My only huge fear is flying. I used to be fine with it, but after watching the 5 minute crash scene of Castaway, I've never been the same when it comes to flying. Hooray for Xanax and in-flight drinks.

I am also starting to develop quite a fear of the house catching on fire while I'm at work. I won't leave lights on, humidifiers running, fans running, and I am starting to get nervous about the CrockPot.

I'm proud to say that I'm facing one of my biggest fears and I drove myself to the play every night this last weekend! . . . Nows time for more practice and eventually (preferably within the next 4 months because my permit expires in March -which woud be for the 6th time, if I let that happen!) get my DL!!!

I'm afraid of germs. I think about them so much, I think I feel them crawling on me after I've touched a grocery cart. It's disgusting!

LOL LOL! If you read a couple pages previous, you'll see that I also have a cottonphobia! Haha! Mine is mostly of the cotton inside the pill bottles. *shivvvverr*

I think I posted something similar to yours when I first posted on this board. My family and friends think it is outrageous how many fears I have. Most of them stem from bad experiences: being bitten by a Doberman, getting a granddaddy long leg stuck in my ear (yes, that happened to me), and this summer just weeks before I joined Viewpoints I got bit by a king or coral snake twice!!

But I do love cotton balls for taking off nail polish and just the other week I was at my best friend's house for Thanksgiving. She took a load of towels out of the dryer. I was lying on her bed watching TV and she came in and threw them all on me. I am very cold natured and was all curled up like I was cold. Ahhh...it was so hot and felt great. I just pulled them all up to me! She said, "I thought you would like that." I wouldn't let her fold any of them until they were no longer warm.

Maybe you and I should both be on Dr. Phil ;+) R11 no comments. LOL

That reminds me: When I was in 7th or 8th grade we were visiting a friend's church and I fell down a spiral staircase. I have been afraid of them since.

The slumber party that we played all the games at--remember my Truth or Dare question that Mike asked me? i lost my skirts on several occasions.

So, maybe a fear of losing your clothes in public--aaghhh!!

I have so many fears or phobias that it's ridiculous. I'm a worrisome person, by nature. I blame my Grandmother....she's ruined us all by teaching us "The Gift of Fear"!

Traveling in general - I leave for NYC on Sunday and I am SCARED TO DEATH of going there!
THe Unknown - type A here. I need to know everything, in advance down to the tinest detail. I do not like not knowing what comes next.
Snakes - Seriously....they totally freak me out, even on television.
Something happening to my kids - I tend to take this overboard. I always think the worst..it's ridiculous.

Maybe I should go on Dr. Phil?

ROFLMAO!

Actually it's a shot of oncoming traffic on Interstate 70 during near-blizzard conditions that eventually shut down the freeway at Vail Pass and the Eisenhower Tunnel and caused me to spend an extra night away from home over the turkey-day weekend. We were lucky enough to get a motel room for the night at least.

Toilet lid....... heh heh heh....... that'd be mighty cold on the ol' cheeks!

I have a friend (Laurel) who refuses to drive on the interstate because she is afraid of merging into traffic. She also will not drive over the Lake Murray Dam. During the last 2 years they built another dam so that we could go from 2 to 4 lanes and the lanes going in toward the lake go into a hole. You drive down and a big gray stone wall surrounds you on the right. My house is on the lake and Laurel drives about 10-12 miles out of her way to avoid the dam to get to my house.

I can't think of anything I have a fear of really. I mean I have the usual, common sense kind of "If it's a snake and it rattles, go the other way." sort of respect for certain poisonous/dangerous creatures, but mostly if you leave them alone they'll leave you alone.

Back when I first started playing music I was afraid of making a mistake in front of people at a gig, but nowadays I really don't give a rat fart. d;-)

Okay, to all of you who posted a fear or phobia about spiders, bugs, insects, etc. Go to my photo gallery and look at that bug.

I was out on my back deck about an hour ago and saw that thing on the side of my house! I almost fell off the deck. Well, I couldn't walk down the steps because I thought that thing might get me.

I came back inside and got my camera to take a picture of it. Good thing my camera has a good zoom lens. What is that thing? Is it an overgrown praying mantis? ~Gigi

My younger sister doesn't have a license either. She was in several terrible car accidents as a teenager, right when her girlfriends were learning to drive. We never understood "why" she became afraid of driving because she was never driving during any of the accidents. I never had a desire to learn to drive either--the ladies on my mother's side never drove until my generation. But right before my 21st birthday my brother encouraged me to get my license because I would be graduating from college and needed more independence. I love it!

