I first discovered Too Faced's Tanning Bed in a Tube in a gift bag back at LA fashion week spring 07 for the fall collections. Since then, I have been addicted, swearing by it and using it religiously, and getting friends hooked in the process. It's smell is less than many self tanners, and the color is far better, with a light shimmer and gradual color that takes you from pale to perfect in less than a week- no weird orange-ness here. It's not super cheap, but a little goes a long way... try putting it on after a shower when your skin is still moist for a more even application. Good luck!
