The Aerobie AeroPress Coffee and Espresso Maker 80R08 ($30) is a rare product that combines both stellar performance and low price. It wins both “Best Overall” and “Best Value” of the French press coffee makers in the Viewpoints Reviewers’ Choice awards. A New York reviewer calls it a “brilliant little gadget.”
The French press method of brewing coffee is decidedly low-tech. Coarse coffee grounds, a plunger and hot water are about all that’s required. But while the process is simple by design, the great French press coffee makers brew outstanding, rich coffee. On that score, the Aerobie Aeropress seems to be in a class by itself.
Aerobie: A double-winner
There are 360 coffee makers reviewed on Viewpoints. They come in all shapes and sizes – but they all create coffee in one of four ways: drip, single-cup, percalator or French press. While most French press coffee makers allow you to make a pot (albeit a small one), the Aerobie Aeropress makes a custom cup.
‘This little device allows you to customize coffee the way you want it because it only makes one cup at a time. No mess, no fuss and the perfect cup every time is exactly what it was designed to give you and it does just that. I only wish I had found out about it sooner because it totally changed the way I enjoy coffee and the occasional cup of espresso.”–therealjustin, Oneida, NY, Reviewer since 2010
It’s the perfect coffee maker for people who live alone and hate the taste of instant. The Aerobie also gets high marks for keeping the grounds in the pot and out of the cup.
Ease of use
VIDEO: According to the Aerobie website, the process takes “one minute from start to enjoy.”
“The Aeropress is a dead simple machine, basically composed of a tube & a plunger. You put a filter on the tube’s end, place it directly atop of a mug, add grounds & water, stir a bit, then slowly push the plunger through the tube. The result is a fast, rich cup of coffee that won’t disappoint. But the best is the cleanup-remove the filter & push the tube the rest of the way through. Out comes a little “puck” of your compressed grounds, right into the trash! Rinse off the tube & plunger & you’re done!”--brodiddley, Chicago, IL, Reviewer since 2010
Using water at the right temperature contributes to success. Aerobie recommends no hotter than 175° F. After savoring the delicious cup, the easy clean-up is one of the things many reviewers also mention in heaping praise on the Aerobie.
And then, there’s the price. For about $30 – or the cost of a few Starbucks with an extra shot – you have a coffee maker to call your own.
“I truly recommend this product to everyone. The coffee is wonderful, and so is the price! If you really want to save on your coffee, please do yourself a huge favor, and go out and purchase this. I almost guarantee you satisfaction, that’s how good this product is!” –PhoenixxxTears, Brea, CA, Reviewer since 2011
And a French press works without electricity, so it is definitely a “green” choice.
What to know
This is not a family coffee maker. And it does require filters. But it’s clearly an object of affection for those coffee lovers who’ve discovered the Aerobie Aeropress. For the price, we at Viewpoints don’t think you can beat the functionality. Or if you don’t care for coffee, you can always display it on one of your bookshelves. Either way, it’s a guaranteed conversation starter.
