I just got back from my annual "Spring Break" with my cousin, TunefulGal. As always, we had a wonderful time which this year included a visit to the Museum of the American West (a delight which I heartily recommend), a no-holds-barred Girls Night In Scrabble free-for-all with my cousin's friends, and serious grazing at a variety of great restaurants. I had my first taste of Thai food, to say nothing of Thai Iced Tea (add a shot of coconut milk, please!) All of those things were great but nothing compared with the late Sunday morning leisurely breakfast shared by the Tuneful couple and me in front of the fireplace in their charming living room. TunefulPal treated us to his special spicy scrambled eggs, Van's Multigrain Waffles, a liberal dose of Trader Joe's Maple Syrup and something which I had never tried ... Promise Buttery Spread.
This product is apparently meant to be a substitute for margarine or butter. TunefulGal recommended this as a healthy alternative but I -- the skeptic in the family -- was not prepared to be easily convinced so I was genuinely surprised by the delightful taste and easy-to-spread consistency and could hardly wait to pick up my own Promise at Dominick's as soon as I got home. Promise is not a bargain-basement item and costs about $3 for a 15 oz. tub but a little furtive research backs up my cousin's enthusiasm for this spread.
STATS:
A tablespoon is considered to be one serving which contains 80 calories, eight grams Total Fat, one and a half grams Saturated Fat, zero Trans Fat, six and a half grams Total Unsaturated Fat, four grams Polyunsaturated Fat, two and a half grams Monounsaturated Fat, zero Cholesterol, 85 mg. Sodium, and no Partially Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil (a component which has been replaced with 550 mg. Omega - 3 ALA and 3,300 mg. Omega - 6 LN).
According to information at Promisehealthyheart.com, Promise Spreads recently conducted a national survey of over 320 cardiologists and found that 9 out of 10 would endorse the Promise brand of soft spreads for their patients, based on nutritional information.
TASTE TIP:
Promise Buttery Spread has a winning taste and is delicious enough to use with anything but especially lights up the flavor of hot goodies such as waffles and my other favorite ... Cinnamon Toast. Nobody had to convince me on THAT score!
