What is the worst movie you ever saw?

I've heard "Lost in Translation" maligned as a bad film, and I'll admit it is a ponderingly slow movie, but the worst film? The worst film for me would be "Howard the Duck" I watched it again the other day and realized my first impression was correct. But, the fact that I actually watched it a second time makes me realize how much I love all movies, good or bad. The awful ones are even fun---to make fun of! A friend of mine worked on one of the worst movies I had ever seen, "Airport 75" and I think I hurt his feelings that I thought it unbearably awful. Oh well.

For me the worst movie I ever went to was the "Crying Camel". A docudrama that I begged my friend to see with me. She still hasn't let me forget after all these years. But, there was the "Jackass" movie she dragged me to that more than made up for my faux-pas.

Caveman is definitely one of the worst I saw it as a teenager at a drive-in. The only memories I have of this movie is how bad it was. Guys likes the girls in cave dewelling attire other than that it was a bomb.

Hi! I really liked Twelve Monkeys and especially Brad Pitt's role! Dh and I watched this awful horror movie called Truth or Dare that rates as the worst movie I've ever seen. Also I'd have to say Out Of The Blue which had Dennis Hopper in it. Several people die in the film and it's so terrible that you're glad that they did. It was impossible to care for anyone in the film.

Here's what too many people don't get -- that the world would be a pretty dull place and history wouldn't have been much of a story at all if everybody felt the same way about everything. Okay, what if everybody loved the same movies and hated everything else? What if? That would mean that the folks in Hollywood would just keep grinding out those same small bunch of movies over and OVER. (Of course, sometimes it seems like they are doing that ANYWAY but ...) Viva la difference -- if everybody bet on the same horse, we wouldn't have much of a horse race!

The most awful movie ever created was Freddy got Fingered. My cousin made me sit through an hour of it swearing it got better. It was completely pointless, senseless and just plain dumb. It was right up there with "Dude where's my car" another of my cousin's picks :(

This is an easy one. My brother asked me to watch this movie with him called the Bubble Boy. I had never heard of the movie, but I figured why not. It starred the actor Jake Gyllenhaal whom I had heard of before so I figured it can't be that bad. Goodness was I ever wrong. From the first couple of minutes into the movie until the end(yes I was forced to watch it until the end with the promise that it was going to get better) it was one idiotic scene after another. There was nothing at all funny about this movie. It was utterly rediculious & a total waste of time.

My vote for Worst.Movies.Ever? A friend dragged me to see Highlander III: The Sorcerer. Let's just say we walked out halfway through the movie and never looked back. And Battlefield Earth? Fortunately, I saw it on cable. Unfortunately, the movie is vomit-inducing in more ways than one. I don't think I could even sit through an MST3K version of either movie, they're both that bad.

Count me in as a fan of What About Bob? I love that movie. I do, however, find most comedies really disappointing, because most of them can't sustain the funny. The Wedding Crashers was a movie that could have been funny, and should have been really funny, but it relied on one joke that was told within the first five minutes of the movie. After that, it was just awful.

I stopped going to movies regularly back in college which would be 1996-2000. I was so disappointed with what I was seeing, that I finally gave up on those slick trailers and commercials. Since then I've only seen 2 movies in the theater: Passion of the Christ and LOTR 3.
As for horrible movies, I thought Lost In Translation totally stunk, as did the newest version of Pride and Prejudice with Kiera Knightley. That is based on my extremely small sampling of recent films, though.

How funny...I loved Bill Murray in Ghostbusters but that's all I can think of. How can you not love Adam Sandler?? LOL

I think Bill Murray was perfect in Groundhog Day, which also happens to be a darn good movie. Otherwise, he doesn't do much for me.

I thought I had shot my wad but I can't resist adding this one (although I think it may have been made for television) -- the COLOR remake of "Night of the Hunter" with Richard Chamberlain taking the part that made Robert Mitchum famous. It was a disgrace to both Chamberlain and Mitchum who are both among my favorite actors. If you missed seeing this remake the one time it was shown, you're lucky!

Surely Grease 2 is a masterpiece in comparison to Jaws 4: The Revenge. There are lots of truly inane sequels to hit movies, but that one is one of the worst.

