aleconner says "Ladies: enjoy this as a "malt beverage" -not a beer" about Leinenkugel Sunset Wheat

Consumer Note #1: This beer is made with natural flavors (?) * Murky amber-gold brew. Towering ivory head collapses and condenses quickly. — * Zesty citrus nose features a dominating lemony-orangey aroma. Little else is discernable. — * Fruity foretaste more closely resembles a wine cooler than a beer. Timid malt flavor hiding in background. Wheat? What wheat? — * Finish is a tad sweet and tangy...decent balance. — * Body is medium-thin (yeast in suspension contributes to body and mouthfeel). Throat-warming sensation is very uncharacteristic of this style (4.9% abv) — Synhopsis: — When I read that this beer was brewed with coriander, I was looking forward to trying it. What a let-down. Leinenkugel's Sunset Wheat has to be one of the more contrived "beers" I have tasted in quite a while. I have the word beer in quotation marks because I don't think this one...

Bryan-Carey says "Today is My Lucky Day with Lagunitas Lucky 13 Ale" about Lagunitas Brewing Lucky 13 Mondo Large Red Ale

Located in Petaluma, California, Lagunitias Brewing Company is a craft brewing operation that is known for its bold, flavorful brews. This brewery offers a good mix of regular and seasonal products, along with the occasional special release beer. An example of the latter is Lagunitas Lucky 13 Mondo Large Red Ale, a beer with a strong hop presence. — — Beer Commentary: — — Lagunitas Lucky 13 Mondo Large Red Ale is copper in color and has a clear, see- through body with a solid head of foam. The nose is spicy, hoppy, and a little bit fruity with some hints of pine cones. There is less citrus in the nose than with other west- coast ales, but the scent of citrus is there, hidden behind the scents of pine and spice. — — Lagunitas Lucky 13 Mondo Large Red Ale offers the flavor of caramelized malt along with piney hops and a slightly toasted malt character. Citrus taste is present as well, with some grapefruit notes followed by a dry...

* Opaque black liquid with reddish tinge when held to the light. Short dense tan cap of foam. — * Nose is olfactory cornucopia of coffee, burnt toffee, molasses and roasted malt. — * Faint, sweet malt foretaste transforms into dry, mildly acidic dark grain flavors, dark (baker's) chocolate and molasses. — * Finish is complex, intense and very long. — * Body is mostly full, silky-smooth with some astringent grittiness at the end. Carbonation is minimal. — Synhopsis: — Whew! Like this beer or not, you have no choice but to take notice of it. It is a complex melange of flavors and mouthfeels. It's faintly sweet in the beginning, dry and astringent at the end; smooth and velvety across the palate, but chewy and gritty after you swallow. — Altogether, this beer seems a bit rough around the edges, but it seems to work in this style. If you don't like big, dark, aggressive flavors this one is not for...

* Opaque black brew with towering frothy tan head. Nice lacing. — * Sweet malt nose has nougat and molasses aroma. — * Full sweet malt foretaste has cocoa powder and nougat flavor...reminiscent of a Three Musketeers candy bar. — * Sweet liqueurish coffee flavor (think Kahlua) has great length. Very malt oriented. — * Full bodied; silky mouthfeel. Low carbonation. — Synhopsis: — This stout is an excellent example of the "Foreign Style Stout" beer category (along with Dragon Stout from Jamaica and Tooth's Sheaf Stout from Australia). Stouts made in this style are neither dry like Irish stouts, nor are they cloyingly sweet like London-style stouts brewed with lactose sugar. They tend to be both malty sweet and roasty flavored at the same -and they typically have some heft with requisite alcohol content. In the case of Lion Stout, the A.B.V.
* Bronze-orange liquid; towering frothy beige head with delicate lacing. — * Rich, round caramel malt aroma with nutty backdrop. — * Full-on caramelly-malty flavor exhibits faint toasty notes and distinct nuttiness. — * Body is mostly full and a bit clingy. Carbonation is soft. — * Finish is richly malted -though not necessarily sweet- and looooong lasting! Some throat-warming too (7.2% abv). — Synhopsis: — This beer has long been one of Italy's little secrets. Because Italy is not known for its beers, few people bother buying or tasting them. Moretti is one of two of the more popular breweries in Italy and while its flagship product is decent, its LaRossa is exquisite! "Doppio Malto" is Italian for double malt -and that's all you need to know about this beer. If you love malty beers, this one is for you. — About the Sound Bite above: Birra Moretti has been devoured by the Heineken...

