The blender is a basic appliance of all kitchens, and just about anyone who cooks has heard of Vitamix. The Vitamix 5200 is the entry model in the Vitamix line ($449) and 2013 winner of the top blender award on Viewpoints.

Chosen as ‘Best Overall’ blender in the Viewpoints Reviewers’ Choice awards, the Vitamix 5200 is, without question, an exceptional product. In fact, hundreds of reviewers say it’s the best in all six ways we grade blenders on Viewpoints: blending power, versatility, ease of cleaning, ease of use, design and durability.  It’s the Viewpoints equivalent of the grand slam, and why it’s deserving of our highest award.

Vitamix 5200: ‘Best Overall’

Vitamix has been making blenders since the 1940′s and is a market leader in blending technology.

The Vitamix 5200 may be one of the most versatile appliances you’ll ever buy for your kitchen — and possibly your home. Reviewers say they “haven’t found anything it won’t do.” Vitamix claims to be able to “create every course of your home-cooked meal.” The reviews back up that bold promise.

“This is not your ordinary blender. I would not dream of paying so much money (if) it did not deliver great results … It does many things: blending, food processing, ice cream, soups. I have tried all of these things and very pleased.”mytoocents, Reviewer since 2008

“From icy drinks, to salsas to soup and nuts, this machine powers through, making you the number-one party house!”enfuegogrl, Reviewer since 2009

Blending power

The Vitamix 5200 has the same 2-peak HP motor as its pricier cousins, so there’s really no compelling reason to buy a more expensive model in the Vitamix line unless you are looking for special accessories or extra cookbooks. According to its website, the Vitamix 5200 has “laser-cut, stainless-steel blades measuring 3-in diameter to ensure a consistent blend every time.”

“This is an expensive product, but worth it. I make a smoothie every morning containing about 10 fruits, plus several dry ingredients. It blends it smoothly and FAST. Mercifully, the noise is minimal as I have tinnitus and can’t take loud noises.”–halilshine, Reviewer since 2007

“What I learned in science class is this: when you can put a lot of power into a small area, expect to be able to do what you want in that small area. The ability of the Vitamix to spin the blades and cut through whatever you put into the container, is going to guarantee that you can prepare the food as you wish. This is a bigger thing than you will realize, until you start using it.”ergo767, Reviewer since 2012

This reviewer also points out that one of the important things with food preparation is being able to break down the cell wall barriers and getting to the valuable nutrients inside. A high-speed blender does just this, and therefore, makes it easy for your body to take advantage of the nutrients in the food.

Ease of use

One of the benefits of the blending power is that the Vitamix 5200 is simple to use. It comes with a gourmet cookbook, but it seems a lot of people are content to make easy work out of trusted recipes, with the exception that they now have confidence that what they’re preparing is actually good for them.

“Pretty straight forward in use. Not complicated. My children can use it.”Podmom, Reviewer since 2007

For a touch of fun, the Vitamix 5200 comes in five colors, including red.

What to know

The people who aren’t impressed with the Vitamix make the point that it’s truly for the serious cook. In other words, it might be overkill to spend hundreds of dollars on any blender, let alone the Vitamix 5200, if all you plan to make are smoothies and milkshakes.  The blending noise also tends to surprise other cooks, likely depending on what you are used to.
