BookWyrm says "They pulled it off" about The Prestige

I saw The Illusionist first, and while that one was visually beautiful, it was on the dull side, and so I wasn't sure how The Prestige would fare. — It fared very well, much to my pleasure. The story flowed without flaw and was worth the entire journey, not merely to reach the title element...It had the visual appeal of the time period, the characters and plot made sense and it kept me guessing. The ending was one I never saw coming and was tickled to be caught off guard by. —...

BookWyrm says "My new favorite comedy duo" about Hot Fuzz

Having loved Shaun of the Dead, I wasn't sure if the boys could pull off another movie that would catch me off guard the same way. British humor isn't quite my cup of tea, as the saying goes. I like some but by no means can I claim to be an avid fan. These gentlemen stand out though. Hot Fuzz didn't "americanize" itself to be more potentially popular, and I still got the gags. The twists surprised me, which I adore, as so few movies can do that lately. The writing is clever and intelligent, even in the way it goes crude or rude. Crass with class perhaps? Whatever it is, I really like it and cannot wait to see...

BookWyrm says "Tried too hard to be the gayest Not-Gay guys" about Blades of Glory

This movie was all about the punchlines. The story was written around how to fit as many of them in as possible. Now, it wasn't so bad that I wanted to gouge my eyes out, I actually watched the entire thing, and just kind of felt.. eh. My 11 year old son, on the other hand.. who absolutely loves goofball movies.... decided less than half-way through that he wanted to finish his homework... and a book... and start reading another book... but he did so while still keeping me company as I finished the flick.. bless his heart....

BookWyrm says "Only the good - get cancelled - young" about Firefly - The Complete Series

So sad, but true. This was one of the best shows going that never got a real chance. Great characters and wonderful fun with the stories and development. Naturally, it got the ax.... But all hope was not lost, the movie Serenity tied some things up nicely and opened other doors for potential continuation. — I thought it would be strange when it first came on. A space western? guns and space travel? no lasers or aliens? hmm... but it so worked, and more, the universe created for it made it make sense. Such a motley group and without the stereotypes, individual characters just seemed to fit the skin they were given. How could you not love Jayne and his almost non-existent moral compass. Humor, drama, action... ahhh... I'm starting to mourn again. —...

BookWyrm says "Not as good as the original" about Hairspray

I really wanted to like this movie more. I am a fan of the vast majority of the actors and actresses involved and overall they each did a fine job. The problem was the material. I feel they over politicized it so that it was like being bonked over the head, enough that it was distracting rather then enlightening or entertaining. At the same time they dumbed it down and tamed it back. The music was fine, nothing amazing but fun and catchy. The dancing on the other hand was only humdrum, a bit dull and as cute as Blonski's character, she just wasn't that good of a dancer. Nothing in the movie really caught me or stood out. Fine to watch in the background while surfing or doing other things, but not worth a deliberate second sit...
