kind of in line (but not really) with the Updated Reviews discussion, I just had an idea for a profile feature I'd love

A Featured reviews section where we (the author) can choose any 5 reviews that appear as featured. I think that would be fun and around certain times of year we could highlight reviews related to that time of year, or maybe we could feature something we updated :) Just an idea, throw it on the bottom of the pile, not an urgent request :)

lilsquibb is right... A notation can be found at the end of each review that is updated. Please see the review of my cell phone for an example:

I updated the review this morning so there is now a notice stating that the review was last edited on October 28.

Vivasuzi, I and others wouldn't mind being able to know at a glance when going through our comments whether or not we already answered them. Like a symbol beside them.

How about after we reply to a comment, a checkmark appears to the left of the comment - and stays there.

Well, thats an idea. The main purpose of putting it on our profile page was for:

1) new visitors (and new members) that may not know or care to be apart of the message board.

2) Having it on the board could work, but over time it could get messy. Like if I wanted to see what MikeMaroon was up to, I could find out quickly without having to scroll through the thread. Overtime most threads fade away unless they are sticky.

A few of our top priorities in the profile page re-designs were to arrange the content in order of importance to the member, enable the reviewer to "tell a story" about who they are and also to encourage reading and writing reviews. With those goals in mind, where would you place a "coming soon" list on your profile? (e.g. below the blog, below your I Am tag cloud, above your friends/fans)

We'd love to hear everyone's feedback on this topic :)

Perry, I like your idea. You never know what or when someone is going to publish their review, but if we had a list on our homepage and say someone was interested in one of the products on my list, maybe that person would hold off in buying it or whatever. I would not object to someone sending me a comment asking when I was going to publish that review. Great ideas!

I started thinking about this the other night on a thread vivasuzi had started. I was reading a lot of the members "goals" and came across DUISparkys comment - "I'm just tryin to decide whether I want to review the '65 King, the Frankenstrat, the DC160, the DN612, the Tele, the Artcore, the SG, the Alleykat, the Palomino, the J-bass, or the SRV Strat."

Not all of the people that come to Viewpoints come to the boards, sad I know. But, this could also act as a feature that can catch someones eye, to come visit your page again.

Sometimes I will mention an upcoming view in a Blog or at the end of another review. Like, if I have just posted a book review and started another book I may tell the reader what book I have started. Also, if I am reading someone else's review and it gives me an idea I will tell them that I think I will review that same item or something similar.

No, drafts are what you are working on, but cant be seen or posted for other members to see until they are finished. This idea would allow your friends to see what you are working on (without seeing the draft) when they visit your profile page. :) Something like this:

My Views Coming Soon!

1) Sonys 50' plasma tv

2) Xbox 360

3) A night at Lonestar

4) Flying Delta Airlines

5) Sony new laptop

:) Just something to let your friends know what your up to with your reviews.

Links to RSS feeds are back on Reviews, Friends/Fans, Inbox, Profile, and Category pages. The built-in RSS notification button (usually in the location bar) is still available if your browser supports it (and if it finds an RSS feed on the page).

I'm not crazy that every time you switch views another browser tab opens up. Pretty soon you have a half dozen browsers or tabs. Can't that be wired to switch the page on a single browser?

We listened to your feedback and tweaked the way the link to "Public Profile" works. On any private page that has a corresponding public view (e.g. Profile, Reviews, Friends/Fans, Photos, Blog), a "show public view" link is available. It will not open a new window. Just think of it as a shortcut to your public view. And once on that public view, you will see a quick link to get back to the private view.

For me it is only the Public Profile BUT when I click it, it opens a new tab, I don't usually remember this, and I continue to browse around, ending up eventually back at my home, ending up clicking my public profile again, and then eventually I have a bunch of tabs open.

IF it truly is meant to be a quick view to show you your profile, then it shouldn't have any links on it and just be a true pop up that has none of the tabs (home, community, etc) accross the top. As long as all the navigation is there, it's very easy for me to forget it popped up in a new window.

I personally liked how before we could switch to view public and private with a link and only switch back when we choose to.

