"WIGS ARE FOR OLD LADIES AND CANCER PATIENTS"
I ran crying from the room on many occasions after shouting those fateful words. You see, I had experienced a nightmare most women hope never happens to them. My hair had been ruined.
Back in the days of perms, when I did not learn that natural haircare is superior to anything chemical (along with great diet) I used to think to be acceptable, I had to have my tiny thin hair permed.
One hairstylist used to do my hair for me at a discount. She was good and I was appreciative because money was scarce in my home. One day I had finally saved enough to go to the salon in person and pay full price for a perm and some real expensive shampoo. I wanted to feel like everyone else.
Long story short- my beloved hairstylist became my nightmare that day. She would not listen to my words of warning that my head was burning- and she sat down to chat over coffee with an obnoxious woman who would NOT go away.
My hair was fried- completely FRIED. The worst part of it was that I was left with a huge spot several inches in diameter at the back of my head where the hair broke off to less than an inch long.
I was mortified. For over a year I would not go anywhere without crying. I would see myself in a mirror and sob endlessly. I went to other stylists who tried to help me, and I was left with no hope. My hair would grow several inches and then it would snap off leaving me with that huge bald spot.
My husband was so desperate to stop my crying that he would gently suggest I try to get a wig, and my outburst- well you already saw that.
One day I was at a conference feeling very discouraged and depressed. A gorgeous woman with blonde hair came up to me and started talking. I was so envious of her hair that I started crying. I told her I wished I had hair like hers.
Finally after I would not stop carrying on, she took me aside and told me that it was a wig. I would not believe her. Then she told me of a place called Beauty Trends where she got it and I kept it in mind.
WHAT ARE BEAUTY TRENDS WIGS LIKE?
One day I saw an ad in the paper for BEAUTY TRENDS and decided to get a catalog. I had tried a local wig company and the thing was horrible. It looked so fake.
Beauty Trends came and I ordered a blonde wig because I did not know what else to do- everything was in numbers and I could not make sense out of it.
When it came, I was delighted. I was told by some that it was awful, but I felt special in it and that is what mattered.
As the years went on, I managed to get on their mailing lists for clearance and I collected quite a stash of BEAUTY TRENDS WIGS.
Although BEAUTY TRENDS is a wig company, it is primarily made up of wigs from Revlon. Over the years many different brands have come and gone, but Adolfo, Beauty Trends, and Revlon stay pretty much the standard with new ones that come and go.
The quality is hit and miss, and they are made well, but sometimes some really bad wigs come through that have to be sent back.
HOW DOES THE COLOR SCALE WORK?
I would highly recommend that you order sample colors before you order a wig if you are not in a hurry. It is best to see what each color looks like before you buy. That is no guarantee either, because each dye lot varies too.
Plain colors have some variation within them so they are not totally flat looking. Tipped colors have one color roots and then the lighter color runs up through and the darker color hairs are shorter so it looks like the ends are dyed.
There are other colors that have chunky highlights, and some have four and five colors mixed- each one is different and unfortunately, hair swatches are not always accurate.
There are skin parts, tossled hair with no part, straight, long short, curly not curly, but one thing I want to STRESS. If you have to get a wig PLEASE do not get the page cut at the chin that most people get. It looks fake and as a wig expert (I use them constantly) I can honestly say that the LAST thing you want to do is have your hair scream- LOOK AT THE BAD WIG I AM WEARING.
HOW TO WEAR ONE OF BEAUTY TRENDS WIGS
Often it is recommended that you wear a cap under a wig. If that was a requirement I would never have done it. I hate caps- they strangle my head. I find the best way for me is to wash my hair, slick it down with Joico ICE gel and then french braid my hair. I then bobby pin the wig to my hair and it stays all day and night until bed.
HOW TO CARE FOR THEM
DO NOT WASH WIGS OFTEN. They do not get as dirty as our hair does and the more you wash the wigs the quicker they fade and wear out. Try to go as far as you can before washing the wigs again. And do NOT brush your wig. Just use your fingers to work out the snarls. Get a wig comb with the triangle pieces on it (revlon brand is the one most often seen) and they sell them at Beauty Trends.
Also you will want a wig stand to stand them on. I find the Beauty Trends haircare kit is okay but nothing remarkable.
HOW TO ORDER
I learned another thing from BEAUTY TRENDS- order as many wigs as you can from a card you don't use. Then you can compare them to each other and send back the ones you do not want. It will take a bit to get the credit again but it is worth it. One at a time is not at all helpful and is too hard to pick out hair.
BEAUTY TRENDS is a decent company, but they have their pitfalls. Sometimes you can get some REALLY bad wigs that come through. Sometimes the customer service reps are not very nice. For the most part, however, it is a decent company with great quality wigs and if you can get decent prices, then go for it. The worst wigs I ever got from them were wigs I paid full price for.
Each wig company has a personality of their wigs and I will say that Beauty Trends tends toward the more thick diameter hair fiber- not baby fine or fine, and more of it too. This could overwhelm some people who naturally have small features. In that case, THE WIG COMPANY or PAULA YOUNG would be good to check out as well. I will review them as soon as I get the chance.
You can find out more about BEAUTY TRENDS at
www.beautytrends.com
Wigs go from $15 - $200 each.
BY THE WAY
By me wearing wigs for one winter with hair gel under them on my hair, my hair follicles recovered completely making it unnecessary for me to wear wigs anymore. But the fun had already begun and I enjoyed them so much that I thanked that hair stylist for ruining my hair because it started one of the most freeing experiences in my life. What a great fashion accessory- I can wear clothing, colors and makeup that I could never wear before.
In the wintertime- it is fabulous- wigs ARE my hats and I don't have to worry about flat hair at all- it is wonderfully freeing.
