NubtheSquirrel says "YO JOE!" about GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra

When I saw the initial trailer for G.I. Joe, I initially dismissed it. I thought it was going to be an utter failure and it looked like absolute crap. I hated the idea that the Joes were not "Real American Heroes" but rather the best of the best from different countries from around the world. I hated the idea that Joseph Gordon Levitt was going to be playing Cobra Commander. I really hated that Marlon Wayans was going to be playing Ripcord. I was absolutely ready to hate G.I. Joe with every fiber of my geeky being.

I am most pleased to say, I was wrong.

Allow me to put things into perspective. I am a huge G.I. Joe fan. If there was one toy that I had more of than my precious Star Wars figures, and my Captain Power, it was G.I. Joe. I don't mean the twelve inch figures either. I mean the 3 ¾ "figures. I had tons of them; mountains of them. So many that I simply didn't know what to do with them. You get the idea. I watched the TV show religiously. I knew...
...

NubtheSquirrel says "Too much style, not enough substance. " about Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

Before I get into my review of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, let me explain something. I am a hardcore Transformers fan. My friends and I marathoned the first two seasons and the animated movie before I moved out here to Texas, I still buy the toys both old and new, and I will be indoctrinating my son as soon as he is old enough in the classic cartoons. That said Michael Bay's latest is a gloriously beautiful mess of sound and fury, with some things to like, some things to love, some things to absolutely hate and other things to question if they were absolutely necessary.

Before I get into it, be warned, I will delve into some heavy spoilers.

The story is near incomprehensible. It was obvious that Bay wrote much of the movie himself with the action sequences during the writer's strike of 2007 and then writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci jumped and hung a threadbare story over the action. I won't get into the specifics, just know that it involves the return of Megatron,...
...

NubtheSquirrel says "Better than T3 to be certain" about Terminator Salvation

Terminator Salvation is action packed, filled with tense drama, and some incredible effects. Too bad it ultimately feels somewhat hollow. All me to explain. I liked Terminator Salvation. I enjoyed it much more than the disasterous T3. I thought Christian Bale, Sam Worthington, and Anton Yelchin all delivered performances that really made the movie soar. That said, it felt like ground that we have tread upon in better films. It felt like the producers found the director they could find as the lowest bidder and went with him.

McG is not a bad director. However he does stand at a level of mediocrity that really makes you wish he could do more. The movie was missing an emotional core. If you are going to put fantastic actors together in the movie, give them some really great scenes to work and flex their acting muscles in. I don't mean just the three leads. I also mean Bryce Dallas Howard and Helena Bonham Carter who are wonderful actresses in their own right and they are......

NubtheSquirrel says "Have me go where no one has gone before; I want more!" about Star Trek (2009)

Seriously, how good is the latest Star Trek?

Allow me to put it in perspective this reviewer's state of mind with this film. I am a hardcore classic Trek fan. That's not to say that I have seen every single episode, know every movie by heart, or even seen the animated series. Far from it. In fact, I've seen a few of the episodes, I have seen all the Classic Trek movies, but don't know them by heart, and I've seen very few of the animated series. That's not to say that I am a Star Trek fan. In fact, I am a huge fan. In fact, one would say I would be called a Trekkie, if not for the fact that I don't wear the pointed ears or the Starfleet uniform in real life. Hell, I don't even own a Star Trek action figure. (My wife owns the classic Trek Barbies though, but that's another story...)

Imagine my shock and wonderful surprise when I saw the trailer for Star Trek. I was not expecting to go as absolutely insane over this movie as I did based on the trailer alone. ...
...

NubtheSquirrel says "One of the most beautifully animated movies ever." about Finding Nemo

Finding Nemo is one of the very best efforts from Pixar. I cannot say it was the best as all Pixar animated films are a standard in animation and storytelling that even the original standard, Disney aspires to. The film begins with a clownfish named Marlin, (played brilliantly by Albert Brooks) losng his wife and almost all their kids to a horrible attack from a barracuda. Almost all because there is a sole surviving egg that while damaged in the attack, that is the one that Marlin names Nemo which was the name that his wife wanted to name all their children. This within the first five minutes of the movie mind you.

What follows is a movie so clever and spectacular both in animation and story that it is very near perfection. If you haven't seen it yet, go and get a hold of it. I refuse to spoil the wonderful surprises that the movie holds in store for you. Andrew Stanton and his crew of Pixar wizards clearly know how to engage the audience, and at the same time make...
...

NubtheSquirrel says "FUN!!!" about Race to Witch Mountain

Ask me to describe Disney's Race to Witch Mountain in one word and what would I say?

Fun.

Race to Witch Mountain is a re-imagining of the classic Disney film Escape to Witch Mountain and it stars ex-wrestler Dwayne Johnson (known to many as "The Rock") as cab driver Jack Bruno who has to drive two mysterious kids, Seth and Sara (played by Alexander Ludwig and AnnaSophia Robb) to recover a device that may or may not spell doom to the entire planet Earth. They are being pursued by the U.S. Government as well as a truly evil creature called the Siphon, which has only one purpose, which is to destroy its intended target.

Directed by Andy Fickman, who directed last year's hit "The Game Plan," (also starring Johnson) "Race" delivers a clever script, some very funny moments involving some Stormtroopers, and some action sequences that left this reviewer's audience collectively saying "woah" at multiple points throughout the movie. The movie also features some great cameos by the actors who played...
...

NubtheSquirrel says "Scary as hell and a fun ride." about Xbox 360 - Resident Evil 5

Resident Evil 5 is the latest in the Resident Evil franchise from Capcom. The game follows hero Chris Redfield and his sidekick Sheva as they are trying to capture an international terrorist in Africa. Things go horribly wrong which is in true RE fashion and they have to fight their way through an ever growing horde of zombies, natives, and horribly mutated creatures that defy description.

The graphics are simply outstanding. They are beautiful and textured in ways that have never been done in a game from this series. The character movements are fantastic from the slightest movement to little facial ticks that a real person would have. The lighting and mood is always creepy, even when you are in the city areas.

The voice acting is top notch. There are no characters who you will hate because of their voices which is a problem I have seen with games of this type before. The story moves from scene to scene with a breakneck pace that will make you want to not stop playing...
...
