I am horrified! I have 2 girls and this is scary. If i saw these in the store i would go to the manager and tell them how disgusting and inapropriate it was and i would tell my friends to go the store and do the same. Maybe boycott it. Who would buy that unless as a joke (which is not funny).

I have a feeling I'm repeating myself but to me the really obscene thing is those awful kiddie beauty pageants. I remember when children's beauty contests were innocent, sweet things and now the kids are just prancinc around in the most tasteless stuff, it just looks terrible. The poor kids.

Wow, what is going on these days? Manufacturers are obviously making what people buy so I blame PARENTS for even considering buying their young (even pre teen) children adult type clothing. THONGS? Any parent who thinks it's right to dress their 2 or 3 or 10 year old in thongs needs to have their head examined.

Yeah it is sick, but apparently there are parents dumb enough to go for it. Just last year I heard there was a "stripper dancer" pole for children ages 3-5 that was taken off the shelves of many stores. I thought just like you---WTH?? You mean parents really ENCOURAGE their kids to be strippers when they grow up? Apparently this was quite a getup and came with tassels! DOH!

Well, you gotta aspire to be SOMETHING RIGHT???

I think the clothing options of my "bar nights" had a lot to do with parental influence too. At 19, heck even now at 28 - My mom would NEVER let me leave the house with a tang top and skirt in the dead of winter, simply because it was freezing out. Whereas my friends parents never said a word as they walked out with this stuff in 5 degree weather. I think I was usually the only one with a scarf and gloves too - I'm not nuts!

As for elementry school, we didn't get that in depth back then. In grade school it was more basic information. We had that video in HS :P and most of us scribbled the whole time and avoided looking at it completely - just not something I ever want to see!!! I don't really know why they think you need to see it in order to learn, but I guess it works for some ppl. However, with the way times are changing, I'd wonder what they will teach in grade school now since kids are learning about these things earlier and earlier.

I think it's funny you mention the girls going out in tank tops and short skirts when it's bitter cold out. I was at a bar a few weeks ago and my friends and I couldn't stop laughing at the girls who were running to catch cabs in -20 degree temps... all while wearing jeans, heels and teeny tops. IT'S WINTER... IN CHICAGO. Sorry, but beauty isn't worth get hypothermia for. LOL.

Wildcatkatie, whatever works for you should probably be good for your kids - you sound like you got your head on straight :) I personally never got "the talk" persay. I think a kid will always be embarrased about it, no matter how you approach it just because it is such a personal thing to talk about. However I did have people come into our school to talk about that kind of stuff which probably is why my parents didn't need to say much

I don't know exactly what I will do with my kids but I hope they still have people going to schools to talk about it. I had a person in middle school and then the whole "health" class in high school. I think kids are more likely to soak it in if someone comes in and tells them the statistics of aids and stuff like that.

cmohr I think u hit the nail on the head. GIrls need to be raised to think for themselves and to know that boys are not the most important thing in life! I can teach my girls (if I have any) from my own experience.... I dressed covered up all my life but I still think I look cute. My goal in life is to look cute - not "sexy". And I think it's a good way to be.

I never really got the "sex talk." I watched my older sister get pregnant at 19 and I watched what she went through and that was enough of a sex education for me. That's why I waited. Yes, "sex talk" needs to start in the home, but it's more than that.

We left some links on the cause at FB to causes to premote Self-Esteem, The Dove Campaign. The reason being is the discussion in that cause, we got to thinking that who is really responsible? The fashion designers or parents? The more we got talking, the more we came to realize that we should premoting personal respect with young girls.

I was watching "The View" this morning. Whoopi said something that goes along with this. It was with regard to Rihanna being beaten, but she mentioned that girls need to be taught "to be independent." They also need to be taught to respect themselves so that they have the confidence to not need attachments and to respect their bodies.

We need to teach our girls that they can do for themselves and that they don't need to dress sexy to be confident. I honestly don't understand how wearing a thong or sexy outfits make women feel confident. The truth is, if a woman is confident, that woman knows she doesn't need to bare skin to show it.

