Cuisinart coffee maker: “Best Overall”

Cuisinart coffee maker

Cuisinart burst onto the kitchen scene in 1973 with debut of its food processor.

Reviewers say this Cuisinart coffee maker is a “must have” when both coffee and tea drinkers are in the house. Heck, some coffee drinkers admit they started drinking tea because of the convenience of getting hot water.  That may be the most obvious difference between this coffee maker and other models, but take a look at what else the Cuisinart Coffee Plus CHW-12 offers:

  • Self-clean function
  • Heater plate with high, medium, low settings
  • Brew pause (when you just can’t wait)
  • Blue backlit LCD with easy-to-read digital clock

Brew performance

Bells and whistles are nice, but an award-winning coffee maker first and foremost must make good coffee. No issues here – everyone loves the taste.

“This Cuisinart has the best tasting coffee ever. It has a charcoal water filter that works so good. We have hard water living up north in Michigan..We have had this machine that also heats water for tea for 3 months Have not had one bad cup of coffee yet. I love this machine and would recommend it to anyone.”butterfly3548, Flat Rock, MI, Reviewer since 2009

“Great coffee, as always it depends on what kind you buy, you buy cheap coffee it will taste like such. But for the expensive and moderately priced coffee my husband and I drink it has been amazing!”Argyleskin, Seattle, WA, Reviewer since 2011

“I like strong coffee so I use a lot of grounds. I have found that when it is down brewing, they are ALL wet (some of my old ones didn’t spray over the entire basket, just one spot )”--TiffanyWhite, Orlando, FL, Reviewer since 2012

The features of this Cuisinart model are unique, but it’s the taste of the coffee that most impresses reviewers.

Ease of use/Design

So while the design of this Cuisinart may be the key to making good coffee, the features that make it distinctive push it over the top. Some people say they never even read the operator’s manual because this Cuisinart coffee maker says many indicators that tell you what needs to be done.

“Whether you are making a pot of coffee right away, setting the timer, or using the hot water, the unit is very simple. I have programmed my morning coffee many times in a half awake haze the night before.”--CFRyzek, Reviewer since 2013

“I have MS and trouble with use of my hands and weakness. This is very easy for me to use. It seems like I am forever dropping things but the ergonomic handle on this pot makes hanging onto it a cinch. I have long been a fan of Cuisinart and while their products are a bit pricey, they are worth the investment as I have rarely found fault with them.”signsintime, Reviewer since 2013

What to know

About the only consistent complaint about this Cuisinart coffee maker is that it is “awkward” to refill the water.  ”The space above the machine needs to be clear in order to fill it easily since the machine is tall and somewhat bulky,” says one reviewer. ”You must pour over the tea side and filter basket,” adds another. Others mention that the hot water takes a bit longer to heat up than you might expect.

All-in-all, though, these are minor issues compared to the advantages in design and performance of the Cuisinart Coffee Plus 12-Cup Programmable Coffee Maker with Hot Water System CHW-12. And at $100, it also costs less that many other coffee makers you’ll find on the market with fewer functions.