NOTHING???? Okay, us girls may have 'fessed up to a lot of fear of normal things like animals, critters, heights, etc.

What about psychological fears or abstract fears? Like the fear of losing a child or loved one. Fear of drowning, getting paralyzed in an accident, being shot, etc.

Many guys at my work always talk about fears that seem like they could never comce true but happenstance it does. Like Christopher Reeves getting paralyzed from a riding accident.

I am pretty sure I know where my ant fear comes from. I remember one morning as a child going down to the kitchen and seeing a bunch of ants in our sink. As if that was not bad enough, my father was killing them...with his bare fingers. I thought I was going to vomit right there.

LOL. I don't mind the first one but, after I know how terrible it feels, I always end up flinching and they have to to the second eye at least three times. I try really hard to stay still but my brain doesn't like air puffs in my eyes. My son refuses to have it done. He can't deal with it. He also refuses to put eye drops in his eyes and the thought of contacts make him turn white with fear.

I think everyone hates the poof test. It's 2008, almost 2009, surely they can come up with something less stupid than air blowing into your open eyes!

Those big fuzzy spiders creep me out too - especially when the fangs start twitching back and forth. I'm afraid of heights too - but not in all situations. Being 35,000' in an airplane doesn't bother me, but being on a 10' roof does. I sometimes have a fear about public speaking. When I took Grad School classes we always had to do presentation before the whole class. Sometimes I hated it, and other times I had no problems with it at all.

Maybe he was hoping to get a date ;+) I was always short so sometimes I had to wait until the next year to get on certain rides. One year, my older brother Jimmy beat up a carnie. They tried to kick him (my brother) out of the fair but too many of his friends took his side and it wasn't worth all the arguing and so forth so they told my brother to go on and not to come back to that ride if/when that carnie was working.

I never was a really brave person about a lot of things but I was crazy about amusement park rides from the get-go. My poor Mom would get sick from riding almost anything and since I was an only child, if I didn't have a playmate along with us, I would ride alone. Started of with the Merry-go-Round (still love a good carousel!) but quickly graduated to the Ferris Wheel. I was only seven but tall for my age and looked older. My Mom would pay my ticket and I'd just trot on up and get in the next seat that was available.

My only scary experience on a Ferris Wheel came when I was 21! As I was passing a carnival, I decided to take a spin on the Wheel which lasted more than half an hour because the guy who ran it refused to let me off. He would empty the other seats and take on new people but he would zip the Wheel through so that my seat wouldn't stop at the getting-off place. I can't imagine what he was thinking or what his plan was but by that time it was getting late and the carnival site getting deserted. As the guy emptied out the seat in front of mine and looked up at me, all ready to zip me through again, I unlocked the bar and STOOD UP! That took care of THAT and I could finally get off!

After that, the scary thing about these rides to me is not the machines but the people who run them. (And of course, possible defects in the equipment which I know more about now.)

So be careful when you visit amusement parks or carnivals -- better to go with a companion or a group!

I'm laughing about you banging on people's doors hoping they would let you in. Can you imagine what they thought: "This crazy woman is trying to get in our house! I will add mice to my list of "if it breathes or crawls/walks..."

My fear of dogs is just the opposite of yours. I was never really afraid of them until I was attacked by a Doberman when I was 12 or 13. I still have the scar on my right leg where he bit me. Now I am afraid of any dog, big or small; except for my brothers and best friend. I think if I am around the dog when it is a puppy and I get to see it grow then I'm not so intimidated.

I pushed my best friend Debbie out of a truck in the pouring rain when a dog came charging at me. I thought it was going to get me and I jumped into the truck so fast and was trying to crawl over her to get away from it. The next thing we knew: I was sitting where she was and she had fallen out of the truck.

Hey, Patty! I hear you and can feel your pain about the rodents. One time I walked into my bathroom here in the middle of the night and a VERY small black mouse ran across the floor! Knock on wood that this has been the only mouse I have ever seen here.

There were 25 other people or families living in this building and within ten minutes nearly every one of them was wide awake (at 3 A.M.!) partly because I was going arouind banging on their doors and telling them about the mouse (hoping that someone would take me in and nobody did!) The mouse thing I think is pretty generic and common to a lot of people (especially females) but I had another really funny fear when I was little.

For the first decade of my life, I was terrified of most DOGS! Except for a cherished two or three canines that I trusted, I would get completely hysterical if even a three month old puppy ran up to me, wagging its tail. Now I can laugh at this but it was very traumatic at the time with me even having nightmares about dogs. Then one day when I was ten years old, a dog ran up to me on the sidewalk and BOOM, I wasn't afraid of it and have rarely ever been afraid of dogs again. It was really wierd!