Yes, stopping the sexualization of young girls starts with making them confident and giving them self-esteem, but the purpose of trying to ban the "prosti-tot" trend is not to set blame, it's to protect the girls who's parents are putting them in danger by letting them wear such items. Security is working on stopping pedophilia, but we need to protect kids any way we can from our end by not encouraging these pedophiles with the "prosti-tot" wear.

I don't think parents are afraid, but I can see how parents might get nervous or uncertain talking to their kids about tough subjects.

My parents weren't exactly thrilled to give me The Speech when I first started dating in middle school. Maybe if I'd asked to wear a thong under my khakis so I didn't get weird pantylines (versus coming home and announcing, "Ben just asked me out on a date!") my parents would have been relieved to talk to me versus freaked out that a guy wanted to take me out. Underwear seems easier to talk about than hormonal boys' behavior... but that's just me.

Any way, that's my opinion. I like what Katrena said and hope that when I'm a parent I can adopt her approach. I don't think embarassment is the way to go... I don't like being embarassed, so I doubt my kids would either! My parents always told me "honesty is the best policy!" :)

I'll put my 2-cents worth in on this subject about speaking with children about the tough subjects. Children typically have questions about the world around them. Smaller children might not want or need all the details, but if we are open and honest in speaking with them when they are young, I think they might be more likely to come to us when they are older. There are a lot of good books out there about breaching tough subjects with children. If we as parents ignore issues, they usually don't go away, but usually the kids will educate themselves in other ways.

When adults feel that children must be "protected" from the big topics, it can be pretty hard on the child. Take, for example, the Mom that told her son that his Dad had a cold when he was actually getting a bone marrow transplant for cancer and died. I've helped to prepare many children to see a dying parent before they enter the room, and if they want to see their parent, then we help to make that experience the best it can be under the circumstances.

For me, underwear is not a really big deal--I think it is a personal preference. However, how women see themselves, present themselves, and are willing to be treated by others--that's a subject that I particularly want to speak with my daughters as the opportunities arise.

I agree. You don't NEED to have thongs on the market to talk to your kids about sex, but it might be another way to start the conversation or make parents feel more comfortable discussing it. I'm not sure how I'll explain sex to my kids when I have them, but I'd much rather explain it to them after they see a thong at Victoria's Secret then after they see something on TV!

I was just thinking about it more. There probably were a lot of negative things around me as I grew up (Madonna could count as one). Now that I think about it - when I see parents on Maury or on the news with their uncontrolable child, it is as if the parents are giving up and giving in to the pressures of the world.

Instead of the children being peer pressured to dress sexy - the parents are being peer pressured to just accept this! Parents who don't give up will (usually) have kids who follow the rules, dress appropriately and hopefully stay out of major trouble. However many parents seem to have given up, accepting sexy clothing for 15 year olds as "the norm". That is what is sad! Parents who buy these thongs are essentially giving in to the peer pressure of society.

One of these days, I might be compelled to write an article too! All this conversation has got me thinking :)

lilsquibb, that's definitely not the way it was when I was growing up! Which is probably why I am still pretty conservative today in my clothing choices. My mom STILL will make comments if she thinks something is too tight or too short or too low cut and I'm 28! Real parents never stop trying to teach their children :-D

cmohr, great article. I agree many comedy shows will make fun of something as a way of showing just how WRONG it is. My biggest problem with this whole trend is that someone even designed the clothes for young girls. If a 15 yr old was sneaking off in her mom's thongs and sexy clothes, that would be different... but if they are actually making and marketing these clothes for young girls - that's just wrong. When my younger cousins came to visit years ago I remember thinking how short their skirts were! My mom said so too. They had shorts connected to them but still, people don't always realize those tiny skirts have shorts underneath them, they are still way short.

If you think about it, it's not just girls we have to worry about. Boys now-a-days just love to show off their boxers! I don't get that at all but there are actually laws being passed to stop it because that is how bad the trend is getting.

lisa, good article as well. Those terms are in young people's vocab more and more now-a-days and I can forsee them being outlawed as swear words if that keeps up. Kids have a lot to deal with now with everyone thinking they should be doing things younger and younger, I just hope I can teach my kids to ignore the peer pressure. True friends won't pressure you!

