I am a Parent of a 8yr old son and a 11 yr old daughter. I feel that homeschooling our children is better then letting the schools. Do to the fact that all the schools are doing now is teaching for the state required test so the schools can look good. The give them busy work the last part of the day and then send hours of homework home for the Parents to teach them. I homeschooling both my children. And yes, they were in public schools and did very well. They were not learning what they needed to know just what the teacher were TOLD to teach to make the schools look good. No i am not a teach by trade. there are wonderful programs and books out there for Parents to use. all they do is half the day do school and the other half its play. No rushing though lunch and throwing away what they buy or We as parents send for them so that they can go play on the playground for 15 Min's. We can expose these children to other family's with the same values that we have and want our children to...

spike says "It is and has been working for us" about Homeschooling

Before anyone puts down homeschooling, they should really look at the family and take a good hard look at public schools today. Both of our daughters have learning disabilities. They were in the public school for many years. The teachers were of little or no help to us or our daughters. We have now been homeschooling for 5 years. I am able to custom their education to each girl. Get them material that really interest them personally. If something does not work well for them, we can change curriculum so they can learn and succeed. They can go at their own pace. They have the love of learning back. There are many advantages to homeschooling that the public school cannot adapt to. Homeschooling may not be for everyone, just as the public schools are not for everyone, but for this family, it is working and the girls are learning more than they ever would have in the public school system. For example, my girls hated math. We finally found one we really liked. Math U See. Now they will do...

Homeschooling was first brought to my attention by my daughter's nurse. Since early childhood my daughter has had health issues that made attending public school a true hassle. When her nurse questioned had we ever considered homeschooling I immediately went to the library and checked out many books on homeschooling. I also searched the internet for anything associated with homeschooling. I thought it seemed like something interesting and maybe just what we needed to give my daughter the eduation she needed. I found a homeschooling group in my area and called them. I paid the membership fees and immediately began homeschooling. That was 6 years ago and I'm still homeschooling. I have a newborn that we're also discussing homeschooling when the time comes. There are many benefits to homeschooling, some of which are safety from as much crime, being able to vacation and still do school while away, no set times and really early mornings, being closer to family, and the list just goes on...

I do not know about everyone else but I really am digusted everytime I see my children's school menu's. Hmm let me see you will be having breaded process this, and breaded process that with a smidge of veggie. They do not even give eggs to kids anymore that isn't extended into some sort of french toast fingers or a burrito style slosh roll. When I was living in North Carolina they had an elementary school (I can not remember where or who it was) that decided they had enough of the Public schools system menu as well, except they changed it. They hired a real chef who designed an all fresh, all natural menu with a buffet for the kids to eat however much they wanted of fresh fruits, vegtables etc... Now the greatest part is that they said it cost them only a little bit more to do this than their normal prepared ,prepacked frozen foods. Isn't that awesome?! They could change it, is my point, but they do not at most schools. If these...

I just recently moved to Tomball Texas which is a suburb of Houston and the Krimmel Middle school my son attends has laptops for their students. This is the first school around here which is public to try this out and I have to say I have been waiting Years for this to happen. You do not have to pay for them either except to pay a small insurance fee broken into payments. It is awesome and my son loves it. Complete with all safety features and childproofing software I worry no more about supplies except maybe an occasional project etc. There is going to be a change in the high school here as well as they are going to "laptop it next yr I believe! If anyone is looking for great public schools I would look to this area. It is awesome to say the least and gee what a relief not to worry anymore about the supplies, not to mention savings, less enviro impact, and altogether empowering students for the future with techno skills. ...

Homeschooling is more than academic advancement. That happens just because it is so hard to avoid learning in the real world. School is more than academics, too. It's a place where children lose their innocence. A place where they are offered drugs, bullied, passed along year after year whether they comprehend what is being taught or not. A place where very few adults care about them. A place where kids learn that to get ahead, they have to flatter, cheat, lie, etc. — Homeschool so kids learn how to really learn. Homeschool so they don't get shot by a crazy with a gun. Homeschool so your kid isn't bullied into becoming a crazy with a gun. Homeschool because it will really show your kid that caring is okay. Homeschool for the fieldtrips. Homeschool for safety. Homeschool so that your kid can learn to read and do math. Homeschool to help them realize that peers don't matter and therefore there is no such thing as peer pressure. Homeschool so they can learn to get along with...

