This book is about Jean-Dominique Bauby's recollections of his life before he suffered a stroke. He was the editor of French Elle when he suffered a stroke in 1995. He was in a coma for 20 days and when he awoke, he was completely paralyzed and was diagnosed with locked-in syndrome. His only means of communication was by blinking his left eye. He had the entire alphabet recited to him and blinked his eye when they reached the correct letter. This is how he was able to tell his story.