I came across this thread and just had to participate despite the fact I'm not a parent and won't be one for a long time.

I know that when I have children I won't buy them thongs until their teen years, but there might be parents who truly believe purchasing these items for their kids will teach them to be self-confident and respectful of their bodies versus "slutty." Maybe the solution isn't banning these products but rather it's proper education about body image and sexuality.

I took a course my senior year in college called Family Communication & Behavior. It was by far one of my favorite and most educational courses. We spent an entire week discussing sexuality and the new generation of "prostitots," etc etc. I, for one, believe that open communication about sex and body image will solve a family's problems - and we learned through studies that that is the case! Bye-bye teen pregnancy and sex at 15. That's why I think abstinence-only education is silly, but that's a convo for another day.

So, maybe toddler thongs are getting the sex conversation started earlier rather than later and preventing problems down the road? You don't have to buy them, but if your kid sees them on the shelves it might be better to address the situation versus exclaiming, "You slut! How dare you pick up that package!" They'll probably just be more curious about what a thong is and get misinformed from their friends.

Then again, what do I know? I don't have kids. :)

I touch on some of the issues we have here. At one point I mention, that the writers of The Simpsons and The King of the Hill, were using comedy to bring awareness that this is wrong. What's sick as that someone actually took their attempt to bring awareness to the problem to make a perverted profit. My ballet instructor in college tried to encourage me to wear thongs--said it would help with the panty line ordeal that we dancers had when in leotards or full costume. I tried them once and hated the feel of dental floss in my butt. Fast forward a few years later. A cousin visiting from VA buys me some thongs because she says, "You are so tiny and would probably love these things." I didn't want to hurt her feelings so once again I gave them a try. But I made a big mistake. I wore them with a denim skirt! At the end of the day I felt like my butt cheeks were chapped. So, I had dental floss in my butt and needed chapstick on my cheeks. I have totally forsaken the thought of ever enjoying thongs. And if I ever have a visible panty line--who cares?

Lots of good points Gigi. I personally don't even like when little girls run around topless (like at 1-2-3) and the parents just laugh and think it's cute. Teach them to keep their clothes on :( I know little kids love to rip them off, but that doesn't mean you should let them run around the park in a diaper for hours. It's bad for their skin anyway with the sun on them all day, so cover them up.

People, wake up and realize what you are doing. You are to care and nurture for our little ones not put them on public display. I was upset when I found out a friend was allowing her fourth grader to wear thongs because she and the older teenage sister were wearing them. Come on--let them be little and take responsibility for your role as an adult and/or parent.

If someone brought a child to my house with an overnight bag full of thongs I would refuse to put them on the child. I would head to Wal-Mart and buy the little dainty panties and I would throw away the thongs.

And people wonder why perverts attack and stalk our young girls. Well, if you put them out there as little sex objects then people are going to respond. You are sick and the pervert is sicker but you as the parent/caregiver can prevent this.

The first one says something about little girls who wear make-up and dress which are not age appropriate. I have been watching documentaries about the little girls' beauty pageants and I almost think THEY should be outlawed. The poor kids look so stressed out and they are wearing stuff that is sometimes really obscene almost. I can see why unstable people might be attracted to a child like that. I sometimes wonder if that isn't what made JonBenet a target, the poor little thing.

Geez people have to learn to do their research! I just looked up the Simpsons and that term to see what came up, and some article says that Marge "wife of Bart" said that... um, she's not his wife, she's his mom.

Other than that most reports are coming back that King of the Hill had a whole episode about it and I think I remember that episode now that I see that come up.

I also found an article saying the term started with Bratz dolls!

Regardless of where it came from, you would think that parents would hear that and want to make sure their kids don't dress in a way to get that nickname.

I've been researching this whole fad and trying to find out who originally coined "Prosti-tot." Some say it was coined on an episode of The Simpsons. Others say it was coined when the concern over the exposure of JonBenet Ramsey's Pageantry being part of the cause of her murder.

:( Those pageants are awful too. They have multiple TV shows about it and the mom's think they are doing nothing wrong by loading their kids with makeup and teaching them they have to wear 100$ dresses!