Homeschooling is a wonderful way to educate children. It is also not the end all to educating children. The fine line that divides academic educator to parent to child can have both positive as well as negative effects. Some children do not respond well to a parent as academic educator. When does the parent end and educator begin? It is not only the children who find the lines blurred. Parents can have difficulty shifting the boundaries of acceptable parental limitations and educator parameters. Homeschooling is not a fit for everyone and should never be thought of as the only method acceptable in the education of...

gamgeegirl says "think outside your mental box" about Why Should I go to College? - Everywhere,USA

I have a lot of friends who don't go to college. In fact in one close group of friends I am the only student of the bunch. I'm not smarter than they are, so far I haven't received and great life opportunities resulting directly from my enrollment, and because I pay for school and only have time for a part time job, I am poorer than they are. But I love college and believe it is the best thing for me. — —

Why? Because I know how to think. College teaches me to responsibly take information in from a variety of sources, to be barraged by information, in reality. It teaches me to sort out information in my head, to discern fact from opinion (harder than it sounds, mind you), and to detect bias. It teaches me to develop my own syntheses and apply them with confidence. — —

As added bonuses, yeah, I know lots of stuff, meet amazing people, have access to mentors, and receive an all around great quality of life. I love it, and despite the inherent...

Homeschooling is a fantastic way for children to learn beyond the confines of the classroom. It can be safer than many public and some private school programs. Being an educator, I have worked with children who have come from homeschool situations. Hence my sentence, dedication is everything. If parents take the job of education seriously and have competent skills (not education, skills) the children can learn well. However, I have had students who had no comprehension in the third grade and lacked the basic math skills because the parent didn't know what to do, was working outside the home and had a lot of work that had to be accomplished each day. On the other hand, I have worked with students who had a dedicated program, a time established that the parents seldom allowed to be interrupted and they took their work very seriously. The children flourished. If you are considering homeschooling, look seriously at your lifestyle and truly...

I want to comment about the executive director of SFIE and how he unfairly treated the teachers and students of the school. — John Kainlauri, executive director of SFIE, doesn't care about the teachers or the students for he only cares about himself. Our tuition fee increased last year without any reason. Now, I know why our tuition fee increased, maybe because Mr. Kainlauri wanted to increase his salary when in fact according to my teachers he received $112,649 and his assistant Kathi Rendon made $105,563 in 2005 whereas his teachers, over-qualified and excellent, made only an average of $18,000 in 2005 without health benefits. The school paid for his health benefits for $25,065 and his assistant for $16,556 in 2005. How unfair to our exceptional teachers! He wants to make more money at the expense of the teachers who work hard for the school. The teachers have been asking for a negotiation to increase their living wage and return of health benefits but they were ignored by Mr....

Class for almost 9 months at San Francisco Institute of English and I would not recommend the school for anyone. — We spent our last week after spring break in front of the school supporting our teachers who were striking for better conditions of work, fairly salary and health care. — The students tried to help and went to talk with the SFIE Director; Mr. John Kainlauri whom we never saw before at the school, didn't want to talk with the students and asked for a letter as a formal complaint of the situation. On this letter, signed by dozen of SFIE students, we made clear that we would like to hear from him on Thursday, 20th March 2008 before we start transferring to another schools. Mr. John called in sick!!!! — We spoke with Mr. John's representatives who were not allowed to give any position, and lied for the students saying that they will negotiate with the teachers.

There is no one best way to educate children. Every child is different, and has different needs, learns differently, views the world differently. But school isn't just about learning a particular collection of knowledge or a set of skills. Business people in the marketplace say that we can't teach kids what they need to know to do the jobs they will eventually get in the future because those jobs don't even exist yet. What they need us to teach them is how to be a team player, how to see the world as a global society, how to get along well with others, how to understand that people from other cultures see things differently than we do and not only is that ok - we need to market to that difference and so on. You can not learn those things in isolation. Even home schools that are collections of a few families are not microcosms of society. When students arrive at my high school after having spent their early years in a home school setting - they may read well, they may be very...

I graduate from Kaplan Career Institute's Paralegal Certificate Program. The perk of the program was that it was the only ABA approved Certificate Program in the Nashville Area. It was the only Certificate Program in Nashville. There are now other options for a Certificate, and only a matter of time for those new programs to be ABA approved. — My learning experience was great! There were some amazing instructors. The instructors, for the most part, seemed to be there because they had a passion for the field, and they truly wanted the students to dive into a new career with a broad base of knowledge. I can't say how great some of the instructors were. This is where the compliments end. — When I first went to check out the school, the admissions reps were, how to put it nicely, pushy. Kaplan definitely has sales people working as admissions reps. With lines like, "we don't guarantee you a job, but we have a 99.9% placement rate, so you could say it's...
