dog breed Yorkshire Terrier Review Summary

“If you are looking for a dog that will cuddle with you, sit on your lap, and feel more like a child than a puppy...then you are looking for a Yorkshire Terrier dog.” Smart, loyal, and allergy friendly -- reviewers love Yorkshire Terriers. As a dog that loves attention, your Yorkshire will want to be near you always, and loves to cuddle. These dogs are small, easy to transport, and do very well in small apartments or in cities. Reviewers at Viewpoints stress how great these small terriers do as family pets. At the same time, however, prospective dog owners should be wary, especially if they have small children. With great loyalty comes a big of aggression, and many have described this cuddly lap dog as aggressive when dealing with strangers. They are generally good with kids, but try to avoid roughhousing or they may get defensive. But despite their aggressions, Viewpoints members love their little pups and overall, the dog breed "Yorkshire Terrier" gets the thumbs up.

I currently own two yorkies and I absolutely love these little guys. They're very loyal, smart, and they don't shed. They are great with my kids and my kids adore them. I must say that yorkies require dedicated owners. Since they are prone to various health problems, they need an owner who is willing to shell out money on vet bills. My older yorkie (he is 8) requires a special diet and is on lifelong medications. Of course, not all yorkies are destined to have health problems but I think that is something all potential owners should consider. All in all, I love my yorkies and can't see myself… read full review »

I purchased my first Yorkshire Terrier in 1996 a year before my son was born.  My husband and I both had allegies and couldn't be around shedding animals.  I researced non shedding allergy frindly pets and Yorkies were on the list.  The breeder where I purchased my first Yorkie suggested going with the larger puppy in the litter.  I brought him home and named him Bubba.  He had a fantastic personality, was super smart, and didn't bother our allergies.  Bubba was phenominal with my kids and we all cried for days when he passed last summer at age 11.  While… read full review »

I grew up with an adorable Yorkie and would recommend the breed to anyone who wants a very devoted dog and can handle their fragility. They are quick to defend their "family," so it's a good idea to make sure they get to know anyone new as gently as possible. — There are only two real drawbacks with the breed: — 1) They are fragile. While they're pretty good with kids, you don't want them around anyone who wants to roughhouse with the dog. — 2) To meet the AKC standard their ears are clipped and their tails are docked. If your dog is "just" a pet, don't bother… read full review »

We had three Yorkies when I was growing up.  One that I can barely remember, and two when I was in school.  I love the little guys!  They are very smart and definitely loyal.  Ours also had a tendency to prefer one family member over another, but loved everyone.  Mine was named Shadow; because he was my shadow, following me around wherever I went.  He was my best friend!  We also had 2 cats and a Weimaraner.  All the animals got along wonderfully, even sleeping together in a big pile!  I don't have a Yorkie now, but would dearly love… read full review »

The Yorkshire Terrier Breed is a great pet for families of tweens, teens and adults.  I would not recommend them for younger children as they can be somewhat agressive when playing.  They don't shed which is a requirement in our household.  My daughter who is allergic to most environmental things has no problem with reactions to our yorkie.  They love to play and play aggressively which our teens love.  Our Yorkie is very lovable and became a great lab dog after about 9 months.  She tends to prefer one member of the family but will show affection to… read full review »

If you have never met or seen a Yorkie, then you are missing out.  These dogs are known for their personality.  For some that can be a problem, your Yorkie will have a mind of it's own.  They are very loving and affectionate dogs.  They also have a lot of energy. Weighing in around 5-6#, they are the perfect house dog.  They come in many colors or tans, browns, and blacks.  They often change colors at they get older, it's like having a new dog every few years.  They can be expensive, but are well worth the money.  Very good around children if trained… read full review »

Many people have always told me that yorkies are barkers. I got my first yorkie a year ago, and i love him to death. He never barks. He goes where ever i go. I have two small children, under the age of 2, and he does great with both. Sometimes my child likes to pull his hair and tail, and my yorkie has never tried to nip at him. I've always been a large breed lover, and i have just fell in love with the small breed. The only down fall is that he was very easy to potty train but was harder to train to sit, lay down and… read full review »

We got our Yorkshire terrier at 8 weeks and of course he started whining for the first few weeks. But that is to be expected. Now the only thing I always do when I walk into the house is lovingly shout 'Cookie!' He is adorable, freindly, easily trainable and has a Napoleon complex. He like attention, is smart and like to be next to fmaily all the time. Tell me how can you ay no to that sad face when you need to leave and he sits there with that sad look on his… read full review »

We have two yorkies and they are the best dogs with the best personalities of any dog breed that we have ever had.  They are friendly and love children.  They have never shown any agression.  They love to play and be cuddly.  They are VERY smart and will dance for treats.  They are like having little children.  They do require grooming but do not shed.  They travel… read full review »

Yorkshire Terriers are not only dogs, they are companions.  If you are looking for a dog that will cuddle with you, sit on your lap, and feel more like a child than a dog...then you are looking for a Yorkshire Terrier dog.  They do well in small places, like apartments. Plus, they don't shed and are very clean!!!  I'll never own another breed but a… read full review »

My sister and my niece each own a Yorkshire Terrier.  One is a male (Ozzie) and the other is a female (Gracie).  youYou need to research this breed before purchasing to know exactly what type of fur each Yorky will have.  Some have silky coats and some have more of a thick fluffy coat.  Neither one sheds much.  They both have wonderful personalities.  Although this breed is small, they are easy to transport and clean up… read full review »
