ebates.com  —

A while back I wrote a glowing review about Lisa Carey's blog site, "Freebie Finds" which turned out to be a motherlode of good ideas, including something else to glow about -- Ebates.com.  It sounded too good to be true at first -- an effortless way to get rebates on purchases you would make anyway -- but this really does work.

I signed up for this but didn't actually use it for a while as I have gotten so accustomed to making my online purchases through MyPoints and besides I had cut back on what I shopped for this year.  As Christmas approached however, things began to pick up.  As is my usual practice, I was determined to use my Discover cashback for double value Mrs. Field's Cookies e-certificates but I was surprised to find that Mrs. Field's is no longer a part of MyPoints.  I taxied on over to Ebates.com and was again surprised to find that just joining up and making my first purchase was going to earn me $10!  Add in the rebate from what I paid for my Mrs. Field's orders (which was not too much because of the Discover cashback) plus a few holiday gifts purchased at Macy's (special 8% rebate promotion) and a special 6% rebate on an order from Drugstore.com -- all things I would have bought anyway -- and I already have earned $47.50 effortlessly and painlessly.  Later on, when I travel again I will also be able to get an Ebates rebate on my bill at the Comfort Inn and even a dollar back just for making my reservation on United.

Another thing I like is that the money is sent on a quarterly basis, thus avoiding a constant rash of itty-bitty checks to deposit.  (You can also have the money deposited into a PayPal account on a quarterly basis.)

I'm not giving up on MyPoints, but I'm certainly glad I have discovered Ebates.com too.  With the more than a thousand stores offering rebates through this wonderful site, Ebates.com is the cashback equivalent of breaking the bank at Monte Carlo!

Yah, ebates.com seems to be working out and hopefully all I will get from them is a CHECK EVERY NOW AND THEN! Thanks so much for reading my reviews, yours are great too. Hope you have a nice New Year's, Gigi, you deserve it!

Sounds like a great site. I am being introduced to so many places on the Internet as a result of reading reviews. ~Gigi

Check it out! www.bigcrumbs.com. I won't give you my referral link because I don't believe in that but you can save huge at many stores. And at eBay as well!

I get such a kick out of you, Patty -- I swear you're the first person who has ever mentioned "BIG CRUMBS" to me! It sounds intriguing!

I was just telling LoveisJoy that all these little things can add up to make a big difference. I'm glad it works out well with O.D. as I'm getting ready to make an order from them after Christmas.

I used this some years ago...when I had $$$. It works good in conjunction with Office Depot.

Oh my GOD, I didn't realize that you just wrote your message to me a few minutes ago! You must be staying up late (liike I usually do) but today I'm actually up EARLY because I've arranged or one of those postal carrier pick-ups and I have to go down and let the poor guy in because our buzzer lock is broken. They can buzz us but when we try to buzz back to unlock the front door for them, it won't work and we have to (SIGH) go down there and open the door ourselves. Of course, at this season of peace and good will, I dare not just leave the package in front of the building where it would undoubtedly be stolen. The package is already and the postage is paid for but I had to get up early to shower and get dressed because (AND THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT) it's really important to have CLOTHES ON when I go down to let the guy in! HAHA!

I was a little concerned when I was out to visit you last that maybe I should have been a better sport and tagged along with you when you went shopping. (Note I said SHOPPING which was quite a different thing than indiscriminate BUYING.) Some people really love the hands-on, walk-through experience of being in a store even though they may not buy a thing and there's nothing wrong with that if you enjoy that sensory input. I thought that sometimes you really wanted me to buddy up and come with you, which I maybe should have done instead of just waiting in the car like a dope. I did enjoy our little grocery expedition there and was able to find those tomato bouillion cubes which are NOT EASY TO FIND BY THE WAY. I'm glad you're going to get a little vacation. I have been told by other people who are self-employed that sometimes working for yourself is the hardest job to get away from. I know you sometimes visited Mary and Bill in the past -- now what do you guys do? Any plans aside from kicking back, which isn't a bad option especially after a big party like you had. Well, take care! (Incidentally, I have a horrible feeling I'm going to have a chance to get another e-bate -- alas, my well-used toaster just caved in yesterday!)

Are you worrying too much? When I can, I shop online. I actually prefer it to the stores -- especially now with the change in prices. There are some stores I won't even enter. I like the idea of the points sites. Tried one last night but couldn't get the final communication through. Will get to both of them later this week. My two-week vacation starts on Friday. Yippie!!

You know, Mel, I'm having second thoughts about whether this would be right for you. I think you enjoy the getting out there and shopping more than I do and all these things are more for online purchases. You seem to really be getting good deals by hitting the stores. With me, it's just the opposite, I miss a lot when I'm in a store and don't always get the best deal. I promise to go in and shop with you more the next time I come out. Sometimes I avoid shopping even more when I'm on a trip because I don't want extra things to bring home. You could show me a lot of pointers about store shopping, I bet.

You get ten bucks just for signing on and making the first purchase. Just go to ebates.com if you are ever interested. I've given up referring people to things because no one would ever EVER really try it because of my referral. I think they thought I was trying to get points or dollars or something by getting someone else to sign up. But I can recommend, can't I?

Once I got out of credit card debt years ago, I made it a point to use credit cards for almost everything -- even grocery shopping. I didn't really have to spend a whole lot to build up the old cash-back thing and -- more importantly -- my credit rating for whatever it's worth.

Hey, Cuz! Not to dispair, I have learned that there is no such thing as a purchase which is too little! All those little bitty dollar or two here or there adds up. And as for MyPoints, you can make a lot of points just by clicking through the e-mails, some of which are very interesting! As they say, "Rome wasn't built in a day!"

TunefulGal wrote on Dec 14, 2008 at 3:44AM

Ye gods, another one! This sounds better than mypoints, but they both might be kind of rich for my blood. I realize now that my Discover card site is a portal, too, but hardly anything there is in my price range. Thanks, cuz, for keeping me educated.
