July 2008 Diabetes Review
New Products, Myths Debunked and Maybe Some Science

Pop Star Dishes on Diabetes

Nick Jonas, 15, has the world by a string as part of the million-selling, multi-platform Jonas Brothers. Nick also has Type 1 diabetes and publicized his condition well this month. Props to the teenager and his media team for helping a teen favorite show that normalcy (and maybe even pop stardom) is certainly possible with diabetes.

Cumin or Curry: The New Cinnamon?

You may not know the Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center, but you likely know Columbia University Medical Center, which is home to the the diabetes treatment and research facility. Researchers there are working with a spice related to cumin that they say shows promise in helping control glucose levels. Meanwhile, in a Wall Street Journal article this month, the Center also said it was carefully examining leptin as a possible culprit in causing a person's body to regain weight. Their theory is that changing leptin levels......

GeorgeBounacos says "Traveling with diabetes just takes a little preparation." about 7 Tips For Diabetics On Vacation Traveling This Summer? Don't Forget These!

Summer vacations require a little preparation for most diabetics, but unless your medical team tells you otherwise, there is no reason for you to stay home. Traveling to different countries with diabetes, sometimes solo, requires even more forethought, but is still easily done.
Here are seven tips to make your vacation a time to remember for the right reasons!

1) A Medic Alert bracelet. If you don't wear one now (and you really should consider doing so), you will want a piece of jewelry identifying your condition when you're on the road. Be sure to order from whatever company in enough time for you to receive your bracelet. With an eye to fashion, even Medic Alert offers tiny emblems on necklaces or other pieces in a variety of colors. After talking with multiple emergency responders over the years, all of them have told me that they'll always look to the wrist and neck for a symbol. I wear a bracelet with a huge red emblem 24/7. I simply purchase the chain slightly larger than I...
...

GeorgeBounacos says "There is some serious misinformation out there." about Diabetes Books For A Diabetic's Library

So you have diabetes. There is a lot of information on the web, and much of that information is questionable. That is why you need to know the top diabetes books. Diabetes is a life-changing illness. Don't leave your management to chance info you read on someone's blog.

You, my friend, need some printed material. But beware. Books go out of print fast as medical knowledge changes. To be safe, skip the eBay auctions and private sellers unless you know for sure that you are buying the most current volume and that the most current volume's information is still valid.

A great example of that is the Joslin Center Guide many doctors and many websites still cite. Unfortunately, the book is more than a decade old, and you need to more current information.

One other issue: Try to steer clear of the "Reversing Diabetes" or "Miracle Cure" type books. There is no miracle cure short of a pancreas transplant and some other major things (which you are likely not getting) and there is no......

GeorgeBounacos says "Eating out on summer holidays requires planning for diabetics" about Diabetic Eating Out Guide: 10 Ways Diabetics Can Safely Eat Out On Independence Day

Many people gathering on holidays using food as a focus of their celebration. There are ways to enjoy informal outings, even barbeques, without hurting yourself. Here are ten suggestions for eating out today, keeping your blood sugar under control and being in a great mood to see the fireworks explode tonight.

1. As with every day, testing is today's key. If you use a glucometer, carry your smallest one in a pants pocket or purse. Test in your car before you arrive for a decent baseline and then again before the serious eating begins. When it comes to small meters, One Touch's Ultra Mini is an awesome product. I disliked One Touch's products just two years ago, but the company's Ultra 2 is my favorite meter now. Unfortunately, holidays are days that require multiple finger sticks because you're eating different foods in new settings and have different environmental conditions to deal with. Test pre and post meal, and don't forget any meds you typically take.

2. Grilled meats are...
...