There is a big difference between a fear and a phobia. I had agoraphobia for a year when I was 20. I stayed in the apartment I lived in and only went out the door for the mail. I eventually could go outside on the lawn. Then I could walk a little ways from the door. It took a long time to get over that and it was so weird. It was like a switch was turned on when I got to the door and my heart raced, I was jelly legged, faint, dizzy. Even when I was able to go places, all I could think of was getting the heck back home where it was "safe".

Glad that ended. Now I never want to GO home when I go out. lol.

I have a phobia of being a large crowds. I HATE not being able to get the heck out of the place if I want to. I went to a concert at a very large venue and, while I enjoyed it, all I could think of was when the lights went up and everyone was pushing and shoving to get out and my inability to get out when I wanted. And sure enough that happened. I sat in my seat and just waited rather than tried to fight the crowd. My heart was racing though.

I have a lot of fears but I think the main phobia is simply being able to get out fast and get to the car if I need/want to. For a LONG time in my 20's, I sat where I could actually see the exit sign at restaurants and I shopped in stores but got faint and anxious the further from the door I was. I wouldn't even go to the back of the store.

Now I don't really worry all that much but I still hate not having an exit plan. I don't know why or how it developed but I pay strict attention to where I am going and how I would get out just "in case".

I fear mice but I'm not phobic. Just scared to death of them. Shudder.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention - I'm afraid of zombies. I know they're not real but I'm still terrified of them. I think it was because my parents let me watch Dawn of the Dead when I was really young...I also saw the new one on the theatre in 2004...bot of them gave me nightmares for a month! I guess I'm most afraid that there will be some virus like that someday...weird, yes, I know.

I have a couple phobias that are weird. I'm terrified of calling people on the phone that I don't know well. I can call my husband, my mom, or my sister but anyone else freaks me out. I hate calling for take out. I think it might be because I have social anxiety - I don't like going out in public much, especially if it's really crowded - I feel like I'm having a heart attack.

I'm also somewhat germ-a-phobic which is interesting, since I'm going to school to be a nurse. I can deal with it, but I have to wear a couple layers of latex gloves and I always wash my hands throughly followed by hand sanitizer and microbial lotion. I'm paranoid about being sick or getting some deady virus or something.

And of course, spiders. I can stand them at all - the bigger they are the worst the fear is. I am very proud of myself though because I killed a HUGE one a few weeks ago. It was climbing up my living room wall and I was getting ready to head out the door. Hubby was at work. I couldn't stand the thought of that thing escaping and wandering around my house! So I grabbed a sandal and did the whole smack-and-smear killing move - you know, when you smack the spider/bug with the shoe and smear it so you know for sure that it's dead and not on the shoe somewhere?

lol anyway, I'm done sharing my weird oddities.

You are one brave soul. You're not going to get me to pick up a spider, no siree! I jump when we're out walking and I hear the birds or squirrels stir the leaves.

I joined Viewpoints in August. I was bit by a king or coral snake (twice) while sticking my hand thru a fence in my backyard. I dropped a bowl over the fence and got zapped. I thought I hit a briar and didn't think anything about it until my hand swelled up. I had to go through an envenomation process for five days and that made me sick. Because of my Lupus I also had to have chest x-rays and tissue samples drawn to make sure the venom didn't damage anything else. It was a week long ordeal and something I hope to never go through again.

I can relate to the water issues. I'm an excellent swimmer and diver but I can't stand to be around people when they are fooling around near water. I don't like to play chicken fights and freak out if someone makes an attempt to dunk me under water because I'm afraid they won't know how long I can hold my breath.

I also don't like going in the ocean because I can't stand to feel the salt on my skin and I gut stung by a jellyfish while on a trip with my SS class. I will get out there jump a few waves and then I'm done with that.

I was raised in Texas and did a lot of outdoor activities so for a girl I don't freak out with bugs, snakes, and so forth. I am the mother of seven beautiful children and one of my worst fears is to lose one of them. I love to swim but also have a fear of someone playing rough with me and drowning me by accident. In my mind I don't think anyone knows what my tolerance is for staying under water and I fear them holding me down too long. And when we vacation at the beach I won't go in the ocean because I have a fear of jellyfish and sharks.

I thought I was the only person with a Ferris Wheel phobia. One summer my cousins and my brother wanted me to go to Six Flags with them. I told them no thanks. I tried to talk them into going to the Atlanta Zoo, but they said that is no fun. Needless to say, I stayed home. I don't think I could handle my child wanting to go on a Rollercoaster, Ferris Wheel, etc. I'd probably faint.