Some more updates on the review page and they are wonderful. I noticed the helpful votes are back and I love the comment count with each review. I like being able to scroll down the entire list of reviews. I have finally gotten used to where everything is again so I'm thoroughly enjoying the site again--never quit anyway! Thanks to everyone who is dedicating a lot of time and talent to make this website a success. Viewpoints--I'm loving it :+)

We hear ya on the ideas to add features like 1) setting your own default views in friend's activity, etc; and 2) moving modules around on your profile. We'll add these ideas to the wish list for future brainstorms. These would be BIG projects. We will be taking a breather on new designs for a little while so hang with us and keep those great ideas coming!

Not permanently, though. Only when you are on that &%^$ page. I don't like all that hardwired crap on my page. If I could select to leave most of that stuff off, I would. Permanently. Also, are we going to get the individual per review good points back on the profile page? That is a real serious question.

I agree that I wish we could set our own defaults on the friends activities. I really don't care who left whom a comment. (Is that mean?). I would just default to about three things and leave the rest out and do when I am there but then it goes right back to all the activities. I would love a personal default feature that we could save.

It was already addressed that we will be getting HV's back. :)

I agree. You are given 10 quick choices [don't have to pick them all]. Even if you only choose 5 or 6 topics that is a lot to go back and expand upon. I think it would be great if they would save as drafts or have the option of saving them as drafts.

You don't have to add a picture, but you do have to add pros or cons, I Am tags and the recommended or not. What I did is I did the quick review, and published, then I instantly went to edit it to add the other things and make it longer. If you know you are gonna finish it right then and there, this works.

You know, I too really want the Helpful Votes back on the reviews but I have also come to really like the design of these new things -- the photos in there really are neat and the whole thing must look a lot more attractive and inviting to people who are hopefully coming in from the outside and looking up things. Here's an idea, why not make a little bitty number for the H.V.'s? Something that could be tucked in a corner or by the picture a little ways down from the tag line. It doesn't even have to say "Helpful Votes" which might be distracting -- just the number would be enough for most of us "insiders". Anyway, it's a thought.

Hi Meri - I don't like them either. First of all I can't leave a comment. Second I think it is ok to just rate a product but not in this format. What I've seen though I don't know where is perhaps on the review page something like "Do you own this? Rate it" and then we could just click a star and it doesn't count as anything for us nor would we open up people's ratings. Just a thought....

Jo, yes, in the URL box, like you described there should be an RSS icon that you can click on to subscribe to the feed. For some reason in Firebox 3, it's a blue icon even though everyone else on the planet uses an orange icon! Who knew?

So, for example, I just clicked on your photo and see your profile page. In Firefox, I see the url bar that says: "http://www.viewpoints.com/aboutme/Jo" and all the way to the right in that box, there is a blue square RSS icon and a blue star. Not sure what the star is for, but you should be able to click the RSS icon and Firefox will ask you if you want to subscribe to the feed.

(as for the RSS icon actually being in the page, it does seem like we lost this in the redesign...discussing adding it back)

Actually, anyone can leave a Helpful Vote. You don't have to be a member of Viewpoints. We do some magic behind the scenes to make sure votes aren't double counted, but that's it. My guess is that the casual passerby just isn't as inclined to leave a Helpful Vote as a hardcore Viewpoints member.
Ahhh... I didn't know that. Thanks for the clarification. Still, I enjoy watching the reads go up and don't really need to see the votes go up with them. However, the fact that anyone can vote must explain why my most popular review continues to get regular HVs.

My guess is the same as Kyle. I sometimes leave a Yes/No on other sites I visit, but there are a lot of times where I am reading TONS of reviews for research and just ignore the Yes/No options. It's laziness :)

Also, many times I rely on the members of the site to put the Yes/No's and assume they do that to help me find the best comments. Like on All Recipes, the ones with the most Yes votes are on top and that helps me, so I figure the members of the site sorted those comments nicely for me - but I don't think about leaving my own Yes vote most of the time.

The blue star is a link to bookmark the page. And I can reaffirm that we are adding those RSS buttons back, the only question is timing.

Actually, anyone can leave a Helpful Vote. You don't have to be a member of Viewpoints. We do some magic behind the scenes to make sure votes aren't double counted, but that's it. My guess is that the casual passerby just isn't as inclined to leave a Helpful Vote as a hardcore Viewpoints member.