I think if they want to do talent pageants for kids that is one thing, but once you start teaching a 5 year old that they need Makeup - that's just too much. It's ok to do pageants for fun also (I had friends that were in them when they were real young) but once you make it their #1 importance in life - that's just WAY too much.

Seamless undies for comfort is one thing. (Perhaps you should patent that idea.) Thongs are not comfortable at all and the only reason women wear them is for men. I have worn them for my husband and that's behind closed doors and I hide them deep in my dresser (and this is the first time I've ever mentioned it, otherwise no one would know) They are not comfortable. One day a while back, my husband asked what the purpose was for a thong, besides for a husband/man, when it's so uncomfortable? I couldn't answer him. He then proceeded to tell me that he'd rather me be comfortable than wearing those. He said their were other ways that I can look attractive for him without having an uncomfortable piece of thread back there, so I haven't bought them since.

I have some friends say that they prefer to wear thongs because of the concern for the "visible pany line." But who really looks that close, unless you're wearing thin or light colored slacks? And now that they have seamless panties for women, why are they even necessary?

Why subject girls to thinking that's sexy when we should be showing them that the most attractive/special trait is to be themselves?

My 5-year-old likes to take all of her clothes off if they are not comfortable. She hates tags, melts down if her socks have strings, and can't stand for anything to be itchy. Seams are a particular issue with her. (This is a common symptom of Sensory Integration Disorder), so I probably won't have one single problem with my child even considering wearing a thong, if I accidentally picked up a pack of these. One big seam in one sensitive place...don't think I'll have to worry about this one.

I think that many little girls want to wear what the adults in their life like to wear. The baby wants to wear my husband's shoes. The 7-year-old wants to wear my hair things. OK--I hate seams and itchy stuff too so it's Granny panties around here for all of us. We go for comfort and I'm glad we do. I'm just hoping for easy-to-find seamless and VERY soft panties with cute pictures for little girls one of these days.

As for Barbie, ours usually end up without clothes when I'm not looking.

You remember when Barbie was something parents protested??? Now Barbie looks like an angel compared to Bratz and some of these other dolls. At least Barbie had some good jobs! She was a doctor, a nurse, a police officer and more :)

I too dislike the Bratz dolls, I heard they were out of business though and was glad- I would never let my kids play with a doll called "bratz" let alone the way they looked. I wouldn't want to raise little bratz!

Well i do think we can't protest everything (bratz for example, you just tell your kids why you dont want them to play with them) I do believe in protesting things like these thongs. I see NO reason why they would be needed. I wouldnt even let my 15 year old by a thong, let along a 5 year old :(

Having three kids (all young right now) I have seen plenty of toys / clothes / videos / FOOD that were targetted for children that I did not agree with. One item that I am currently discussing with my girls are the "Bratz" dolls given the way they are caked with makeup and the overall poor clothing options. There are always going to be items for children that some find offensive and I've have taken the approach of talking to my children to explain to them why this is not appropriate. I remember my folks either forbidding me to have something because they did not like it and that only furthered my interest in the item.

I hear the thong diapers are little to be desired ;-p

OKay now that's waaaay out of line! How dare they manufacture a perverse thing? Obviously they have no shame at all! These sick people are openly being sick and not embarrased and ashamed of publicising such perverse things. Oh man, they are so gonna get it with God if they don't repent! They are asking more for trouble!

I'm not a parent but I do have morals and my mom taught me what's the right thing to do and this, this is a disgrace! They are lower than animals!! Animals are starting to look better to the human eyes when it comes to judging their surroundings to protect their little ones. (Mother animals protect their youngs from predators no matter the size.)

This is infuriating! How come when it comes to immoral things, people pass that law or product easily and when it comes to something decent and good, it's difficult to .... I don't know how to put that but I imagine you know what I'm trying to say.

When 9/11 happened, porn was almost nonexitent!! (darn, if only it was gone for good!) And a lot of people got closer to God. Now what? Are people letting the faith be forgotten again? Are they asking for another punishment or what?

Even though I don't have children, I am disturbed by the thongs for tots issue but it is nothing new, alas!

