Most HelpfulIt seems like there are more movies recently that are targeted at older adults. These movies have no car chases, no explosions and no aliens craving human flesh. What they do have are stories of middle-aged people with whom the audience can identify.
Julie & Julia is one such movie and it's based on...

Most HelpfulOK, I loved the book. I didn't care that some critics called is overly sweet (or whatever); I loved it. It cracked me up. I couldn't wait for this movie and then. . .not sure if I was a victim of high expectations or if the movie just legitimately sucked, but, wow, did I ever walk out of the theater...
review »Just saw this Julie & Julia tonight. I thought it was great. I remember reading the blog years ago and I am a bit of an aspiring cook so how could I not be excited to see Julie & Julia!?
Not to cop out, but as I sat down to read this review I saw GreatMartin's review and thought he really did a nice job of summing up the movie.
So, I am off to buy the book which our friend said was even better than the movie.
Today I did a first in my life. I went to the movies by myself. I have often heard my friends who have children say they would give anything to go to a movie without the husband or the children. I just couldn't fathom that but today I got bored and decided I wanted to see a movie. Julie and Julia wasn't in the lineup for Girls Night Out so I figured I would go to that. And now I am glad that I did.
Nora Ephron did a wonderful job writing and directing Julie and Julia. There are a handful of leading characters in the movie but the main storyline focuses on two couples:
Up front let me state that I am in the minority as I don't think Streep is the greatest actress of the century or whatever. To me she always seems to be 'acting' like saying, "Isn't my accent great? Don't I look and act like my character should/would?" I didn't care for her in "Mamma Mia" or "The Devil Wears Prada" plus many of her main movies.
Let me add that I really wasn't expecting much walking into this movie. I thought it might be okay and a good way to get out of the heat and humidity and maybe have a laugh or two.
I was wrong on both counts! "Julie & Julia" , with a few minor quibbles...
review »When I told people that I went to see Julie and Julia, everyone fell into two categories, either telling me they had wanted to see it or asking me if you had to be a foodie to enjoy the movie. The answer to the latter part of that in one quick word is no. I am far from being a foodie, but I enjoyed these two women that were going through life and looking for something more than what they had, knowing there was something else out there for them.
I am not a foodie. In fact, the only thing I knew of Julia Child before this was what I saw Dan Aykroyd imitate on Saturday Night Live. I did used to be...
Meryl Streep does it again! Her portrayal of Julia Child is the perfect homage. Streep captures both the joy and passion Ms. Child found in cooking...her humor, her dedication...and the endearing romance she had with her beloved husband.
But the plot is not entirely of a whirlwind romance; there are sour notes as well as sweet...the story recounts the trials of a woman dedicated to her craft, to her passion befor the time of women's lib. But Julia was Julia and nothing was going to stop her...and this too is juxtaposed by the contemporary struggle of Julie, to get out of her rutt, to find...
review »I've never been that into cooking. The only reason I do it is because my husband won't, my kids won't, it's cheaper than going out, more nutritious than going out, and, truth be told, a means to an end. I remember when my Mom used to watch Julia Child on TV when I was a kid. I always hated the sound of her voice, and, let's face it, what kid would enjoy watching Julia Child? HOWEVER, I thoroughly loved this movie. I went because a group of friends invited me to join them. My interest was in spending time with them, not because I had any desire to see it. Nobody could be more surprised...
review »Julie and Julia was one amazing movie and I so thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Meryl Streep was amazing as Julia Child and Amy Adams was great as Julie Powell. This movie kept my interest the whole time that it was on and at times, I laughed at the antics of what was going on.
Julia Child was the wife of Paul Child, who worked for the government, and wanted to figure out what to do while he was working. She tried to find things to do and ended up learning to cook French food. Once she finished that, she was asked to help write a cookbook. Meanwhile, in the distant future, Julie Powell was floundering,...
review »DON'T FEAR COOKING - OR LEARNING TO COOK!
Julia Child learned to cook to fill empty time in her life. Juie learned to cook to learn how to better communicate, and learned to blog.
Amy Adams and Meryll Streep both did excellent jobs of portraying their characters. Streep especially captured Child, right down to her "Bon Apppetit".
Though the previews and trailers my portray this as a "chick-flick", there were just as many men as women in the theater.
My husband and brother-in-law both laughed so hard that they had tears in their eyes several times.
The biggest surprise in the movie is the...
review »After reading the book Julie & Julia I was excited to watch the movie. The movie lived up to my expectations. I found both the book and the movie inspiring. I loved how the movie showed the parallels in the life of Julie Powell and Julia Child. Both women fought hard to over come obstacles to reach their goals. I found myself and fellow movie goers laughing outloud through many parts of the movie. Meryl Streep did a great job playing the great Julia Child. Amy Adams did a nice job making Julie relatable through all her breakdowns during her attempt to cook all 524 recipes in 365 days. ...
review »My husband and I went to see Julie & Julia while on vacation in Hawaii. It is a good, cute movie. Meryl Streep does a great job playing Julia Childs. As usual, a great performance by Meryl. I like Amy Adams, and thought she did a good job, too. At first, it I kept thinking of the movie "The Devil Wears Prada" during scenes with Meryl and Stanley Tucci, but that got better as the movie went on.
It was very interesting to learn all that went into making the cookbook a reality, and it was fun to hear the audience's reaction to the different foods that are shown (audible ooooooh's and mmmmmm's.) ...
I go to a lot of movies, specifically, I go to a lot of kid's movies. I got a little grown up time the other day got out to see Julie & Julia. I had expected to like it, but I hadn't expected to love it. Watching both of them work and struggle to find their dreams, finally succeeding beyond their wildest expectations was both a delight and an inspiration to keep trying to find the my true dream.
