I have my computer and external drive running about 18-24 hours a day 7 days a week and have not noticed any problems or changes in the external drives run time, transfer speeds, or failure.  The unit remains completely cool even after running for these long periods of time.  This is a definite must have for backing up data and information.... I would definitely recommend this mp3 player for those who like a small sized mp3 player as well as easy use and maintanence....
