We have had 3 different pet rabbits over the past 10 years. Overall, I love them as pets. They are quiet and easy. We have kept all ours inside, in a large cage in the kitchen.
Our first 2 rabbits were Netherland Dwarfs. Our current rabbit is a bit large lop-eared. All are sweet animals which our kids (ages 10,8, and 6) love. I think smaller rabbits are probably better choices if you plan to keep the pet indoors.
Our rabbits have all had health concerns of some type. The first rabbit had front teeth which did not fit together properly, necessitating us trimming the teeth monthly. This was not a lot of fun! I later learned that many rabbits with this condition are destroyed, so I am glad we could save Fluffy's life :)
Our second rabbit developed a stomach/bowel obstruction (similar to a cat's hairball). This is serious because, unlike a cat, a rabbit can't cough up the hairball. Our rabbit died at age 18 months from this condition.
Our current rabbit developed an infection causing him to tilt his head sideways and become uncoordinated. Thankfully my husband was able to research the condition online and treat the rabbit with antibiotics. He is now fine.
Our rabbits (like children) all have different personalities. Some have been warm and playful; others seem to enjoy their solitude and don't want to interact as much. Find out as much as you can about a rabbit's personality before you adopt, to ensure that you'll be happy with your new family member.
Carewise, rabbits are easy. They eat pellets and drink water, and we change our rabbit's litter box once a week. That's it!
I hope you will love your pet rabbit as much as we have loved ours!