I have seen so many movies over the years, that its not so easy to pick out one that is worse than the worst. There are many out there that were just horrible, un-entertaining, or just not funny. Discounting made-for-tv movies and films made simply for festivals by college students would only be fair. After that, Surviving Christmas, Napoleon Dynamite, Grease 2, Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, Ballistic, Chill Factor, Alexander, All the Leprechaun movies, Christmas with the Kranks, Into The Blue, Catwoman, Jason X, Batman & Robin, and The Adventures of Pluto Nash realy sit at the top of my lists of worst.

I think The Blair Witch Project deserves some slack. That thing was made with like NO budget, and it was actually better than some high-budget films I've seen, in terms of creating an atmosphere. And to Steve 9631 - I would never consider anyone sick or messed up just because they have a different take on movies than I do. I think there's no point in being apologetic for one's own tastes because, really, you're the only one you have to please when you pay to see a movie. There are plenty of movies named in this thread which I really enjoyed, and I make no apology.

I met a guy who worked on the set of the Blair Witch Project (when I was at Universal Studios working for RollerJam of all things) who told me the entire thing was scripted and none of it was as it seemed. Jeeze, no kidding.

I saw Blair Witch Project at the movie theater. My cousin scared the heck out of me when I watching the movie. She tapped my shoulder and I screamed. I ran out of the theater and would not go back in. I never saw the complete movie and I do not think I will.

The Blair Witch Project gets my vote for the worst movie of all time. It wasn't scary, well written, or even remotely logical. To make matters worse I couldn't wait for the main character, (the one your supposed to relate to in the film), to get oft so you wouldn't have to listen to her anymore.

As far as a comment from above from Telpher in regards to the movie "Crash", the sick one, not the Oscar one, I kinda liked it in a real twisted way. I know that's bad, and if psychological testing was done on anyone who liked this movie, they would probably be medicated and watched closely, but I can't help it. I thought it was kinda cool.

Since this seems like a heated debate, I suppose I'll throw my 2 cents in.

I've seen thousands of movies (literally, sad right?), and usually movies that everyone say are bad, I end up enjoying in some way. I always try to find the good in movies, and look past the bad. So with that said, I've got 3 movies that I almost couldn't sit through.

1. Premonition starring Sandra Bullock. It is the worst movie ever. So confusing, and the plot was terrible (basically stolen from another movie). Not to mention numerous plot holes. If you want a more in depth answer as to why, read my review: http://www.viewpoints.com/Premonition-review-25ca0

2. Going Overboard starring Adam Sandler. Imagine if Adam Sandler had no acting talent, not a single humorous bone in his body, and was filming his own movie with no script or direction. Can you see it? If you can't, watch Going Overboard and you will. Barely any plot, ridiculous dialogue, and terribly shot scenes where Adam Sandler talks to the camera every 5 minutes. -.-

3. Black Sheep. Not the hilariously well done film by the late great Chris Farley and the decently funny David Spade. I'm talking about the horrendous disaster of a movie that came from New Zealand about a bunch of killer sheep. Thats right, killer sheep. I know this movie is meant to be viewed as a spoof movie but, the fact remains, it was terrible. There was basically no music throughout the entire movie, which made it bland and unexciting. The audio in general was low quality. The sheep that were attacking people looked extremely hokey and, for the most part, basically looked like a flock of sheep running around. There is only one semi funny part and its at the very end. I'd like that hour and a half of my life back please.

For the record, I loved Waiting (I work in a restaurant and its basically that movie minus the spitting in food), 12 Monkeys, Napolean Dynamite, Beetlejuice, and 8MM (I'm into the whole "dark and twisted, omg thats gruesome" thing). But we all have our opinions. ; ]

Funny how varied our tastes can be. Magnolia and Boogie Nights are among my favorite movies of all time, and I can watch them over and over again. I also enjoyed 12 Monkeys, and found Napoleon Dynamite to be a howl. On the other hand, I just remembered one of the worst movies, ever. It's called Crash. Not the big blockbuster with Terrence Howard and Matt Dillon, etc. I'm taking about an older movie...from the late 90s, with James Spader and Holly Hunter. It's about people who have a creepy fetish involving violent car accidents. I rented it when it first came out, not knowing the subject matter. And then I watched it and almost threw up...and I am the furthest thing from a prude. It's just a really awful, creepy movie. Switching channels two nights ago, my partner came accross it and I yelled, "Quick! Change it! that movie is pure evil!"

