I will admit that when I first started watching Hannah Montana I didn't get the "best of both worlds theme." I was a bit confused with the Hannah and Miley switcharooni. I am known as a child/youth magnet. I don't know if it's because I look so young or if I'm hyper or both but children are drawn to me and I am usually the designated entertainer in larger groups where there are adults and children present and at some point I had the opportunity to watch this show with a 10-year-old.
Well, I wasn't too sure about admitting I liked watching Hannah Montana until I realized that many of my peers and colleagues also enjoy the show. Maybe it's because they have young girls. Maybe it's because we remember Billy Ray and the "Achy Breaky." I don't know what the logic is but many adults must come out of the closet and admit they love the show. Shoot, we enjoy many of the Disney Channel shows: Suite Life, Phil of the Future, and so forth. When the kids are at my house I won't be embarrassed to watch these shows with them. We don't have to worry about what someone may say when mad and we don't need to worry about violence.
Miley does have a very southern drawl that reminds me of Fran Drescher as the Nanny. But she can sing! I love watching the show when she has guest stars on. I especially like the episodes when Brooke Shields or Dolly Parton is on. I think Jackson makes the show. Billy Ray isn't much of an actor but when you put him on the show the chemistry is there. Probably because it's father and daughter in real life on the screen. I guess his role just comes naturally.
I think the show is very appropriate for young people, guys and girls alike. There are enough male roles that the guys can either choose to like it because of Miley or because of all the guys (Billy, Jackson, Rico, Thor and her guy friend). The producers have done a good job at addressing modern day issues but not going to extreme to represent the subject. I hope that as Miley gets older she is able to stay grounded and that she doesn't lose sight of where she came from. I hope she doesn't get caught up in the glitz and glamour and become another casualty like the Olsen twins, Lindsay Lohan, or Britney Spears. She has a good head on her shoulders now and she is clinging to an unwaivering faith. I hope she sticks to it down the road.
I won't cry when the show is discontinued because I anticipate that happening as Miley matures and ventures out but I will continue to watch the show when there is nothing else on. I don't make it a priority to watch it but sometimes you just need a break and this is good wholesome, family fun.
"There's a new sheriff in town, bam! And a new deputy too, bam!" Sometimes we can have the best of both worlds if we just figure out how.
