We bought the Evenflo Secure Step Metal gate because it looked sturdy and it looked easy for us to use. After installing it, we practiced using it for a few days. It took us a few minutes to figure out how to unlatch it and then discovered it was VERY difficult to open with one hand and you cannot just swing it closed. We decided to take it back and invest a little more money to buy a gate that we love (Evenflo Home Decor Stair Gate)....

GMRsMom says "Safe top of stair gate" about Evenflo Secure Solutions Top of Stairs Wood Swing Gate

We have a very long and steep staircase which has landed both my husband and I in the ER several times, so finding a secure and safe stair gate was very important to us. After searching around for a bit, we settled on the Enenflo Secure Solutions Top of Stairs Wood Swing Gate. We've found it to be a great gate!

It's a hardware-mount gate - which is what you want for a top of stair gate anyway as pressure-mounted gates can be dislodged if enough force is applied to them - and it's amazing the amount of force a determined toddler can exert! It was easy to intall - it only took us a few minutes. The hinges allow it to open in either direction and it will lay flat against the wall and out of the way when we're not using it. The latch mechanism is simple enough for an adult to open one-handed, but too difficult for a toddler to open. My 15 month old knows where the latch is, but he can't get it open. It's sturdy - our toddler bangs and shakes it and it doesn't budge. He also can't......

GMRsMom says "Okay, but not the most practical gate" about Safety First Safety 1st Lift and Lock Gate

I registered for this gate mainly because it was higher than other safety gates and it seemed to have fairly good reviews. It's an okay gate, but I've had some problems with it. First - it was very difficult to get it adjusted to fit the doorway we were using it in. Once we managed to get it set, it was fine, but setting it was a royal pain. It's also tricky to step over if you have shorter legs - especially with the handle sticking up. The handle with the lock is very stiff, making it difficult to open and close quickly - there have been times it's taken me a few minutes to get it locked. Not really practical if you have a toddler trying to get in.

On the plus side - it is a sturdy gate and it stays in place well. It also comes with hardware to mount it to the wall with - though I wouldn't use it as a top of stair gate since it still relies on pressure to keep it in place.

We've ended up leaving this gate at my parent's house and only use it in low-traffic areas. For the......

This gate has been great for our older child (3 1/2 yrs). We have had it since he was an infant and we still have it. We still use it daily and he still hasn't figured out how to open it. We use it at night time so that if he wakes in the middle of the night he can't get into trouble and so the dog can't get into his room. He has occassionaly climbed out of it but not enough to stop using it. We have a second one at the end of the hall. We use it primarily to keep the dog our of teh living room incase we have company or we have the infant lying in the living room floor or something. We love it so much that we have recently purchased a third one for the opening of our infant's room....

This gate works great for us - helping us keep our twins safe. The gate is easy to open and close - easy enough to do with one hand. The gate withstands the weight of two toddlers pushing on it without budging - and without tearing up the door frame. We liked it so well, we bought a second to replace another gate we were trying out....

This Evenflo Gate is great for young babies, who either can't climb, or won't climb [either being afraid or other] and for small pets.

It is rather easy for a child to climb over. It doesn't fit all doorways. Some of my doors are rather small and it doesn't fit.

But it does stay once you get it up. It doesn't fall easily even if shaken or pushed against. It is even a little bit hard for an adult to open sometimes. And It was the cheapest on the shelf.

I bought 3 at one time. If I had only bought one, when I returned to buy the other ones I would eventually need, I probably would not have bought the same one again.
...

We bought this gate (it came as a set of two) for a really good deal. I don't have stairs to worry about, but I wanted them so I could keep our daughter out of the pantry where we keep the trash, the kitty litter and catfood bowls. I thought I could use the spare to keep her inside when we left the front door open for the cats in the summer. I never really had to use it for the second purpose, however.

What I did wind up trying the second one for was to keep her in her room when she began climbing out of her crib and we tried switching her to a toddler bed. Our determined little girl climbed right over it, and when we raised it a little higher to keep her from climbing, she squeezed herself under through the little gap between it and the floor.

But, that is not a product issue, we just had a very active tot who did not appreciate being contained at bedtime while we were still awake. Looking back, I'm quite impressed that the thing never toppled or shifted with her weight. She...
...

MaineMomof2 says "One of the best things we ever bought for our toddler" about North State North State Superyard XT Portable Playyard & Gate

I love this product so much, I have two of them for two of my floors. My toddler loves it because she really isn't "confined" - so to speak. She doesn't even notice that she is not able to get out like she does in a pack and play.

Most of the day, our toddler is out and about playing with me and all of her toys in her play room - but when I need to put her in a safe place for a few minutes - I put her in this with some toys and she is okay with it.