* Bright copper-amber colored, with short, dense beige head. — * Rich malt nose is caramel-toffee aroma backed by fruity esters. — * Fruity-caramelly entry expands with toasty malt flavor. Hop bittering challenges malt at midtaste. — * Finish is palate-coating malt flavors offset by resiny hop bittering on tongue. — * Body is medium-full; carbonation is downplayed. — Synhopsis: — This beer is very complex and palate-challenging -as well as palate-pleasing. It isn't, however, a great example of the IPA style. IPAs are generally hop-dominated from aroma through the finish, and this one is definitely malt dominated. — I suggest disregarding the label and drink it for what it is -enjoyable! —...

* Bright burnished copper with short, thin cream colored head. — * Mildly sweet malt aroma with a brief whiff of caramel and toasty notes. — * Foretaste is a repeat of the aroma: subdued sweet malt flavor offers hint of caramel, toast and even nougat. — * Finish is mellow; mild malt sweetness fades away slowly. Balance is in check. — * Body is medium-light; mouthfeel has light palate-coating quality. — Synhopsis: — Dos Equis Ambar (not a misspelling) is the "dark" version of regular Dos Equis. I've always been a bit partial to the Dos Equis beers for a good reason- these brews have not been completely "Americanized" for export to the U.S. They are not packaged in clear bottles and they do not hew to the concept of Mexican beers being light and fizzy (with a wedge of lime crammed in the neck of the bottle). — Unlike most of the other Mexican-made beers, Dos Equis still does...

* Dark (opaque) brown brew with dense tan head. Nice lacing on glass. — * Big bouquet of burnt toffee, molasses and mocha. — * Foretaste of semi-sweet roast malt and bittersweet chocolate offers hint of fruitiness (black cherry?). — * Finish is complex and flavorful; palate-coating flavor has good length. — * Body is deceivingly thin in consideration of its fullness of flavor. Oatmeal creaminess is lacking. — Synhopsis: — Having heard about this beer ahead of time, its reputation preceded it...and it didn't disappoint. There's a lot going on in this brew, though neither of the marquee ingredients really stand out. If I had to make a minor complaint, it's that the body of the beer didn't adequately carry the flavor. — When oatmeal is added to a beer, it is used more as a body-building and mouthfeel component than a flavoring. Whatever measure of oatmeal was used in Oscar's...

* Crystal clear straw-yellow with short, thin, big bubble head. — * Skunky bouquet overwhelms light, delicately sweet malt aroma. — Consumer Note: the skunkiness of this beer is likely a direct result of its being packaged in a clear bottle. — * Sweet corny-malty flavor is thin. Hop bittering is very restrained. — * Finish is fairly dry and rather abrupt. — * Body is thin, carbonation level is gassy. — Synhopsis: — I have confessed publicly that I am not a fan of light beers, but I also believe that every beer has its place. I will always concede the fact that beers like this have a following and give them the benefit of categorizing them as thirst-quenchers. — As for me, if I'm thirsty, I'll save my money and my liver and drink water. —...

* Brilliant amber-gold; tall, frothy white head condenses and compacts. — * Caramelly-toasty malt aroma is backed by light hop essence. — * Foretaste mimicks aroma- lightly sweet malt flavor is both caramelly and toasty. Earthy hop flavor has mild tang. — * Finish is fairly long and complex, but a bit disjointed. Malt and hop flavors are not completely blended. — * Body is medium, carbonation is soft. — Synhopsis: — Since the bottle's label doesn't declare which specific type of ale this is, I'm going to wing it and say that this is an English style pale ale. Based on that guess, I'd say the brewer did a nice job on this. My only negative is the lack of harmony between the flavors as the beer flavor fades on your palate. I'd like to see them more fully integrated into the overall beer character. —...

I don't proclaim myself as a beer expert but with this sorry excuse for a beer I can honestly say I have tasted beer like this before. Once when I let one sit open in the sun and then grabbed it by mistake, it was bitter and gross. I honestly believe that any beer you have to add a lime to is just not a beer....Period! — — Drinking beer should be an enjoyable experience..poured into a glass there should be a nice head of foam that entices your sense of sight and smell. That excitement should last all the way to the bottom of the glass. With Corona there is a real light color that tells my mind it is weak and not enticing at all. — — The taste to put it bluntly reminds me of the taste of ipecac, the stuff you take to vomit after ingesting poison! Sorry but to me it is bitter and vulgar, no wonder they tell you to add a lime to it. Something needs to mask that nasty taste! It also reminds me of Chinese beer which I also find revolting. If I want lime I will...
