Having been raised in a building trades family and being married to a contractor for absolutely ever, I believe I know my way around hand tools. heh.
Generally a DeWalt or higher quality power tools family/business, we turn to Craftsman for everyday hand tools we know will likely make it to the other side of a nuclear holocaust. Just about anyone can afford the basic tool "kit" from Craftsman, which makes it nice for the do-it-yourselfer; small investment and big return on the home projects.
Our crew has their own tool kits and belts full of Craftsmans tools, and the only complaints we ever hear is "hey, where did my *bleepbleep* philips head/hammer/tape measure go?"
It's easier to misplace a Craftsman tool than break it, apparently.
Very fine value from Craftsman and Sears.
