LadyBeth says "Great film about football and life" about Facing the Giants

My husband and I were in a hotel on a business trip when we heard on the news that "because of the Christian content of this movie, it is to be rated PG." We had to LAUGH!! Of all the garbage that is being fed to our youth today, then finally someone comes up with a decent movie with no violence or filthy language and it must be rated PG because of Christian content. Of course we had to buy it because of the limited number of clean, decent movies offered these days. This group of people is to be commended for their ability to use limited resources to make movies with such character-building content using real-life situations. I recommend this movie as well as Flywheel, and am looking forward to their future productions!!...

LadyBeth says "Honesty is the best policy-even for used car salesmen" about Flywheel

It is amazing how this group of people, with limited resources, can produce such great movies. My hat is off to them!!! It is such a pleasure to find family friendly movies--especially with a great Christian theme. The leading character in this movie learns that honesty is the best policy for used car salesmen and that trusting in God is the best defense one can have when facing adversity. I recommend this movie as well as their first one, Facing the Giants, and am looking forward to the next feature!!...

LadyBeth says "One man's enduring quest to abolish British slavery" about Amazing Grace

My husband gave me a DVD of this movie as a Christmas gift because the night we went to the theater to view it, they were doing some screen repairs and we were unable to see it then. This was an enjoyable movie to me as there seems to be such a lack of "clean" movies to watch nowdays. This is based on the true story of the many-years struggle of William Wilberforce to abolish British slavery. His minister was John Newton who penned the famous hymn, Amazing Grace. Newton was haunted with his own "ghosts" of the slaves he traded before finding the amazing grace of Jesus Who "saved a wretch like" him. While watching this, I could see the correlation of how some individuals today view gambling, porn and other such establishments as merely "jobs" to help the economy, rather than the "poison" it actually creates within our communities. Wilberforce faced opposition to abolishing slavery because of the impact on the slave traders income. The inhumane treatment and sometimes...
...

LadyBeth says "John Grisham at his worst" about Playing For Pizza

This book was a great disappointment to me. It did not have the "thrill" of suspense as in other John Grisham books. I felt that this was a guy's book, unless, of course, you are a female who is a football lover. The Italian cuisine was of interest, but I kept waiting for some excitement to surface....

LadyBeth says "A heart-warming story of physical & emotional hearts" about When Crickets Cry

This story is about hearts--physical and emotional hearts--and about the mending/healing of both. When reviewing this book at my book club meeting, some of the book club members were turned off by the medical jargon. However, being a former Emergency Medical Technician, I was intrigued with it. This is a heart-warming story of a successful cardiac surgeon who began his career in order to help care for his childhood sweetheart, who later became his wife. After she died of her heart ailments, he became a recluse until he was faced with the need to use his cardiac skills to save the life of a young girl he grew fond of after meeting her quite by "accident." She, and the aunt who was caring for this orphaned niece, were instrumental in the reviving of the doctor's emotional heart....

LadyBeth says "Remarkable story of a family's 20-year secret false imprisonment" about Stolen Lives: Twenty Years in a Desert Jail

Although I read this book several years ago for my book club review, I am still haunted by the horrible experience this family endured. In my naitivity, I was shocked to learn of such happenings of the 20th century--during my lifetime!! "Stolen Lives" refers to the fact that a mother and her teenage children, in the prime of their lives, are falsely imprisoned for the father's political doings, after he himself has been murdered. They were kidnapped and then held prisoners in abandoned places where only those who held them captive knew of their whereabouts. Their other family members didn't know if they were dead or alive. Their living conditions were horrendous with no medical attention for their parasites or other maladies. Their only contact with the outside world was when their meager food allowance was brought to them monthly. You can imagine the creative ways they had of keeping it from spoiling as best as they could without the benefits of refrigeration or other means......

LadyBeth says "A miracle book about being resurrected from death." about Don Piper et al - 90 Minutes In Heaven: A True Story of Death & Life Books

Don Piper describes his miraculous journey from being dead for 90 minutes after his car accident to the present. If anyone doubts the hereafter, this is an excellent book to read as he describes, somewhat, his visit to Heaven. I would like to read more details of his experience in Heaven--who he saw other than some family members, etc. However, he goes into great detail to describe the agony of his extensive recovery from his numerous injuries. Being an independent person previously, he was forced to begin relying on friends and family for assistance. I was surprised to learn that he grew up about 30 miles from my hometown....