Jo, yes, in the URL box, like you described there should be an RSS icon that you can click on to subscribe to the feed. For some reason in Firebox 3, it's a blue icon even though everyone else on the planet uses an orange icon! Who knew?

Are they going to change the color bubbles for the ranks? The green ones currently represent the top 100/500 and the yellow represent the top 25/50. Can they add more colors so that the ranks for the reviews stand out a little better? I love the new quick reviews, blogs versus scribbles, recommending my friends to others, and the ability to add more pictures. This is one fantabulous site--keep up the good work. Also, I'm thoroughly enjoying everyone's new profile pictures with the Halloween pictures even though mine might not "say" so.

If someone leaves a comment and the HV count has gone up I know where it was posted. If someone just gives me a HV and doesn't leave a comment I don't know where it was posted. I like to know what people like.

Hi Anne - We'll investigate the page views count in stats. That sounds fishy for sure.

Under Friends Activity... you have the freedom to adjust the display to what you want to see. There are filtering options on the left side column. Check off the boxes you want to view: reviews, discussions, friends, photos, comments, blog entries. You are probably seeing ALL your friend's activity now because the page defaults to show every new action. 300 pages! Woo-hoo... you have a lot of friends :) I hope this helps. The new Profile page is really exciting and seems to be developing well; however, it may be that there are a few "blips" yet to be worked out. In tracking my Stats every day I notice that -- although the "hits" and the helpful votes go up, the "Views" number hasn't moved in three days. It's very unusual for me not to have at least ten or eleven more views of my Profiles page every day and suddenly nothing is happening so maybe that field has to be adjusted to change automatically. Also, in case anyone cares, I can't seem to find anybody else's latest reviews anymore. The message in the upper right hand corner of the "Home" page says there are 76 latest reviews written by my friends but when I click on that, all I get is more than 300 pages of my Friend's Latest Activities. Other than that, everything seems to be okay.

Found something I'm really LOVING about this new profile set-up... when you are in your in-box or comments section you can actually see ALL the comments you've ever recieved... not just the past 30 days as before. I figured those were all gone and now I see comments posted back in 2007. Yay!!

RSS feeds are still available, we just don't have an icon in the page anymore. Your browser should automatically detect that a feed is available and display the RSS icon. In Internet Explorer 7 this icon shows up on the right side of the tabs (near the Page and Tools icons/menus). In Firefox it shows up in the URL box.

I have no issues at all with Windows opening. I am using Firefox 3. whatever the very latest version is and not once has another window opened when I clicked anything except the public profile link. Everything else stays within the same tab/window.

nah don't like it. I often go to my own public profile, as I did in the past, and I do on other sites, to find my own reviews easier and quicker. Our latest reviews don't even show on our private profile without hitting an additional link.

I'd also like to add that ppl who use IE 7 won't even notice it is opening in a sep window. For me and others I've talked to, it opens in a new tab. So then I had like 4 tabs across the top as I was editing/previewing my profile and never realized it kept opening new windows.

As a web designer, the only time I find it necessary to open something in a new window is if it is a small help tip that is in a small box that is obviously just a pop up OR if you are taking the person to a completely different website.

I really like the new look and new options for private e-mails and friend's activity on my own page. My first impression was ditto others on the scroll down for reviews but I also take into account that most people probably found my home page through a review and not vice versa, so I can see the point of letting them get to know me before they read on...but my question is how obvious is it to outsiders (love all of you VP insiders but the reality is all of our reads don't come from "within" the VP community and that is wonderful) that they can scroll down to see more reviews.
Overall, my Viewpoint is four stars on the page...I know five stars will come from this amazing Veiwpoints team. Thanks for listening.

I'm really liking the motto at the top and as I visit other people's home pages, I can't wait to see what words they live by!

The ability to add more pictures and being able to search pictures from reviews--awesome!

I also think it's cool to be able to look up people in my own state.

The only thing that I found that didn't work really well was when I was trying to update my interests. Several of mine fall under "other," but I could only have one "other" under each topic. I combined a couple of things under "other" but it was a little awkward.

Overall, you guys should give yourselves a BIG pat on the back. Now if only Congress would listen to people as much as you guys do....

