he Iomega eGo Portable Mac Edition combines a rugged exterior with a triple interface design that gives users the option to connect through USB 2.0, FireWire 400, or FireWire 800. The drive is available in three glossy colors in three capacities up to 500GB ($150), but it remains a low-cost solution for storage expansion. Although there isn't much going on in terms of cutting edge design, the Iomega eGo Portable Mac Edition deserves our Editors' Choice recognition for its quick throughput speeds, a rugged design that can stand four-foot drops, and a worry-free three-year warranty.

Design and features
The exterior of the Mac Edition eGo Portable is almost the exact same shape and size as the Windows version, but the triple interface connection adds a little bulk to the front. The device is still easy to throw into a jacket pocket or a carry-on bag, measuring 0.63 inch long by 3.5 inches wide by 5.63 inches tall. Iomega sells three different version of the device in ruby red (500GB), midnight...
...

he FreeAgent Go is part of Seagate's latest new line of portable hard drives and is by far the thinnest we've tested while still maintaining a reasonably fast transfer rate. Seagate sent us a blue 320GB model ($150) for our review, but you can take your pick of four vibrant colors in a variety of capacities from 250 up to 500GB. If you need extra storage on-the-go, the Seagate FreeAgent Go will make a useful addition to your daily carry.

Seagate's new 500GB BlackArmor PS 110 external hard drive ($160) provides trustworthy storage and data backup solutions for the consumer who needs more space. The shape and design of the drive isn't a far departure from the , another thin external HDD from Seagate. The PS 110 isn't the cheapest drive out there, but the ample backup software suite speaks to the value of this drive. If you're craving more portable storage for your indispensable data, you'll appreciate the versatility of the Seagate BlackArmor PS 110 hard drive.

Design
The Seagate BlackArmor PS 110 replicates the same thin profile of its older brother, the Seagate FreeAgent Go, measuring a very pocketable 5 inches long, 3 inches wide, and half an inch high. In contrast to the Go's array of bright colors and multiple capacities, the BlackArmor distinguishes itself and offers only one 500GB model in matte black. The downward bend at the bottom of the device creates a unique silhouette, with only one USB 2.0 port that sits on...
...

Don't be fooled by the eye-catching glittery paint covering the body--the drive features Iomega's rugged Drop Guard feature that protects the drive from up to a 52-inch drop. We like that all of drives in Iomega's current lineup include this built-in protection, as external storage devices tend to get thrown around more often than other accessories.

The physical design of the drive sticks to the basic rectangular external hard-drive design that we've seen repeatedly. We can't fault Iomega for adhering to the formula, but with other companies like Transcend and their pushing the design envelope, we hope Iomega will step it up with the next model. The majority of the case is smooth and rounded except for a cutout on the front edge that houses the USB 2.0, FireWire 400, and FireWire 800 ports. There's also a tiny LCD that glows green while the drive is in use, but unfortunately, this is the first Iomega external hard drive we've tested that does away with their classic auxiliary input power...
...

Dread00009 says "Decent performance; bus-powered; capacity gauge" about Western Digital Western Digital My Book World Edition Network Attached Storage

As the name suggests, the My Passport Studio has about the same footprint as an actual passport and is about three times thicker. It's also very lightweight at 6.7 ounces. The drive looks somewhat like a book, with a sleek aluminum casing that takes the place of the cover, and black plastic taking the place of the pages.

The My Passport features dual interfaces: FireWire 400 and USB 2.0. It doesn't offer FireWire 800, which is a bit disappointing as this option allows for the highest possible speed for a pocket-size external hard drive. On the plus side, it has a capacity gauge. It's just a ballpark measurement with four blocks that glow white as you gobble up another 80GB of space. And when not in use, the gauge can be slid to the side to cover the ports, protecting them from dust.

The drive ships with two data cables (FireWire 400 and USB 2.0), a quick setup poster, and a velour string purse. The drive is bus-powered. You just have to plug it into a Mac and it works. Preformatted for...
...

Dread00009 says "Inexpensive cost per GB; modern design; " about Seagate 250GB FreeAgent Desktop USB

The FreeAgent Go is one of the thinnest mobile hard disks we've reviewed; the size makes it easy to throw in your bag on the run. Its official measurements are 0.5 inch high by 3 inches wide by 5 inches long and only weighs 5.6 ounces. The multicapacity drives (250GB, 320GB, 500GB) come dressed in silver, black, blue, or red models, but the blue and red versions are only available in 320GB. We're not sure why, since they use the same cases.

