Breville Juicer BJE510XL: “Best Overall” in Viewpoints Reviewers’ Choice Awards

Breville juicer

The Breville Juice Fountain Multi-Speed BJE510XL is called “the dream machine” by one Kentucky reviewer who has used other juicers that didn’t hold up.

A juicer is a sign that someone in the kitchen really cares about eating healthy.  Although the true health benefits of juice (vs. eating the fruit whole) is a matter of debate, reviewers agree on their love of the Breville Juicer BJE510XL ($200), otherwise known as the Juice Fountain Multi-Speed. Of the 73 juicers reviewed on Viewpoints, it wins “Best Overall” juicer in the Viewpoints Reviewers’ Choice awards.

Breville juicer: “Best Overall”

Breville Smart Oven

Breville has a full line of juicers priced from $100-$400.

There’s an interesting thing about people who juice. Viewpoints is filled with reviews of products that people got as gifts, but not so with juicers. Juicer owners have dreams about how much they want a juicer, research all of the options, talk to their fellow juicers, read more reviews, finally try a brand, may give it up for another, but ultimately settle on a machine that can deliver day after day as only a juicer can.

And no, a blender cannot do the work of a juicer.

This Breville juicer is nicely in the middle of the Breville Juice Fountain product line. Not too big, not too small. Not the most expensive, but not an entry model either. It’s for the person who is serious about juicing and knows what the $200 investment represents. The Breville Juice Fountain Multi-Speed BJE510XL is in a class by itself, rating nearly a perfect ’10′ on each of the six criteria used to grade juicers: Pulp Setting Effectiveness, Stability While in Use, Ease of Cleaning, Durability, Versatility/Number of Features and Design.

Breville juicer

The Breville Juice Fountain Multi-Speed BJE510XL comes with a recipe book for inspiration.

Pulp setting effectiveness

One of the advantages of using a juicer for juicing (vs. a blender) is that it removes the pulp. In fact, you may not recognize the pulp left behind because it is so dry — every drop of juice removed from the apple, orange or carrot. This Breville juicer is also a “smart juicer” which adjusts its speed to “maximize juice and minimize waste,” says Breville. Reviewers back it up.

“The multi-speeds allow you to adjust the juicer based on the hardness of the fruit or vegetable you are juicing. This helps ensure that you get the most juice possible and reduces the amount left in the pulp.”--roxygirlie1021, Columbia, SC, Reviewer since 2009

“The fact that the juicer has five speeds is a nice feature that I couldn’t find on any other juicers when I was researching which one to buy.  The idea is that you want to use the lowest speed possible for highest juice yield. Best of all, the juice is yummy.”--sugarsmak, South Hadley, MA, Reviewer since 2009

“I am still amazed at the dryness of the pulp that you are left with after juicing, which indicates that the Breville juicer gets you as much juice as possible out of your fruits and vegetables. Prevents waste!”--pbgkel, Jacksonville, FL, Reviewer since 2011

Ease of cleaning

This juice lover decided to spend just a bit more on this model and has no regrets.

“All the components of the juicer clean amazingly easy, for the most part hot water and very little scrubbing is necessary.  The  brush that comes with the juicer works great on cleaning the screen and can be stored in the pulp basket in between juicings.  I have thoroughly enjoyed using this juicer and consider it to be one of my most valuable kitchen appliances.”--Blogger8dog8, Danville, KY, Reviewer since 2009

Stability / Durability

Several of the reviewers marvel at the fact that the juicer doesn’t walk around the counter, as blenders are inclined to do.

“This is a top-of-the-line product that has no problems when in use because it stays still with not a lot of noise when in use. You never have to worry about holding down the sides to make sure the back part won’t come off or that the machine will shake off the table.”Latonie6, Reviewer since 2013

So it’s powerful, easy to clean, relatively quiet, stable in operation — and elegant in its design and simplicity.

What to know

Reviewers say the only thing that can get a bit tedious is cleaning out the strainer basket. Small pieces of food get stuck in the fine mesh, but the machine comes with a brush that helps.

So while you could certainly find a juicer for less money, these reviewers contend that it won’t last as long or won’t seem as “sturdy and well built.”

One exception is the “Best Value” winner in the Viewpoints Reviewers’ Choice awards, the Hamilton Beach Big Mouth Pro Juice Extractor 67650 ($80). It’s a budget blender that gives the Breville stiff competition. Choose your weapon, and happy juicing!
