My Coke Rewards —

I am going to flat out and say it:

I hate drinking Coke.

The taste never appealed to me at all and it still doesn't after all this time. There have been times when I have been desperate enough to humiliate myself in drinking the very thing that cleans toilets very well. With that said,I don't mind the other Coke products, such as Sprite and Fanta, even though I have cut back on my pop consumption (yes, where I come from, it's called pop, not soda).

A couple of years ago, my wife joined a program called My Coke Rewards. Under each bottle cap is a code that can be entered online. Each code is worth a certain number of points. By accumulating enough points, one can redeem them to get some cool swag. If there was ever a time to become a "Coke addict", this would be the time to start.

My Coke Rewards is exactly what it sounds like... receiving rewards from Coke. The first step is to register online at www.mycokerewards to get the ball rolling. From there, it's just a matter of entering codes in order to receive points. These points can be found under the caps of bottles or in boxes of 12-pack cans. There are times when special promotions pop up where one can receive bonus codes. For example, right now. McDonald's is hosting its Monopoly game again. One of the instant prizes (if you play online and land on Community Chest) is 25 points for My Coke Rewards. So far, I've won six times. That's a quick 150 points. Still the best way is to just gather these codes is by purchasing your favourite Coca-Cola product.

The bottle caps, regardless of the size of the bottle, is worth 3 points. I always thought that this was a weird situation given that one 20 oz. bottle was given the same weight as a 2 litre bottle. However, the more I thought about, the more I can see why this is the case. Usually a 2 litre bottle will cost the same, if not less the a 20 oz bottle when on sale. A 12-pack, 12 oz. cans (fridge pack) will earn you 10 points. The best one the obtain, if you happen to buy in bulk in places like Costco, is the 32 pack, 12 oz. cans that will earn you 25 points.

A complete list includes the following (as reported on its website):

  • 32 pack, 12 oz. cans 25 points
  • 8 pack, 20 oz. bottles 24 points
  • 24 pack, 12 oz. cans 20 points
  • 6 pack, 24 oz. bottles 18 points
  • 12 pack, 12 oz. cans (fridge pack) 10 points
  • 24 pack, 500 mL 10 points
  • 12 pack, 500 mL 10 points
  • 1 litre bottle 3 points
  • 1.5 litre bottle 3 points
  • 2 litre bottle 3 points
  • 3 litre bottle 3 points
  • 20 oz. bottle 3 points
  • 32 oz. bottle 3 points
  • 450 mL PET 3 points

The object is to collect enough points and redeem them for rewards. Here's the kicker: none of the rewards are appealing at all and trying to earn points for them seems like a futile endeavour. It's hard to reach a certain point range when only a maximum of 10 codes are allowed per day. So to really take full advantage of this system and gather a lot of points, one would have to really stock up on ten 32 packs to get a total of 250 points and do this every day in order to get something worthwhile. For the average Joe, I'm sure it be around 6 points per day. But don't wait too long in entering your codes. If you are not active on the site (active meaning if you haven't entered a code in a while), then your points will disappear.

I also hate coming close to redeeming for something that I might actually want only to find it it no longer exists. The worst is when it is re-offered again, only at a higher point value than before.

The site itself is very slow if you don't have a fast internet connection. Then again, even with high-speed internet, I still find that the site lags. I like how it is laid out but the functionality leaves something to be desired.

Originally, the program was supposed to end on December 31, 2007 but was extended until January 31, 2009. Does that mean if you don't redeem by then, all your points will disappear? Or is My Coke Rewards going to extend the program for another cycle?

So why bother continuing if it doesn't seem worth it? I think I've invested too much time already to just let it end. I also know that I really won't be redeeming anything worthwhile as well. Still, there is that one word: hope. Perhaps I might be able to actually get something of a useful nature. Of course, I scour my office like a vulture looking to see if there are any caps that are available. People think I'm a greenie and do my bit in recycling. Please, I have no altruistic agenda other than subjecting myself to the masochistic tendencies in obtaining the unattainable called My Coke Rewards.

Is it really masochism or optimism? Either way sounds foolish.

That's absolutely correct. It's all your fault. For some reason, you alone have single-handedly brought the downfall of My Coke Rewards. Now I know where to point my finger. ;)

I totally agree. It's funny, I just today noticed some member named "cokecol" signed up JUST to tell me that it's MY fault that coke rewards suck. Well I know it's not my fault, they just suk.

Where I come from, it's "pop" too. :)

Thoroughly enjoyed your review, elvisdo, and the tag line alone had me cracking right up. :)

Thanks! I actually do like Pepsi a bit better than Coke. I have to check out their program as well and see what it's like. My wife joined some time ago but I haven't been following it as much. Maybe I should now.

Wow! Great review. I'm more of a Pepsi gal myself. I like their program too.
