly recommend the Progresso brand versus any other brand! For a long time, my family used the Campbells soup brand, and I have found that the flavor is not only better in the Progresso brand, but its much healthier.

Prices are not bad either! I can buy several of the Progresso soups, and save money throughout my week! Everyone knows how bad the economy has been and how important saving money is! I usually will just cook one...
...

AnnaBanana says "Sweetness and spice, that's what Charlie the Tuna is made of!" about StarKist Tuna Creations

It seems like if you eat enough dinners -- and you're not really a gourmet chef -- after a while you begin to get into a rut. Tonight for something a bit different, I turned to StarKist Tuna Creations, lightly marinated premium chunk light tuna which comes in a variety of flavors packed in convenient 4.5 ounce pouches. The flavor I chose was "Sweet & Spicy."

This flavor may not be everyone's cup of tea and perhaps a little sweet for some. There was an Oriental teriyaki quality to this tuna and indeed a recipe suggestion for "Sweet & Spicy Vegetable Stir-Fry" was on the back of the package. This type of tuna took a little getting used to but I enjoyed it. I didn't take too seriously the manufacturer's estimate that a 4.5 oz. pouch will contain enough tuna for two and a half people. Unless someone is anorexic or really just hates tunafish, the contents of the package is enough for TWO people (the other half-person is going to be on his own).

STATS:

To simplify things, I will...
...
