I smoked tobacco cigarettes for 45 years. Every time I quit, I would get sick. What a coincidence! When I started doing some research, I learned that nicotine is very effective at warding off depression and anxiety, and also improves attention, concentration, visual memory, and hence performance. No wonder I felt so blue, so confused, like I was literally walking around in a fog when I abstained from nicotine.
I managed to stay totally off nicotine for 6 months, and kept waiting for the recovery that never came. Oh there were a few improvements in some things, but not in my thinking abilities. I kept making mistakes and having to redo my work. When my boss had a chat with my about my lack of productivity, I went back to the doctor and asked for treatment to fix my concentration and memory problems. She told me there was nothing she could do; I told her I had no choice but to start smoking again.
In the years since, as various nicotine replacement products became available, I tried them all. I managed to cut down on the number of cigarettes I smoked, but not to quit. Finally, the e-cigarette became available. It provides enough nicotine so that I can think straight and I have no cravings at all for tobacco. My wheezing is gone, and so is the coughing. My blood pressure is down. If e-cigarettes are taken off the market, I'll be forced to smoke tobacco again. There are many brands and models available. I use the NJOY NPRO.