Aside from their slim figure, the shape of the FreeAgent Go looks like a lot of other external drives. The top of the rectangular case has a brushed metal finish that looks sleek and even passed our scratch test with impressive resilience. The bottom is covered with a slightly rough material that prevents the drive from sliding around on a hard surface.

The only hole on the front is a USB 2.0 powered port that connects the drive to your computer. The top of the Go is perforated on one end and a series of white lights underneath illuminate and pulsate...
...

Thanks to its military-grade ruggedized exterior, the 320GB Transcend StoreJet 25 Mobile($95) is the ideal solution for on-the-go digital pack rats who don't want to baby their gadgets. It incorporates three layers of antishock protection and conforms to military-grade drop standards, meaning you won't have to worry about losing your data as it's rolling around in your bag. In addition to the tough exterior, the drive also stands out as the top finisher in our HDD speed and cost per gigabyte tests. As usual, though, the drive is lacking FireWire, which is the only hiccup that prevents us from awarding it our Editors' Choice award. If you're a strict USB 2.0 user and are rough with your toys, your search will end with the Transcend StoreJet 25 Mobile.

Design and features
The Transcend StoreJet 25 Mobile isn't the first external drive to get the rugged treatment.

The 2.5-inch external hard drive is a simple creature; it's necessary in a world of finite storage space, and although some manufacturers like offer a extra features like preloaded backup software, we also recommend the $175 Transcend StoreJet 25F. This stylish device cuts out all the filler and leaves a lightweight, easy-to-use 500GB external hard drive that transfers data quickly and won't leave a flaming hole in your wallet.

Transcend's StoreJet comes in 250GB, 320GB, and 500GB capacities with one uniform design for all three models. While some of you may prefer the bright colors and matte details on the series, business professionals and subtle fashionistas might prefer the executive black finish replete with a unique diamond pattern on the front faceplate, not to mention an overall shape reminiscent of Palm's original A mini USB 2.0 port sits on top of the device and is the only exposed port--unfortunately, you get no FireWire option.

Computer storage is always an issue. I create a lot of graphic images for my web sites and Incredimail I realized the best route would be to purchase an external hard drive. I am back to Staples for the purchase and great advice. This is a great place for me to shop as it is only three blocks from my house.

There were many choices but Western Digital has an excellent reputation so I selected the Western Digital Passport Passport Portable Hard drive is best decision I made. The price difference between the two choices was so nominal that I selected the 500GB drive and have not regretted this decision for one minute.

I can use my Passport hard drive on both of my computers. It saves storage space on both computers as I can simply save all my work on the Passport hard drive and share the file.

When my computer started acting up and I couldn't defragment I was told I needed to get some files off. I have a flash drive but I needed something heavy duty. I bought Western Digital My Book Home Edition 500 GB USB Hard Drive.

What I got

This is a portable hard drive. It is not a flash drive. It came with a USB 2.0 cable, a Quick Install Guide (very quick - luckily this is a cinch to use), an AC adapter, and 500GB Hard Drive Capacity.

About th Western Digital My Book Home Edition 500 GB USB Hard Drive

I didn't have to install this. I just put two plugs into My Book and one in my computer. I plugged it in the couple of times I have used it. I could keep it plugged into my computer but since I also have a flash drive I use that as a daily back up. When I backed up my material on two different occasions I could see the progress.

What is nice though is that My Book Home Edition is automatic versus my flash drive which I have to save to each time I save a document.

Seagate EE25.2 Series ST930817AM - hard drive - 30 GB - IDE/ATA review

General:This item is a very solid drive if you use it windows xp and I will say it spin very quite and your data is very easily accessible..

The only thing that need to be added on this hard drive is more cache. The cache that it comes with it is only 8mb .I think 16 or 32 will be a good thing. The rpm is also ok better that very old hard drives.

You cannot go wrong with this drive.I am saying this because the life cycle of this bad boy is very good.So do not be scared you can save money on energy and save yourself headache.

I build computers for my friends and family,it is a hobby for me.It is really easy to install this and get it to rspond.

Over all this drive is reliable and can give you good performance as I have been using lot of seagate drive.Seagate is a pretty reliable company I will recommend this to all techs that are out there helping out there customers to replace or upgrade a medium pc.
...

TheBard says "Could this be a Western Digital drive I can live with?" about Western Digital Elements (WDE1UBK10000) 1 TB USB 2.0 Hard Drive

Bottom-Line: If you want a small footprint, high capacity, affordable external hard drive from a name you can trust, look no further than the Seagate Expansion 1.0TB External HHD.