This year, we made the decision to place our superyard around our Christmas tree. I can't take credit for the idea (we saw it on John & Kate plus 8) - but it was the best idea ever. Our toddler couldn't play with the ornaments or knock over the tree like I am sure most toddlers do.

We also use this play yard outside - it gives me peace of mind since we live near a busy road....

I use this gate to block the bottom of the stairway in my home when we're downstairs. I have a climbing toddler, and he can't climb this gate. It is lightweight and fairly easy to use. You do have to pay attention to what you're doing when you put it up, but that goes for everything you do when you have a toddler. The gate is affordable, expandable (I sometimes use it in my diningroom entry--4ft), and dependable. I always give it a good push to make sure it's in place and once you've locked it in place good and proper it's pretty solid. It won't work in all doorways. Make sure that you measure before you go to purchase a babygate. Please note that this is not the choice for the top of stairs. ...

I am sure you will hear from neighbors and family (or you yourself think) that "cages are for birds and hamsters". Well first thing first: this is not a cage; this is a playyard and it is necessary for your kids' safety. You should be careful about how you introduce this product to your baby: there should be favorite toys in there at least in first few tries, you should take her/him immediately when she/he wants out and you should not keep your kid in this all the time (needless to say kids need space to play). If you use this product as you are supposed to (just to have your peace of mind while you are in restroom/bathroom or kitchen where you temporarily have no visual of your kid) it will definitely serve you and your child well. As a matter of fact, if you don't overuse it and just use it when necessary as described above, I am pretty sure your kid will want to go in it and play there himself/herself. That's what happened in our case. And if your kid likes the playyard but you think...
...

I have hade to travel many times over the years since the first of my three kids was born 7 years ago. When traveling I never know exactly how things are going to be where we are at, and how safe things will be for my kids. I love this gate because it fits easily into both car trunks and the space behind the last seat in my mini-van, allowing me to take it everywhere. I have used this gate at friends and relatives homes, in hotels, many different places of worship. I do warn that this gate should not be used at the top of stairs, only an installable gate should be used there. For all other places I find this to be better then a second set of eyes....

This is the best safety gate we have ever had. We have 3 children, and I just wish I had it all along. Both of my older children can do it on their own. I used to have to lift them over our other safety gates. My son is almost 18 months, and it is still working for him. The slats are vertical, so he can't climb them like the others. So far he has not figured out how to open this one. It is easy enough for my 4 year old, but still hard enough for him to do. Great gate, worth every penny....

My wife and I recently had a new deck built on our house. The deck is elevated off the ground, and has a 48-inch wide stairway. We have an 18-month old child that loves to play outside. This gate fit the stairway opening perfectly. The hardware mounts to the deck posts perfectly. Better still is that the gate can be lifted up and off of the mounting hardware. This extra feature allows us to bring the gate indoors during inclement weather (rain, snow, etc.), to ensure longer life of the gate. the latch mechanism is simple to operate, yet challenging enough to small children that they cannot open it. I recommend this gate without reservation to anyone looking for a safety gate to fit a wide stairway opening....

Bryan-Carey says "Keeps the Kids and Pets in Thier Own Safe Area" about Evenflo Simple Fit Pressure Gate Model 0306

Everyone with small children and small pets knows the importance of keeping the little ones contained within a defined area. No one wants to child proof or puppy proof the entire house so it makes sense to set aside a couple of rooms for our small children or pets and then block the entrance/exit to these rooms so that escape isn't possible. One device that is used for this purpose is the Evenflo Simple Fit Pressure Gate Model #0306, an inexpensive way to contain kids and small pets.

Gate Commentary:

Gates are an essential device for the home that has a crawling or walking infant/toddler or the home that has a small dog or litter of puppies. Most people set aside a few places where their pups or kids are allowed to roam freely and a gate is placed at the openings to prevent an easy exit. I have used gates in the past with dogs but the Evenflo Simple Fit Pressure Gate was purchased for another reason: To keep my little girl from leaving her defined area of walking and crawling.

The best feature...
...

Great Gates, this one, is not.

This is the cookie cutter gate, found in almost every store across the country, in my opinion, its a low quality substandard gate. I purchased this product in lieu of the others available. The low price attracted me and I think I just wanted to have it on hand in case I ever needed it. Well I needed it, then needed it again....

My problem is that the Evenflo Position & Lock Gate really doesnt fit my door openings all that well. The rubber pads on the ends actually lifted the paint in small circular patches from my door jams! My daughter even managed to get her hand through the holes somehow, which was a huge shock, I thought the openings met industry standards. This incident made for a lot of crying and vaseline to help get her hand out.

When installed, the gate works well, its durable and can handle a fair amount of climbing, banging, pushing and pulling.

This Evenflo Position & Lock Gate isn't the best or the safest out there but if you need a cheap barricade...
...
