I have always been too intimidated by the market to start investing in stocks. My friend who is a financial planner has told me that if you don't have several thousand ready to invest, going through a pro doesn't make a lot of sense. Sharebuilder allowed me to start investing monthly for the price of a pair of shoes. It's a great way to get in the game for a small investor looking to make long-term, dollar cost average buys. Can be pricey if you want to sell frequently, but I don't recommend it for that kind of investor.