Another dumb movie is Napolean Dynamite. This was a terrible movie and every kid person I talk to thinks it's Gods gift to mankind. I was squinting through the whole movie with my "what-the-heck" face. I only laughed once and that's when some kid fell over a fence. Dumb.

The acting is worse than some I've seen in grade school holiday stage plays. The lighting is almost as bad as an 80's home movie on VHS. The sets are fake looking. Even the hotel they are in looks bad. The sound doesn't always match the actions. The scenes are not edited in such a way as to help tell the story (such as it is) very well. The story itself is lame and needed more rewrites. Let's see.. what else is there? Oh yeah. While there are actresses in it who are dressed a bit skimply (nothing dirty though really just a few outfits that look like night gowns) the actresses themselves are not very pretty. The monster isn't scary, just weird looking.

I had just gotten out of college in 1996. I think there have always been bad movies. I've watched lots of "classic" movies and while there are excellent ones, there are terrible ones too from every era. Just watch Turner Classic Movies for a day or two and you'll see what I mean. "Classic" just means "old" not necessarily "great".

I've really enjoyed reading these posts. Some of this stuff was really funny. I must say that I am fond of a lot of movies including a lot of the new ones but one thing that I never pay attention to is how a movie is rated by the critics or user ratings. My understanding is that the remake of "The Manchurian Candidate" was widely acclaimed but, as far as I'm concerned, it just cannot compare with the original. But, that's what makes movies entertaining. It would be a pretty boring arena if everybody liked the same thing and they just kept on making the same thing.
Thanks for all your input, everybody -- I respected and enjoyed it all!

Oh, and as far as movies that I own on DvD go, the absolute worst is Anna Nicole Exposed: Her Fantasies Revealed.

After the first five minutes, we went to the ticket counter and they let us see Apollo 13 instead. The people who worked at the theater said we weren't the only ones to walk out of that one.

Worst anime I ever saw likely belongs to a title called 'Debutante Detective Corps' which involved four high school girls in a private all girl school who had a mercenary group after them that they had to defeat. Yes, it is as stupid as it sounds and yes, it made my head hurt to watch it. On one particular mailing list I belong to we had an inside joke going where if anyone ever broke one of the rules of the list they were to be disciplined by having to watch this title. hehe

The other worst film I ever saw [actually it was so bad we didn't finish it] was an early 1990s movie called The Pickle. An employee of the video store recommended it. It was 100% awful!

Wow, you're right... Punch Drunk Love was a truly awful movie. In fact, most Adam Sandler movies are pretty awful, with the exceptions of The Wedding Singer and 50 First Dates. Those were watchable.

I also couldn't figure out the critical acclaim for Lost in Translation. One of the all-time classic stinkers was The Clansman, starring Richard Burton and OJ Simpson. I saw it and it was amateurish and just plain terrible.

I never really understood the hoopla over many of Stanley Kubrick's films, such as 2001: A Space Odyssey. Although there are many pretty visuals and some interesting scenes, the overall film leaves a strong "Huh?" in my brain.

Actually, I loved 12 Monkeys! But then, I'm a very strange man. Just ask the kids. They'll tell ya! That movie is pretty highly rated by critics and it rated 87% on Rottentomatoes.com tomato meter. But, that's why they have a lot of different kind of movies, because there are different people out there! (and man, I'm as different as they come!). For me, the worst movie ever, and I'm talking the dregs of moviedom, was a little classic starring Chris Elliot called, Cabin Boy. the only good thing about it was a 2 minute cameo by David Letterman and I bet if you ask him, of the two, the better experience was the time he hosted the Oscars. Pretty much unwatchable.

Napolean Dynomite - I didn't get it and wouldn't finish it! But to be honest I watched it a second time with a friend when we were in a giggly mood and I did find it sort of funny that time. However, I will never agree that it is hilarious like my friends tell me it is.
Skeleton Key - I reviewed this one on here already but basically I thought it was not thrilling at all and a total waste of time.
Lifetime - While I've seen some lifetime movies that drew me in, I've seen quite a few that I couldn't get past 30 mins before flipping the channel.
Waiting - People tell me that you have to be a waiter to understand this and find it funny - I disagree. This movie was DUMB and I usually laugh at a lot of DUMB movies so for people to tell me that if I was a waitress I'd laugh, I can't believe that. Besides, my husband has never worked in an office, yet he finds "Office Space" to be hilarious. A good movie should be funny to everyone, not just those who can relate.

