Freecycle —

Freecycle is a great concept that hooks up people needing things with people needing to get rid of things.  It keeps the landfills from filling up as fast and helps the community out.

One Man's Trash...

I have posted all kinds of no longer needed things from coats to thermostats on Freecycle.  I don't remember ever posting an item to give away that no one else was interested in.  I even found a home for an unwanted Beta Fish.

I have also received items that I wanted on Freecycle.  Some items had been posted as giveaways; others I requested.

Goes Both Ways:

Many times the giver gets as much or more than the receiver.  For example, we bought a large flat screen TV last spring and needed to get rid of an older model Sony TV in a wooden cabinet.  We needed the space right away and so I posted the offer and stipulated that the TV needed to be picked up that day.  We had nearly 60 emails from people wanting the item!  The family that picked it up was so excited and we had our space for the new Television.  It was a win-win for both of us.

Freecycle is a yahoo.com group.  In order to participate you have to register and agree to certain rules.  Just go to yahoo, register if you don't already belong, search for Freecycle and then register on the Freecycle group closest to you.

A Word of Caution:
Because you are dealing with strangers you need to be safety minded.  Correspond through email and go with your gut instinct about people who respond.  I have only had one instance of feeling something was off.  Instead of giving the person my home address I met them at a public shopping area and took a neighbor along. Better safe than sorry, I say.

The other thing to be aware of is that people can sometimes be people.  You will find greedy, rude and negative people on Freecycle.  On the other hand I have found that the positive outweigh the negative and have even made a friend or two on Freecycle.

My Viewpoint:

Freecycle is worth belonging to and participating in.  Give it a go and see what your community is like.

I love Freecycle. Most of the items in my area are for kids and since I don't have any at home and no grandchildren(: I don't use it all that much.

I think anything like this is great. When we used to live in Connecticut our town had a landfill/recycling center that kept an area of serviceable items people could take, swap or leave.

This is a wonderful thing and I have many friends and coworkers who have given and received thru freecycle. My church does something like this on a bulletin board. We post the item we wish to donate or receive and then someone will contact us.

We got snow today!!
