How to Choose a Baby Lotion for Sensitive Skin

Baby lotion reviews

The more ingredients in the lotion, the greater the chance of skin irritation.

Baby lotions are supposed to be formulated for delicate baby skin, though in reality many are scented to have that “baby smell.”

Baby lotion keeps baby skin moisturized, soft and smooth.  As part of a regular routine, lotion also helps massage and calm fussy babies.  When that infant skin is extra sensitive or prone to eczema, choosing a baby lotion can be a tough task.  Moms want a gentle lotion that isn’t going to cause the sensitive skin to break out in an irritating rash.

What to look for in a lotion for sensitive skin

Dermatologists first recommend eliminating fragrances and dyes from products – labeled hypoallergenic. You also want to look for thick lotions that absorb quickly.  These lotions work more efficiently keeping the skin moisturized and keep the skin clean.  In general, natural baby lotions such as California Baby and Burt’s Bees Baby Bee will cater to sensitive skin as they do not contain artificial chemical ingredients.

 A budget option

Sporting a slightly cheaper price tag and a high 85/100 review rating is the Johnson’s Natural Baby Lotion.  The allergen-free formula is listed as 98% natural and runs approximately $4 for a 9-ounce bottle.  Johnson’s Natural Baby Lotion moisturizes with a thick silky lotion almost as well as the more expensive brands.  The only thing many moms did not like about the Johnson’s Natural Baby Lotion is the scent.  Unlike other sweet baby lotions, Johnson’s Natural has a earthy, clay-like scent to it.

“It works great! made from vegetables? WOW! But it seriously is awesome! It absorbs almost immediately and creates like a soft cover over the skin that feels soooo smooth.” – Mylisa3, Reviewer since 2010

The best of the best

There are a variety of top-of-the-line baby lotions that are organic and natural and work nicely for sensitive skin.  Top of the charts, with high 98 out of 100 rating and a favorite of Viewpoints Blogger Reviews Panel, is the Aveeno brand.   Whether you are  moisturizing dry skin or soothing irritated skin, Aveeno makes the grade with its natural colloidal oatmeal blend which is free of fragrances and chemicals.  Though Aveeno comes with a hefty price tag, those who use it agree that it is wholeheartedly worth the cost.  While regular retail for Aveeno Baby is approximately $5 for an 8-ounce bottle, Aveeno Baby Daily Baby Lotion can be found online for a low as $2 for a 8-ounce bottle.

“This lotion does a wonderful job on my baby’s tender skin. It’s gentle formula is non greasy, goes on easily and dries quickly without leaving a sticky residue like some baby lotions.” – Kerrianntt, Reviewer since 2011

With sensitive skin, be prepared to pay a little more than the $2 per bottle for a regular scented baby lotion.  In the end, though, your baby will be saved from itchy, irritated skin which will make both baby and momma happy.  Hypoallergenic baby lotions are the key to keeping sensitive baby skin moisturized and protected from dry skin irritation and eczema rashes.