I like the new design a great deal. I'm still getting acclimated but I do like it a lot more than the older layouts. I'm not sure if I miss the "helpful vote" count by each review on the home page. In some ways I do, but not enough to say, "Please put it back." Maybe it's because I have done a few reviews that I really like that haven't gotten that many hits and the HV count reminds me of that, or maybe because adding the HV box again would make the page "busier." On the lighter side of things, I noticed that the Stats logo (a pie chart) looks a bit like a light green Pac Man about to eat a wedge of St. Patrick's Day pizza. Just sayin'!

A few more thoughts: I'm not a fan of the links that open in new windows, like when I click "public profile" and get a new tab. Just playing around today I ended up with 4 VP tabs open and don't know how that happened. There's no need to open these things in a blank page in my opinion.

Second, I know it's probably not what VP wants, but I managed to clean up my profile by clearing out all my interests and deleting my blog. I like it much better that way! I might end up blogging still, but the interest thing to me just wasted space so unless that moves somewhere else, I'm not filling it out.

Go to My Home - then scroll down to Latest Friends' Activity. There you can see every new action your friends make. But wait, there's more! You can hit the link in that section that says "more friends' activity"... you'll be taken to a page that allows you to sort display by reviews, discussions, photos, comments, etc.

Hi, Patty! As you can see from my own desperate comments, I miss the Helpful Votes too. I think somebody figured we could just look them u p in the Stats but of course the reviews aren't listed in the Stats in the same order as they were done, ARE THEY! And when you've done more than 300 reviews, that can make a difference. I think it would have been better to jostle the design a little and make a space for helpful votes in SMALL characters. It does seem that Helpful Votes are an important issue here.

HUGE changes! I like most of them. My only issue is where are all the comments? I used to reply via my page rather than go to every review and answer comments. now I only see two. And I can't find my comments made to my own page. I see everyone else's but don't know where mine are. I like it though. I just need to wrap my head around so much new stuff. It looks a lot like a social networking site which I know draws people in.

I plan to spend some time exploring everything tonight. I love the blog, the extra pics, the pics from reviews, private comments (<3), and several other features.

There is a new section called Latest Friends' Activity. It is the 2nd box on your My Home page (just below the Inbox). The "more friends activity" link will take you to a page that shows all the activity (new reviews, blog entries, discussion posts, etc) that your friends have left in the past few weeks.

Hopefully this will provide more information for you to stay on top of all the things that are going on. Let us know what you think...

I'll add this to the list of things to investigate. My hunch is that you have one of those pesky "ratings" hanging around. On the old profile page we used to show your "ratings" count separate from your "reviews" count. I'll check into what we are displaying now ----------------------------------------------- Yes, I have written 404 reviews, but for some reason one of them ended up as a rating and there was no way to figure out which review the system considered a rating.

The look is great. The extra features are really nice. It is a little complex with so many places to go and things to do. My thoughts are that someone just driving by will click around and find interesting things. Those interested in being a part of the community will play around and ask questions. So, while I think it's a lot to take in, I'd say it works on different levels and for different surfing styles. Wow. Side note. I sure post a lot of photos. I didn't think much about that until seeing the gallery. To Jasyjen - If you click to stats, you can see the helpful votes. Not sure about other places. But, you can click that and see them all listed.

Wow, I go out for a day, come home, log on and find a whole new page! It looks pretty cool, but Ihaven't really gotten into it yet. I will check it out now.

I like the way it looks, although it will take awhile to get used to it. The only question I have is, do we have to go into our review now to see the helpful votes? That information used to right on the profile page, but now I don't see it.

The jury is still out, not sure if it was because I was (and still am tired) of if my head was just swimming because of the pres. debate! I do like the ability to do private messages, as well as the blogging ability. I have to go with the crowd on one item, that I would like to move the boxes around myself, and that I wish it was easier to visit my "home" page and find my reviews right off. I dont' really think that stuff about me makes people trust me any more or less.

