Did any of you ever see the movie Mystic Pizza that was filmed in Mystic, Connecticut? I went to the restaurant that was featured in that movie... and the pizza was truly amazing. That was about 15 years ago, so I don't know if the restaurant is even still there.
Yes it's still there. My grandparents didn't live far from Mystic, so we went there often, but I never had the pizza there.

That's great. It's a beautiful area (with all the large ships, etc.). I'd love to go back again... on a side note, some of the best clam chowder I've ever had was also in Mystic ;-)

I don't know about that.....my favorite place makes all his own dough, cheeses, sauces and grows his own spices. Maybe for the commercial kind it's trucked in.

I haven't had pizza in New York before, but the best pizza I've ever had was New York Style pizza. I can only assume is comes close to the real thing.

Unfortunately, I must have picked the wrong restaurant, the one and only time I was in Chicago. I always heard how incredible their pizza was. But, the one I ordered was not very impressive.

I'm a Chicago lad and I've never had pizza in NY, so I'm going to favor my hometown pizza. :) The thing is I prefer thin crust (though I love Giordano's stuffed) cut into squares not wedges.

Sausage and onion is my favorite topping combination.

The pizza that we have here at the Jersey Shore is pretty darn good. My understanding is that it is the same as NY pizza as the people just moved further south to here.

If you go to Vincent's please bring me back some rigatoni and sausage with hot sauce....please!!!! LOL!

I live a handful of towns south of you for the last 4 years, and I'm sorry, but you just can't compare the pizza here to the City. It's similar, but just not the same. I heard of a place in Barnegat that is supposed to have really good brick oven pizza but we haven't gotten up there yet.

The pizza that we have here at the Jersey Shore is pretty darn good. My understanding is that it is the same as NY pizza as the people just moved further south to here.

I cannot stand Domino's, Papa John's, or any frozen pizzas. To me, they just aren't real pizza. Pizza Hut's isn't either, but I like it as an entirely separate entity. I don't consider it to be good pizza but I do enjoy one of their deep-dish concoctions every few years.

If we aren't ordering in from an independent pizzeria, then I just make my own. Tonight we had a white pie topped with broccoli and swiss chard sauteed in garlic and olive oil. Yum!

There's a little place a couple blocks from where I work called Panteloene's that serves up the best pizza west of NYC.

I like pizza best when it's homemade, cooked on the grill. My favorite toppings are tomatoes, but I like just about every vegetable on it, except pineapple and banana peppers. I even like peanut butter on it occassionally! (Don't knock it til you try it!)

I once liked Papa John's and Pizza hut pizza but once I tried a pizza from this restaurant called Bruno's I fell in love and just can't go back. It's supposed to be the original Italian pizza cooked in a brick oven fresh ingredients and pizza crust. The crust I enjoy the most, its thin with a fairly thick edge of crust and the sauce is really good and I enjoy all the toppings my favorite is onion, mushroom, ham, sausage and cheese. m..m..m..yum.

VINCENT'S!!! Now I'm really drooling....love the hot sauce with the calamari and rigatoni and sausage! And top it all off with some CANNOLI'S!!!!! You just did me in with Zeppole's! I love those greasy little things. Best place for them used to be at the San Gennaro Feast. They also used to have fried calzones. So good!

I love "Red Brick Pizza". I love the pepperoni with mushrooms or double pepperoni, depending on my taste buds. I also love the cheese breadsticks. It is expensive but for me, it is so worth it. The pizza doesn't make me feel bloated, heavy and uncomfortable like other pizza's I've eaten before.

My two favorite pizzas are not found on the US or even in Italy. One is Pizza Napolitana that I ate regularly when I spent time in Toulouse, France. It was a thin crisp crust with a tomato based sauce, cheese, and topped with anchovies and capers.

The other I only had a couple of times while I was in a little resort town in the Bavarian country of Germany. The town was Chiemsee and was on lake Chiem. It was just a Supremo Pizza with thick chewy crust and a lot of different meats and veggies on it. The cheese covered the toppings, including whole black olives with the pits still in them. It was an adventure not chipping a tooth, but the blend of tastes was wonderful.

My best ever US Piizza you can't get anymore. It was made at a little place in Redondo Beach, cA called Joey Altobelli's deli. Joey claimed to be a cousin of Joe Altabelli, a major league baseball player and later manager of some teams. Joey had brought his mother over from the Old Country. She had insisted he bring her old brick oven as well. Every morning she arose early and made the sauce.. She made the dough and Joey threw it. He only had pepperoni or Joey's special with a couple of meats, a couple of vegetables, and anchovies,. We always had the special. From first bite to last, the juices ran, mingled with the saliva from the wonderful taste and smell of this import form Italy.