When I was a little girl, my conservative dignified mother (God bless her) bought me regular underpants but my little friend next door wore special ones called "Bobbi Pants" which her Grandmother made for her because you couldn't even find them in stores. They looked like the briefest possible bikini bottom (imagine maybe HALF a bikini) which were meant to be worn like regular underpants. I had never seen something like that before and it really sort of shocked me even back then when my little friend and I were only five.

When I mentioned the bobbi pants to my friend's mother several years later, she said that someone had made a law against little girls wearing them! The thing is that to you or me, something like that would not be alluring or anything nor to a lot of normal men but to someone who is mentally unstable, well ..... !

Good point... preschool girls particularly don't have any sense of covering themselveswhen they have a skirt on. At least with regular underwear that's all you're seeing is the underwear and not more.

Basically all I have to say to this thread is OMG! Seriously??? I cannot even comprehend why moms would even buy that for their little girl. So disgusting that we are making our girls grow up so quickly. I mean seriously... at 3 years old they really need a thong??? They're barely potty trained let alone needing sexy underwear.

wow as a mom of a 3 year old i am not shocked to hear about this type of product. i have seen provocative underwear in the stores in the toddler section as well. however these were low rise boy shorts, u be the judge.

i would be even more shocked to learn that parents are spending their money on sexy undies for their baby girls because the product sounds like it is for people who take part in child exploitation. the police should be notified of whom is purchasing this item and keep close tabs on them.

I'm so appalled! As it is, there's so many child fashion designers that make shorts and skirts too high, shirts to small or with says like "sexy," for girls! It's just gross! I've seen tots in school wearing micro-mini skirts and I don't think it's cute, I find it disturbing, inappropriate and exploitive!

Wow, I'm pretty much speechless. My daughter is three and I would NEVER buy her something like that. Even when she's 18 I won't buy her thong underwear!

A friend of mine from another networking site tagged a note for me to read about her recent experience at a department store. This is absolutely shocking, disgusting and made me throw up in the back of my mouth a little!

I'm sharing it here, because of the many moms/dads on here and my friend is in the process of preparing a petition (which I will post when it's ready) and the more voices we have the better!

Please read and LEND YOUR VOICE TO THE CAUSE! Whether you're a parent or not, if this sounds disturbing to you, which I imagine it would to everyone, please feel free to comment and join the cause!

Here it is:

Ok, my 2 & 1/2 year old has done incredibly well with potty training, and today was her 1 month of absolutely no accidents (except at night, and those don't count right now)...To celebrate, I took her to the department store and let her pick our her very own big girl panties...She picked up a pack and handed them to me, and they looked adorable...One pair had little kittens on them, one had stars and hearts on them...blah blah...well, when I turned the package over to make sure it was the right size...The little diagram of the panties kind of shocked me. It looked like the panties were a thong. Ok, I flipped the package over, and it didn't say anything of the kind on the front...well, I was a bit curious, so I opened the package, and was absolutely shocked when I took a pair of panties out of the package, and it was a thong. What the HELL are people thinking to manufacture a THONG for a 2 year old?!?!?!? I noticed a sales girl standing not far away and asked her how well those panties sold...she said that they're hard to keep in stock. Again, ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? She said that thongs are extremely popular and they were a part of a new genre of clothing called "prosti-tots" I'm sorry, but what the HELL?!? First and foremost, I'm shocked, angry and disappointed that people think it's cute to dress their little girls like tramps. I'm completely disgusted that someone actually coined a phrase that puts prostitute and toddler in the same word. To be quite honest, I'm just plain pissed that any self respecting parent would think it's cute, that it's harmless and that it's acceptable...I read reports in the paper (On police beat) about people having their children taken away for child endangerment or neglect...Isn't dressing a little girl, little more than a baby, like a tramp, a form of child endangerment? This world abounds with perverts and sickos, and the clothing out there that people put on their children only encourages these pervs in their behavior. Don't get me wrong...what ever action a perv or sicko takes to harm a child is entirely on them, but where is the parents responsibility in making sure their child is dressed as a CHILD??? I'm not saying cover your little girl from head to toe, or shroud her completely, but COME ON!!!
