All you have to do is find the city closest to you, join the group and start reading what others have to offer and post your own items that you no longer need. One of the good things about freecycle is there is no mailing involved since everything is local to you. If you are getting an item you go to that persons house and pick it up. If you are giving something away they will come to you to pick it up.
In all the years I've been a freecycle member I have never received an item that wasn't in absolutely perfect condition and that's ranging from clothing to household items. Just this month I got a 6 foot artificial Christmas tree complete with it's own storage bag and a huge storage box of Christmas decorations most of them still in boxes. In return for my good fortune I gave away 3 kids winter jackets that were my granddaughters and in perfect condition to a mother who just moved to Boston from Arizona and was in desperate need of winter clothing for her daughter.