So, after I get some rest I will spend a good long time playing with it, but for now lets just sent VP and the techno gods there a big round of applause for such a great job on a huge task . . . virtually bug free--so far! (standing ovation)

I'll complain later if I find bugs in my soup. :->

Love the redesign! I'm still getting used to the changes, but I can see that there is a lot of potential just waiting to be tapped into. The only issue I came across concerns the number of reviews. On the "My Home" tab, it indicates that I have 403 reviews. However, when I click on the "Reviews" link, it says "404 Reviews Total" (on the top, right hand side of the page). Why the discrepancy? I guess that's just a bug. Overall, the quality of the design is fabulous, IMO. :)

RSS feeds are still available, we just don't have an icon in the page anymore. Your browser should automatically detect that a feed is available and display the RSS icon. In Internet Explorer 7 this icon shows up on the right side of the tabs (near the Page and Tools icons/menus). In Firefox it shows up in the URL box.

Thanks for looking into that! I am very bad at guessing how many characters I've typed!

As for things I do like, to be kind :)

I like the photo page and that we can see the random sampling of our review photos! I like the blog idea, that's cool. I like the quick reviews- although I plan to turn all of my quick reviews into real reviews :) But I like them anyway b/c of they give you a good start on a review idea! I like that drafts show the product name now, that makes life easier. I like the Reviews page and Friends/Fans page as these make it easier to see more things at one time. And finally, i like that there are no more of those scrollable boxes within our profile pages, those were a little bit confusing.

Hi! The new profile page really looks nice and has a lot going for it. I notice that the place which used to say "Welcome" and instant access to reviews or comments is now blank for some reason and it is a little awkward getting in. Progress is always like this -- a lot of good things happen but there are alway some things which weren't really broken to begin with which end up getting "fixed". For instance, I really liked the idea of having the Helpful Votes listed with each review (I think this is what George meant about "hits") but I guess someone thought this was old fashioned. Now thanks to progress, we are all back to the old way of having to go into each review independently and then scrolling down to the bottom to see the latest Helpful Votes. (Unless there's something I'm missing?) But for the most part, the new profile page looks good and you guys deserve a lot of credit for the effort that went into this!

p.s. We made the decision to put your personal data (photos, blog & fun facts) above reviews bc we really believe that the more people know about YOU, the more they will trust what you have to say.

The biggest thing I would change is to have the tiny little print that says "view more of Meri's reviews" a larger font so that people actually notice it.

It is going to take me a while to figure this all out but another thing I noticed is that once you finally scroll down to the reviews they are really big. Maybe they could be a little smaller and fit a few more reviews on the page?!

My first item: I was so excited because I saw a reply under a comment I received from Mike. I replied that it was really neat that we had this because I imagined he would get an e-mail that someone had replied. In any case I had already left him a comment on his profile page which I don't see but after I replied I got

Your comment has successfully posted to my profile page - why not his??

I'm off to spend a few hours here lol - I just got a glimpse when I left a comment on MM's profile page and saw the private things. Thanks everyone for all your work. Really it is so nice to see things work even if we don't love everything at least it works and if it doesn't it is fixed quickly. Just wanted to say that publicly.

Just under your most popular reviews in the last 30 days (on the right side) is a small icon for access to all your Stats.

I like the changes. It'll take some time to find everything but so far I'm impressed.

Exciting news! We launched a huge redesign of the profile page tonight. Say hello to new functionality and features-a lot of the ones you have been asking for!

You now have a place called My Home which is basically the center of YOUR Viewpoints universe. You can track all important stuff there like: Your inbox messages, your stats, your discussion board threads, and all your reviews.

To get your feet wet... We suggest visiting My Home and get to know the following sections:

About Me - Tell us about you so we can connect you to other members with similar interests. (These are all new features-so you definitely want to jump in and do these!)
Friends & Fans - Check out our 4 new ways to make new friends! Meet people in your state, people with similar I AM tags and more!
Profile SiteMap (the link to it is called MORE...) - A simple snapshot of all the elements that make up your profile.

The major highlights are: (drum roll please)

Ability to mark "private" comments to others. These messages will not appear publicly on the site.
You can add more photos to your profile page than ever before. And, your review photos are now on your photos tab
Scribbles functionality will be more like a blog with dated entries that are easier to track and more reader-friendly
Ability to track threads you're in on the discussion boards more easily. You will have a feed of the threads you have commented on that have new posts