Lately it seems I need more, and more hard drive space, or could it be that I just like buying new electronics stuff? But you can never have enough storage space I say, and with the prices for both internal and external hard drives at an all time low, it was easy to grab an affordable external hard drive for not a lot of green. My first choice was a Seagate Expansion 1.0 Terabyte (TB) External Hard Drive, but not soon after I started using it (less than 30 days), it decided it no longer wanted to work for me! Here is the update I wrote to my review of the Seagate drive:

The plug-n-play WD Elements External 1TB Hard Drive is an all black 3.5" external hard drive with very few moving parts and only one small blue LED-in the back of the unit. The drive (aluminum) enclosure is not too heavy,...
...

TheBard says "My Laptop Has a New Lease on Life" about Western Digital Scorpio Blue 320GB 2.5" SATA Hard Drive

Bottom-Line: With the WD Scorpio Blue 320GB 2.5" SATA Internal Hard Drive my laptop now has a new lease on life.

My first choice for a new 2.5" SATA hard drive was Seagate, but I wanted at least a 320GB HHD, but the company didn't offer up anything at the price point I wanted to pay. So reluctantly I started looking at Western Digital (WD) drives. (I say reluctantly because my track record with WD drives has not been the best, in fact every one I've ever owned has crashed! But, WD offered up the drive I wanted for a really affordable price, so I went for it and purchased the Scorpio Blue 320GB 2.5" SATA Internal Hard Drive.

The Drive

The WD Scorpio Blue 320GB 2.5" SATA Internal Hard Drive is an Ultra-fast 3 Gb/s SATA interface drive designed for notebook computers. I purchased the drive bare bones from Buy.com for a neat little price of $64.99.

Installation

I bought the WD Scorpio Blue 320GB 2.5" SATA Internal Hard Drive intending to place...
...

I have a Sony Vaio AR-170 Custom built, twenty four HUNDRED dollar POC (Piece of CRAP). If I try to put ANYTHING on there it DIES. I had to sent that stupid thing in TWICE, the first year I had it. Don't get one! The only good thing that's come out of that hunk of junk is This!
My Western Digital 500 GB External Hard drive.
Every time my stupid computer crashed, I would lose, seriously, Hundreds of pictures,
Gone. Just like that. I would have to Re Install Everything, and I mean everything!
my music, which according to my ipod is like seven days worth of continuous music play.
And putting all that music on there is no short, or quick task.
My internet, my printer, my web-cam.
EVERYTHING! NO MORE! ITS HAPPENED THREE TIMES TOO MANY!!!
Everything goes straight to this thing and I Like it that way!
Sure I have my shortcuts on my desktop for here and there, but as long as the program itself isn't on my computer, I am happy as a pig in slop.

shigadeyo says "Rule #1: ALWAYS BACKUP YOUR DATA!" about Seagate 1TB USB 2.0 FREEAGENT EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE - SILVER

I purchased a Seagate FreeAgent 1TB Desktop External Hard Drive to serve as a backup drive. I have not been a big fan of Seagate hard drives in recent years due to quality issues, but the price was right and the 5-year limited warranty definitely helps (most external hard drives from other vendors have a 1-year or less warranty!). I addition to my regular backup schedule (RAID for real-time; daily off-site), I connect this drive weekly or bi-weekly, syncronize my data, and then store it locally to have on hand just in case I need to recover something from the last week or so. I purchased this drive in late May 2009 and have not had any issues with is so far. I don't leave it connected and running all of the time, but its speed and performance as an external backup drive fit my needs, even when the drive is encrypted. I don't use or recommend the included software, so I cannot comment on it but do use and recommend several free applications including DSyncronize. Also, the total...
...

vpowellusa says "It suddenly stopped working....my files are gone!" about Western Digital Elements (WDE1U2500N) 250 GB USB Hard Drive

At first I was very excited about the prospect of saving my files on an external hardware without using my desktop's storage. So I purchased the WD Elements harddrive with this purpose in mind. It promised to provide reliable service with its rugged metal case for "extra storage protection. The drive worked great for about a year, then one day I turned on my computer, tried to access a file on the Elements and discovered that the computer was not reading contents from the drive. There is no indication that the drive powers up though I checked and recheck the USB connection and power. I am very disappointed because I have lost ALOT of files I need. Now I have to figure out how to retrieve my files from a broken drive that remained stationary on my desk. I have lost faith in harddrives now and will now investigate storing files online. I gave the drive two stars, because it did work for awhile and gave me megastorage capabilities!
...
