The good: The Synology Disk Station DS409slim offers fast performance, a robust Web-interface, and a generous feature set in a compact, aesthetically pleasant, and practical design.

The bad: The Synology Disk Station DS409slim doesn't come with any storage and is not easy enough for novice home users to use. Its Surveillance Station requires additional license fees to support more than one IP camera and its Download Station's software doesn't fully support Web sites that require authentication.

The bottom line: The Synology Disk Station DS409slim makes an excellent NAS server for both home and small business applications, and it fits especially well in offices with limited space.
...

yangrou says "Iomega Network HD - How all HD's ought to be." about Iomega Home Media Network HD

My wife surprised me one day with a 500GB Iomega Network HD as a present. I had for quite some time wanting a network HD, but wasn't really sure on which one to get. Thankfully, that decision was already made for me and now I just get to enjoy all the perks of having it.

Aesthetics:

Right when you open the box, you can tell that this network HD is going to be a looker. It is cased in a chrome/titanium look finish, which exudes that it is professional and something that you won't need to hide.

Construction:

The casing of the Iomega Network HD feels very solid. Not that I would advocate this but I feel like I could drop it from five feet without it falling into pieces. The case is a solid cool metal and it feels very sturdy and that it was build to last.

Setup:

The physical setup is really simple. Inside the box comes with everything you need to get started. First there is the HD itself, followed by a stand to keep it upright if you so desire. Attachment is as simple as just sliding the shelf...
...

I have several of these flash drives that range anywhere in the size from 1GB - 2GB. They are very reliable and sturdy when it comes to protection. The casing that they have are very durable. I have dropped mine and hit it against many things and it still continues to amaze me by working. The only thing that I do not like about this is that the caps can be lost very easily. They are small ones and i have lost almost all but a few on my flash drives. If they had a flash drive in which the cab was attached to it via a small string or such, it would probably make it much easier....

I bought the 1GB flash in October and it stopped working 5 months later. It wouldn't read on certain computers, or it would only read if I jiggled it. It completely stopped working a few days later and I lost all of my data on it. The company would not help me because I did not save the original packaging. Very unreliable piece of equipment....

ElephantDrive is a great product! With it I can store all my files, pictures, and music online and not on my computer. I don't have to worry about an external drive which could easily get ruined just like my computer can. In the case of a disaster, where my computer and the external both got destroyed I could still get all my information back because it is stored in the cloud.

Another great thing about this service is the amount of space they offer. I use there Home Edition account which provides me with unlimted storage, and when they say unlimited they truly mean unlimited. They also offer accounts for business as well. I first started using the product by trying their free Open Edition account. This gave me 1GB of space to use. It was very easy, but not enough space so I upgraded to their Home Edition. Now I have more space then I could ever use and at a great price. Only 9.95/month for unlimited space. I researched other companies and found while some might offer lower......

drtao says "I don't know what I ever did without this... Oh wait, yes I do." about Seagate / MIrra Personal Server

I don't know where to begin. Oh right, I run a business that relys on customer data on my computer.

Well one day I had a drive crash, and I thought I'd lost about 2 years of client files. I was sick. The last backup i'd done was so long ago, not to mention I had jobs that were due within days.

I was able to bring my computer back online with a new hard drive, and tried the first of the problem drives - Nothing. Then the second and bang, there was my information.

I vowed not to ever let that happen again. So I went looking for an easy backup system, and in the process I found Mirra (not bought out by Seagate). They produce what they call a personal sever, I guess I wouldn't go that far because it lacks a few things I would look for in a server.

But what it does do is incredible!!

First you plug the unit into your network and tuen the power on then run the software on each of the computers you'd like to backup and then you choose what information you want to backup. You can......

This fob works well. Actually it works better than most others do. I have three currently: a 256 M, a 512 M and the 1.1 G. There was no need to format these (remember those old floppies), they are truely plug and play for PC's. One drawback is that file transfer time is long for the initial transfer of everything. Another problem is that the cap is not attached when removed: I have the habit of taking it off and putting it in a safe place, and hunting it down later because the safe place is now forgotten. The lanyard is helpful to a point but it should also be noted that they can be attached to a key ring....

Summary

This device allows me to feel secure that my documents are being backed up on an external drive. If you are moving this from computer to computer and need to transfer a lot of material very quickly you will want an upgrade the memory.

What is a flash drive

This one is a tiny 4” by ½” unit. It is part metal, part plastic gizmo and lets me take all my data from my computer and transfer it to this tiny little thing.

Pros

It comes with a long blue cord, called a Lanyard. If I wanted I could carry it around my neck. I can then take the unit to another computer and have my material on it. I can throw it into my pocketbook - it is truly portable and worrying about having the wrong disc with me is a thing of the past.

It will transfer data, music and images from one PC to another. It is essentially a storage device.

It weighs less than 15 grams which is so light you won’t know it’s in your bag.

Cons

It took me an hour to initially transfer my hard drive to the...
...

matthewdfleming says "Awesome storage for the tech geek" about Infrant ReadyNAS NV+ (RNV2-S2-0000) Network Storage Server

I purchased this device because I was running out of storage space at home. I bought it with four 250 GB drives (which turns into about 675 GB under the expandable raid setup). The setup was super easy if you know what you are doing. If you don't, I'd get the tech geek that you know (we all know at least one) to help you set it up.

For me the hardest part was figuring out which protocol (AFP, NFS, SMB, FTP, HTTP, RSYNC) to use for each share. The performance is good enough to edit a movie (in iMovie) over a 100 mbit line and is supposedly really good over a 1000 mbit line. I didn't feel like upgrading my network and thankfully didn't have to.

If you want more detail, check out: http://mattfleming.com/node/187
...
