Fatigue, stress, a headache, an argument – there are any number of reasons you may not be “in the mood.” But it’s not what’s going on between couples that may be getting in the way of great sex, it’s what’s beneath them. In a survey of 1,000 Americans age 18+ conducted in the first quarter of 2012, 60 percent of Americans said they crave sleep more than sex, and some even admit to falling asleep during sex. And there’s definitely a gender divide. Men most often favored sex over sleep (58 percent vs. 21 percent of women) while women felt just the opposite, craving sleep over sex (79 percent vs. 42 percent of men).
The survey was conducted by the Better Sleep Council, an arm of the mattress industry, so we should consider the source. But what if buying a mattress could both help you get more rest and improve your sex life? Which raises the question, what is the best mattress for sex?
It’s been reported that nearly one-third of adults said they would purchase a new mattress if they thought it would improve their sex lives. So how much weight does a mattress really hold in these matters of the heart? Quite a bit, sex therapist and Book of Love author Dr. Laura Berman told Viewpoints. “A good mattress can not only make sex more enjoyable and comfortable, but it also helps you get a better night’s sleep,” Dr. Berman said. “This translates into energy, rest and, hence, an improved sex drive.”
What kind of mattress is good for sex?
When it comes to logistics, certain mattresses are better than others. While personal preference clearly comes into play, Berman is a fan of Tempur-Pedic and other memory foam mattresses because they’re designed to contour to one’s body shape, a feature which may alleviate any discomfort during intimacy. To boot, foam mattresses have little to no bounce, so sex is comfortable for both partners.
Another issue is the move toward separate beds because the mattress is uncomfortable for one partner or both. That’s no recipe for a passionate cocktail! One of the highest-rated mattresses on Viewpoints is the BedInABox.com PacBed Original Memory Foam Mattress (rated 94/100), considered “the best for couples.”
“I HAVE NOTHING BUT RAVE REVIEWS FOR THIS PRODUCT. IT HAS HELPED MY MARRIAGE!!—-by keeping us in the same bed when I had begun to think separate beds were going to be the only solution to my husband’s tossing and turning. If he flips over now, I never know it.” –MackLen, Reviewer since 2008
Memory foam mattress sales are up
Barrons.com reports that memory foam mattresses have seen a 20 percent climb in sales recently, but that increase is due to people more focused on getting a good night’s sleep. In fact, many people say that memory foam mattresses make sex less than ideal.
One Viewpoints contributor who reviewed the Sealy Posturepedic TrueForm Visco Memory Foam Mattress had a complaint that might effect their sex life.
“I felt like I was sinking while I was lying on it, and when I turned, I felt like I was being smothered. I ended up giving it away to a friend, and now am looking for something better, maybe a little more firm.” –Melfunkshn, Reviewer since 2008
Others report that the foam overheats and is uncomfortable, although this is an issue for sleeping in general. Barrons.com did speak with the CEO of Tempur-Pedic, who claimed a very small percentage of people return their mattresses because it is too hot or for difficulty having sex.
Do your mattress homework
On the plus side, most stores give you a generous amount of time to try out your mattress in case you need to return it. Be sure to check the policy when you are mattress shopping.
Dr. Berman recommends doing your research by comparison shopping in person, lying on mattresses and touching the material.
“The average life span of a mattress is 10 years, which means that you shouldn’t skimp on quality,” she says. “Personally, I sleep on the natural memory foam mattress by Natura World’s Sensation Mattress with Soy memory foam. It provides awesome support and helps regulate body temperature.”
It seems a better mattress just may be the new aphrodisiac.