YOU KNOW HOW I FEEL!!! LOL:) I haven't been over that way in a while. If it's on Bath Avenue, yes it is still there. I looked it up. At least I'm within a few hours drive and have to go to the City often, so I can get my fix.

I grew up in Bushwick when I was younger, then as a teenager we moved to Bensonhurst, the Bath Beach area off of 20th Ave and then on 68th St. off of 18th Ave. Too funny about the hubby...I say...hold on to that man...any guy that's willing to travel just for a pizza is a keeper to me LOL!

Papa Johns does offer wheat crust pizza and no extra charge. You can substitute it for any other crust.

My personal favorite is deep dish, but bad for me, very very bad.

Love my own personal homemade bbq chicken pizza

ham and pineapple

and everything but mushrooms

one place and one place only that i know makes an amazing buffalo wild wing pizza -- OMG heaven, two of my favorite bar foods in one dish. Doesn't get better than that -- side a pitcher of beer. Yeah, I am a classy kinda gal! But only when I have to be.

I am a "thick" crust kinda gal and it's got to be buttery. As for my toppings:

I just don't care for deep dish at all. I guess my alternative is sicilian. There are places that make wheat pies, but they may be far and few.

We had pizza tonight too! Reading about everyone's favorite did me in...couldn't resist! Only cheese on top:)

My husband's favorite toppings are bacon and onions, but he can't have the bacon because he is a cardiac patient (not good for him). I tried it once and it wasn't bad, but the bacon makes it really salty and oily.

I have a new favorite and it's not traditional at all. We buy those little ceaser pizza kits every year from parents of school kids, and last year we bought Wheat Crust pizza kits. They were AWESOME! I now love the wheat crust and this year just ordered another pack. Why can't real pizza places offer wheat crust? It's healthy and it gives a different taste.

I am back and forth about whether I like deep dish or thin crust overall. Some days I'm in the mood for lots of carbs and cheese, other days I'm in the mood for pizza but trying to cut down on the fat so I choose thin. I'm one of those weird people that really can't pick a favorite pizza b/c I just love pizza be it frozen, delivery, from a fancy restaurant or even a make-it-yourself!

As for toppings - cheese, cheese and more cheese, and some sauce. That's it for me!

I make mine as well--have pix to prove it in my review on a cookbook that I posted earlier. People are welcome to look at the pictures--gluten free cooking can be tasty and look yummy too.

It's hard to beat NY for Italian food, but the best pizza I ever had was in Chicago. It was a deep dish - took about 45 minutes for them to make it. All the ingredients were very fresh tasting, it was piping hot, and had all the right spices (but not too much).

We loved the pizza at this Italian restaurant owned by an old Italian couple. He used to hand toss the crust in front of you and always overloaded the toppings. We loved just straight up pepperoni, Italian sausage and extra cheese. The couple used to yell at each other in Italian all the time. They closed last year when they retired and we miss that place so much.

I love a thick or hand-tossed crust (but not stuffed crust with cheese on edge--save that for the top for me!)

Favorite toppings:

barbecue chicken and pineapple with mozzarella and cheddar

I'm a Brooklyn girl too! What part are you from? The pizza place I was talking about is on Avenue J and East 14th Street. I have to go to Manhattan on the 8th. My husband wants to come with me just so he can stop on the way home and get a pizza there. I'll overnight you one!!

I live in New York and can vouch for it being the best. My favorite crust is one that is hand tossed and not too thin. As for toppings it depends on my mood. I love straight extra cheese and black olive pizza, white pizzas with spinach or broccoli, and of course I can always eat one fully loaded. The only one I don't care for is anchovy. Coming from New York, I believe the best pizza is made here. I know that statement is loaded! There are so many different regional variations; Chicago Deep Dish, New Haven Style, Midwest Style, Southern Style, Bar Pizza, California Style, etc.

My old local corner pizzeria has recently been named as one of the top three in the country by Bon Apetit for best pizza. This is a very hard earned and well deserved title for the owner who is now in his 70's. His homemade pizza is truly a classic, and he is still making pies daily.

I have had many different types and feel there are none that match my favorite. I prefer a thin crust with a light sauce, homemade buffalo mozzarella, fresh basil and cooked in a brick oven. Not to say a gas fired oven using the same ingredients can't produce a great pie...it surely can. Let's not forget about the crusty sicilian pizza....ugh! I'm getting hungry! It's thicker crust and square shape put it in a class all by itself.

What's your favorite variation or style of pizza?