I'm not so picky about movies overall and there are not many that I won't finish. A lot of movies get 3 stars from me but it's very rare I'd go as far as 1 star or saying "don't watch this". I can usually find some good in every film I watch.

BTW You'll probably be surprised to see that Twelve Monkey's has the following stats on IMDB:

I'm not sure how many movies I've seen/reviewed in my age-of-reasoning life; I have been going to the movies or watched them on TV since I was a kid, and I've been a film reviewer since I was 17, so I imagine I've seen at least several hundred.

I'm perhaps a bit more forgiving of modern movies than some of my esteemed colleagues here and elsewhere, but I do think that really great movies are somewhat the exception rather than the rule. This is true of today's crop of movies as it is of the Golden Age of Hollywood, at least from my perspective.

The absolutely worst movie I've watched at the movies is John Derek's Bolero, a silly pseudo-erotic film made in 1984 featuring the writer-director's wife Bo. Not only is it dumb (12 Monkeys seems almost like Shakespeare in comparison), but it's not interesting even in the erotic aspects.

On TV I've watched many bad flicks, but right now Bolero is the most dreadful bit of cinematic dross that I can bring myself to mention here.

Idiocracy... quite possibly the MOST idiot movie of all time. THe premise, idiot people take over the world by pure population, consumerism convinces people that WATER is bad for your and energy drinks good, time traveling solider luke wilson saves the world . . for all the good it will do with so many people who can't even from one coherent thought that does not pertain to sex.

I started watching "Saving Silverman" the other day and couldn't finish it. Some people enjoy that "Porky's" type of humor but it's just too stupid for me.

It's pretty hard to say for true because I tend to forget something that is that unpleasant. But I will offer this: The movies today are FAR WORSE than they used to be in terms of plot, acting, direction, and editing.

I've reviewed probably over 1,000 movies to date and seen probably 3 or 4 times that many which weren't worth telling about. So I think the ratio is 3 or 4 to 1. If you watch five movies, you will probably see 1 good one by my arithmetic. ;>

Older ones from the 1960s and back will be better than new ones.

I notice that there has been a very interesting thread started about movies which people really care about and would like to see discussed and reviewed more. Well, I'm starting another subject -- what are the WORST movies (in your opinion) which you ever saw.

First a bit of background -- I wasted I don't know how long in the wee small hours of last night (or early this morning) on a film which was so tedious and confusing that I finally did something I have never done before with a movie -- didn't bother to watch the end of it. I have no intention of watching the end of it either even though it is there in my "Saved" category in "On Demand" (thank God, I didn't pay for it -- it was a freebie!)

This is a movie which I never heard of before, apparently for good reason. "Twelve Monkeys" was IMO a waste of three of my favorite actors -- Bruce Willis, Madeline Stowe, and Brad Pitt -- and one plot based on a premise which should have shown promise. This was a 1995 film (apparently) and the general idea was that in 1996, a worldwide pandemic would wipe out five gazillion people. Bruce Willis was (apparently) a prisoner from the far future who had a chance to win a pardon by traveling back through time in order to do something or other to avert this catastrophe. Madeline Stowe was wasted in the part of a psychiatrist who was kidnapped by Willis for some reason or other and who thought he was crazy at first. Brad Pitt was wasted in the part of someone who was WHATEVER. I couldn't figure that out at all and by the time I gave up on that, I was done with the film for good.

I should add that for a time-travel junkie like me, giving up on this film was a real thumbs-down of the first order. Another annoying point about this film was that whatever printing appeared on the screen which was meant for the moviegoer to read was in bright neon "fuzzy" colors which meant that it might have been legible on the big screen but not on my living room one, even though I have an excellent HD picture. The film might have been better if I could have read some of that information.

I'm taking a wild guess here but I'm betting that most of you have never heard of "Twelve Monkeys" with good reason. To those of you who haven't watched it yet, my advice is to keep up the good work! If ever there was a good reason for a pandemic to strike, it would be to wipe out whoever thought this clunker up or produced it. Like many people, I love movies and I rather resent that this wasn't respected more by whoever produced this film, especially since people must have trustfully paid money to see it in theatres originally!). Being tempted to waste time on a movie I couldn't even finish watching was to me a real betrayal.
