frankob23 says "The longest lasting burner I have ever used in my PC." about Lite On DVD/RW Dual Layer Burner with Light Scribe

I purchased my Lite On Dvd Writer at Walmart for a fairly reasonable price. It has been about 3 years since this purchase so of course there are faster writers on the market today. However, I have had nothing but the best service from this writer. — It is dual layer compatable which is a huge plus. The blank, dual sided, discs are rather pricey still but it's worth it as you can burn twice the amount of data on one disc. — Recently I had a small problem with a disc I was using. It was sent to me in the mail with a product I purchased over eBay. It came damaged, with a small crack at the outer edge of the disc. I was very cautious about trying to use it at all but the disc contained the drivers for the hardware that I purchase. I gave it a shot and to my surprise the Lite On Dvd Writer was actually able to read the disc. — However, I soon had a larger problem. While playing back the disc I hear a loud bang inside my tower and I thought for sure I had blown a...

I bought the LG GSA-H10N DVD+/- Burner, and it's works quite well burning to the DVD+RW (8x), DVD-RW (6x), DVD-/+R (16x), DVD+R DL (10x) and DVD-R DL (6x) formats. It also reads and writes to DVD-RAM media at 12x, but I never use DVD-RAM. Its reads and writes CD at 48x speed. All in all, a decent burner. —...

This has helped me so much. I didnt think it would be a good investment but it really turned out to be something that I use more than my cell phone. I would recommend this to family, friends, as well as coworkers. I do a lot of family videos for everyone and I can just plug my comcorder into the laptop and make the dvds. This Christmas my familiy is getting an excerpt of my two year olds year all in one little disc. I thought what would be better than something that they miss everyday. We live away fromthem and they don't get to see him too much so let's give him what we get everyday I told my wife. This great Burner had me done before I knew it and and I shipped my Christmas gifts 2 weeks ago. I am all done with my shopping. You should try it, because now we are going home and have no shopping to be stressed...

I had a difficult time loading the program on my computer because I am on DSL. The antivirus program runs constantly & I didn't know how to disable it. Once I found someone who knew how to shut the antivirus program down, the program was easy to install. — I had tried another dvd program previously & the dvd's it produced were horrible. The picture was shaky, would freeze, etc. I figured I give this one a try & I am pleased with the results! — I made a home slideshow of various family events throughout the year as a Christmas present. I was able to add music and captions to the pictures very easily. Some of the pictures I used were not of the best quality. This program enabled me to correct each picture indivually as I was making the slide show. — The program is really easy to use, the instructions very easy to understand. — My resulting dvd is clear both picture and music wise. I am proud to present it as a gift! — I have not attempted to use...

I had purchased the Sony DRX-830u on clearnce which is supposed to read and burn just about every type of media you can think of. I had plugged it up and placed a regular dvd in it to watch on my pc when it becomes unresponsive as in the dvd tray would not open and had to stick a paperclip in the emergency eject method to get my dvd outta there. I went back to staples and gotten another one, I tried it again and same thing...after talking to a sony technician I was told that both items they had on the shelf at staples was bad so I wen back wanting to exchange yet again but there was a newer upgraded and more expensive model in the same location so I opted for a money back refund. Highly displeased with the product but the customer service was...

Even long after I got this DVD drive, it still works quite well. I tried it inside a desktop PC and on an external USB 2.0 enclosure drive case, and it still burns CDs and DVDs with ease. There are also firmware upgrades available for this drive. The only minor problem is that it causes errors when burning DVDs at maximum speed.

Bottom-Line: You would be hard pressed to find a better CD-R/CD-RW drive to create, edit and share customized CD's. — I have bought my last sub-twenty dollar CD/RW drive; that just don't last! Something invariably goes wrong with these cheap all-too prevalent drives, which only goes to confirm my firm belief that if you buy it cheap, you buy it twice. Just in the last month I have had to replace two cheap CD-RW drives because they would no longer read a CD. Isn't that what they are supposed to do!? The computer BIOS Windows XP would detect the drives, but they refused to read a disc, any disc, burned or straight from the plastic wrap. Good luck trying to get the fixed or exchanged; it is better to just toss the drive and start over with a quality drive that cost more, but will offer you years of reliable service. In both cases I chose the Plextor Plexwrite PX-230A CD-RW drive. — The...

TheBard says "Burn, Flip, Burn Baby; or say goodbye to paper labels!" about Hewlett Packard LightScribe HP DVD Writer 640i

Bottom-Line: The HP DVD Writer 640i with LightScribe technology is an outstanding bargain and a must have for any aspirating small business owner who needs to burn CD's for clients. — I burn a lot of CD's, both for myself and for clients. Most of the CD's I burn for myself are personal in nature (data, and or music), but those I burn for clients are professional; e.g. patches, software updates, virus signatures, structure backups, and other data. Over the years I tried all matter of labeling systems in a (vain) effort to lend some professionalism to the CD's, I hand out to clients, but products were always too cumbersome, or messy; there is nothing like a sticky label stuck in your inkjet printer to ruin your day! So I switched to a black marker, and while my penmanship is neat, the outcome was not always consistent, nor was it as professional as I'd like. The LightScribe HP DVD Writer 640i — In all respects...

TheBard says "Sony offers an inexpensive no nonsense Dual Layer DVD Drive" about Sony DRX-710UL

Bottom Line: Sony has always been and continues to be on of the best CD-ROM /DVD brands. — The Sony name has long been associated with quality in the design and performance of CD-ROM / DVD drives of all descriptions for the professional and semi-professional user. After all, the company along with Phillips Electronics pioneered the design and manufacture of the some of the first CD-ROM drives. — This distinction in the marketplace has meant that Sony drives always sell for a premium over other drives of comparable functionality, but their performance over other drives makes the price well worth paying. The good news is that in the last two years Sony drives have been more competitive with other makers. The Sony DRX-710UL external DVD±RW burner continues that fine tradition, by delivering outstanding, no compromise performance in a sleekly designed brushed silver package. The Sony DRX-710UL is a Dual Layer (DL)...

Bottom Line: I like the SHM-165 Drive w/ LightScribe. Together with the bundled software, the SHM-165 Drive w/ LightScribe is a hard bargain to pass up for the serious user with an eye on DVD and or VCD creation and editing. As I stated in my review: Windows Vista: You will Most Likely Need an Upgrade in Hardware, Microsoft has upped the hardware ante for the new Operating System (OS). A plain ole CD-ROM will no longer be enough to install the OS, you will need a DVD drive for the chore for a number of reasons. So when it came time for me install the Beta 2 version of Windows Vista on my home computer I needed to replace one of the CD-RW drives with an (inexpensive) internal DVD drive. Off to Newegg.com I wend to price and choose; I came up with the LiteOn SHM-165 Drive w/ LightScribe for under $70.00. — I was looking for a simple DVD drive, but those are next to impossible to find; multi-layered, multi-function units are...