If someone even TRIED to put me on a Ferris Wheel.............I think I would just have a heart attack and die. Just watching other people on those things makes me feel nervous to my stomach. My phobia of those are so bad, that I wont let my kids get on one either. My seven year old wanted to get on it, but I started crying when he was in line. HOW BAD IS THAT GOING TO MESS HIM UP????

I'm meeting him there, and then he's driving us the rest of the way to Ohio for a family reunion. With my fear of heights, there's NO WAY I could drive through the mountains to get to Ohio alone! LOL

No I don't even think that is a strage fear :) I am always nervous going to a new place, nervous first that I won't find the place, nervous second that it's an unsafe place or that people will know I'm a tourist and be after me.

I think it's only good to be cautious when on vacation and keep all your eyes open!

When I was a child a double ferris wheel at Myrtle Beach crashed to the ground and a few people died. I became very much afraid of them after hearing about that tragedy. To this day I will not ride the ferris wheels that have the bench-style seats but for some reason I will ride the ones that have the round bucket-style seats; weird huh? I'm also afraid of the big swings at the fair but I ride them under duress. My fear is that they are going to break away from the big center pole and we will "fly away." After all the tragedies at theme parks this summer; I'm not sure how comfortable I am with any rides.

Hi! I kept adding to my original post. I kept remembering I had a fear of this and that. I might have added tornado after you posted yours. I literally had a list going at my desk. I hope we don't have too many tornadoes next year. I was never fearful of tornadoes until I moved to West Georgia (near Atlanta, GA).

Oh, I asked my youngest nephew what he was afraid of. Elijah will be 9 in a few weeks and he said nothing. I didn't believe him so I asked him again and you know what he said. "Auntie, there is one thing I'm afraid of, dutch ovens." I told him I didn't know what he meant and he said, "That's when Daddy pulls the blankets over your head and then passes gas. You can't get out from under the covers and boy does it smell." I couldn't quit laughing.

I love rollercoasters and can ride them with my hands in the air the entire ride. I am a human pin cushion and can watch them stick needles in me and draw blood but I can't handle that little finger prick. Snakes--yikes! I got bit twice by a king or coral this summer and had to go through an envenomation procedure to get better. And bees...Go see The Secret Life Of Bees and you might feel better :+) I scream bloody murder if I see a cockroach, lizard, cricket, etc. and if they fly that is more terrifying because it is harder to kill them.

I have so many fears that my family says I probably have a fearphobia. Let's see: I'm afraid of spiders, snakes (remember I got bit twice this summer right before I joined VP), dogs, insects, bugs and strangers. If they breathe or walk I am probably afraid of them.

I'm afraid of thunderstorms and any earthly natural disaster (tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, etc.). This is probably because my family was in a tornado when I was four or five years old.

As I got older I became afraid of heights. I have a fear of being sedated because I have seen so many movies about women being raped while they were sedated

Psychologically I have a fear of being rejected or abandoned. I also fear losing close friends and family thru death. Since I am still single I also have a fear of growing old alone or being at home by myself and something bad happening.

My Daddy used to say I was afraid of my own shadow. Some fears encourage us to be more aware of our environment while others paralyze us mentally. And making someone face their fears to overcome them doesn't work for me--that's too traumatic!

I'm afraid of rollercoasters too. I think it's part of the height fear I have.

I was reading a magazine (I think People) and there were people TERRIFIED of really ordinary things like balloons, cotton candy, etc...... It must be something from childhood.

Spiders and tornadoes. I live nowhere near a tornado zone, but Wizard of Oz gave me so many nightmares growing up, that I developed a fear. Um, I think my fear of spiders started with horror movies too, you know those creepy turantula movies where hundreds of big, fat hairy spiders surround you and you have no escape? Yeah, and this was long before Arachnophobia came out. That movie didn't help either. Although, nowadays I can handle the site of a spider a lot better than I used to, for the sake of my kids not seeing their mommy freak out like a mad woman and running the opposite direction from s little the pencil-eraser sized invader.

I have phobias too but medication has helped some. I still don't like waiting in line like for the subway or in traffic but I can do it. I am terrified and never would bo on one unless I was in a coma - a rollercoaster. Actually I have a fear of anything going down fast but that's more fear than phobia I think. The traffic and bus thing is really a phobia. Wonkao (where did that name come from?) what's with the eye thing? Jo

I have an extreme fear of two things. Heights & Traveling to unfamiliar places alone.

Next week I will be driving 5 1/2 hours to D.C. ----- I'm terrified. Am I the only one with a strange fear and/or phobia??
