PattyTherre recently started me thinkin'...damn it. Now the rooms going to smoke up with my brain works.
Yep...got me thinkin' and so I thought of a couple of those songs that I sang as a kid, teen and even adult that I just boogied to and didn't delve deeper for the interpretation hiding in those seemingly innocent lyrics...
1. Simon and Garfunkle's? "Puff The Magic Dragon"...sweet and innocent as I was, I actually believed that it was all about a young boy and his imaginary pet dragon. Damn it...some pot smokin' hippie thought long and hard about it and idolized his vice in a song. (Never meddle in the affairs of dragons because to them, you are crunchy and taste good with catsup.)
2. Eagles, "Hotel California"...OK, I really thought it was glaringly obvious that this song was about a hotel. Someone once tried to talk me into thinking it was about a guy who get's a bit "peckish for some nookie" and decides to visit a whorehouse but now with a little research in my young adult years and actually listening a little closer, it's about a guy who smokes too much pot and passes out or falls asleep behind the wheel and dies. "You can check out anytime but you can never leave" now makes a world of sense to me...(hence, I never smoke and drive...lol)
3. Mamma's and Papa's "I saw her again"...yes, makes sense, but not widely known is it was written as a slap in the face from one guy in the band to the other. They were both spankin' it downtown with the blond Mama, and neither would stop the affair. That eventually, aside from Mama Cass demise, would lead to the breakup of the band. Sigh...all that's over because of a tramp and a ham sandwich. (I still eat ham)
4. Quarterflash's "Valerie"...all I thought was two females meet in art school and eventually their friendship ends because they drifted apart. Actually with a bit more paying attention, it's about one "good girl" who gets caught up in her internal struggle against staying in a relationship with a lesbian who starts stalking her after they sleep together once, and the "good girl" decides that being a lesbian is too weird for her. (art school was a learning experience)
"Lola" made sense with a little thought...that's pretty racy stuff for the time in which it was written but it's all about a guy who finds the perfect girl and then finds out she's a guy, too...but hey, he thinks...why not? Lola's not your average girl!
Cheers to PattyTherre! Thanks for the great material to get me writing again. I bet there are more of those great oldies out there that we grew up singing in the hallway on our way to geography class! I'll think of some more later, I'm sure.
