"Yah needa getta wrice cookah"

I looked up at the solemn expression of the Asian woman standing in front of me.  I asked what a rice cooker would do for me and she began to embark on a long diatribe of why a person could not LIVE without possessing a rice cooker.

For years I never could find one.  I looked, but none of the stores had one.  Over the years I forgot about it.

One day I was wandering through the Dollar General store and found a PROCTOR SILEX 10 CUP RICE COOKER in their appliance section.  The price was not too bad, so I decided to buy it for my family for Christmas.  After all, NO FAMILY could survive without one, right?

WHAT IS THE PROCTOR SILEX 10 CUP RICE COOKER LIKE?

The PROCTOR SILEX 10 CUP RICE COOKER is a nifty little gizmo.  It has a plastic housing that sits on the counter on three legs. It is quite sturdy despite the three vs four legs it stands upon.

A teflon coated aluminum pan sits on the container, which has large disc inside.  In the center of the heavy metal disc is a spring loaded small disc which goes down when the teflon pan is filled with rice and water and is ready to start cooking.

The lid is clear glass with a metal rim around it and a metal grommeted steam hole.  There is a plastic handle screwed into the center top.

On the front of the cooker, there is a very simple lever.  When the rice is put into the container, the light is yellow.  When you want to cook it, you plug it in, and press the lever down and the light turns green.  When the rice is done, the light turns yellow again and the rice is done.

HOW WELL DOES THE PROCTOR SILEX 10 CUP RICE COOKER WORK?

There is a fill line in the pan which is maximum level for water and rice combined.  I find that if I fill it slightly below that, it works better.  I also put about 2 cups of brown rice in the cooker with that much water to make up the difference.

The rice is usually done in about 20 minutes to 35 minutes as it varies each day with the warmth of the water used, outside temp, etc.

There is also a warm feature where the rice will be kept warm once it is done, but I am not fond of that- it tends to keep cooking the rice so you end up with a dark crust on the bottom.  I prefer to pull out the plug when it is done and just wait.

FINAL COMMENTS

The PROCTOR SILEX 10 CUP RICE COOKER model number 37533 is a great little gizmo.  I love the convenience of not having to watch a boiling pot on the stove.  I don't like the teflon aluminum pan, however, I would prefer steel but we don't make THAT much rice yet to be concerned about that.

The teflon does wear off which is not too great, but again, eventually I hope to get a better rice cooker. The cord is a nice length of about 3 feet.

For the $10 that we paid for it, this little rice cooker has served us well for the last few years.  The Proctor Silex 10 Cup Rice Cooker makes a fabuous gift when you don't know what to get someone- I have bought several and each person has loved it.

I know this- we have made more rice than we used to because of this cooker.  It is a quick easy way to throw a meal together when you don't know what else to make.  Pop the rice in the cooker, begin the stir fry chopping and by the time it is all done, VOILA!  A nice meal with very little effort.
