I was reading about musicians who refuse to do certain songs anymore (for example, Robert Plant won't do "Stairway to Heaven," calling it "that bloody wedding song"), and I was wondering: Have you ever done anything that you refuse to do again? What is it? Was it something good that was overdone, or something that evoked bad consequences?

When I was playing guitar in clubs a lot, I would do a song called "Harvey & Sheila." Think of the Jewish folk song "Hava Nagila" with funny lyrics. I became so associated with that song that people started asking for it all the time and it got rather tedious to play it. I'd do just about anything to avoid playing it, in fact. I'm not in Robert Plant's (or Jimmy Page's) league, but I know a little of how they feel.

After a certain amount of time Gene Kelly refused to sing or dance to "Singing In The Rain" and Dana Carvey wouldn't portray "Church Lady".

I guess they just want to be known for other things.

I have stopped playing battles of with with unarmed opponents. After a while it's not fun anymore. (LOL!!)

I refuse to drive down a certain street in Baton Rouge.  I've gotten two speeding tickets on it in almost the exact same place.  The road has a hideaway where you can't see the cops and the speed limit is like 25 so if you are traveling 35 or 40...BOOM you get a ticket.  That road is now off my limits.  Learned my lesson :)  Anyone else get two tickets in the same place??

Not two tickets in the same place, however once I was pulled over for speeding in the west bound lane which had a lesser speed limit than the east bound lane, on the same stretch of road.

Ouch!  Now that's just not even fair!

I also refuse to play Stairway to Heaven (unless it's with the lyrics from Gilligan's Island) as well as Freebird.

However, we have come up with a couple of new Hybrid songs called Stairway to Freebird (Lyrics to Freebird sung over Melody to Stairway) and Freeway to Stairbird (other way around).

I spread my traffic tickets out in different cities.

A friend of mine got three DUI tickets in the same night when driving home from the bar. But she fought them all in court, and they were all dropped.

I once swam way too far out into the Gulf of Mexico without a life jacket and nearly drowned. Now I never go out past my shoulders.

Once ate (as a child) a Hershey's syrup sandwich on white bread. Just what it sounds like. The thought of it now nearly gags me.

Once drove on (Houston) Loop 610 for 10 miles during a hurricane in a car without windshield wipers. The wiper motor fell off while I was driving and there was nowhere to pull over. Rather eat a chocolate syrup sandwich than do that again.

Robert Plant without Jimmy Page behind him is pointless, at least to me. Know, though, that all British musicians look down on their early (best) work as they age. It's a gentile habit they've all adopted.

Musically, I'm burn't out on "Voodoo Child" and "Oye Como Va". And on the radio, "The Devil Went Down To Georgia". Horrible, horrible song.

Poor Bobby McFerrin! Everybody knows him for "Don't Worry, Be Happy," when he is an accomplished musician and composer. That must be annoying! Especially since Big Mouth Billy Bass breathed new life into that tune years later...

I worked at a small company, and in a meeting I used the phrase "we need to come up with a plan of action..." Then, everytime anything needed to be done "plan of action" came up all the time. It was SO overused. I was really sorry I used that phrase...

Good thread! I enjoy reading the comments even though I can't think of anything to post for myself! :)

In one word...MARRIAGE!  She lied - she cheated - she withheld my son from me after the divorce.  'nuff said?

I wont float out to sea again without learning how to swim first.  This summer while vacationing in the Bahamas, I was lying on a float and floated to far out.   Had to have a nice lady come bring me back to shore.

I wouldn't go on another cruise. I never was a big fan of the idea of cruises but we went on one in '99 for the farewell tour of the WCW Magazine. The company was fabulous (my whole family was there, all the magazine staff, many wrestlers that I had known for years, etc.) but the water was very rough and people were throwing up all over (I didn't). The little room we had was teeeeeny. I hated how small it was. I felt like I was suffocating. There were four of us in there and it barely could contain us. Trying to eat was crazy. Our plates would slide away.

The stops at the Bahamas were nice but short. We would just be somewhere and had to RUN to get back on the ship. Once, my sister just about missed it and would have been stuck in the Bahamas with nothing but her purse which only had a few bucks in it.

Walking around was uneasy due to the water being so rough and I had to hold onto things to get to where I was going. I did enjoy much of the cruise like the gambling and the good food (when it wasn't sliding away from me) as well as the company but I'll pass next time. I prefer solid ground to a moving resort.

In the musicians who won't perform things they are known for front....Billy Joel won't ever sing Just the Way You Are no matter how much an audience or producer begs him to do it.  He loves the song and is glad that people like it, but it's just not something he wants to reprise.

As to what I wouldn't want to do again....well, I wouldn't want to go on another cruise, either.  I went at an age where I basically believed the whole Love Boat thing and wanted to "hook up" with a nice single woman...did NOT happen.   Also, the ship caught fire before we docked and two people died.  Not fun.

There is another thing I wouldn't do ever again...but only a chosen few know what that is.....

Loan out money that I can't afford to do without! Once loaned a boyfriend $300 to repair the seat on his car and never saw it again. Loaned $187 to a "friend" to stay out of jail on a ticket, never saw it again. Loaned $100 to my brother who has never even attempted to pay a dime back. Have loaned money to others and had to basically bill collect on them to get it back.

My dad told me one time, "Never loan out any money that you can't afford to do without". It is a shame, but when you loan it out, consider it gone, until you get it back.

Remember these words (not sure who wrote them): "Neither a borrower nor a lender be."
